(Oldenburg) Originally an elective monarchy including also Scania (the southern part of present Sweden), and various Scandinavian territories; one of the earliest Kings, Knud I (Canute) ( d 1035) also ruled much of England. The throne did not become hereditary until the 12 th century and neither legitimacy nor primogeniture was necessarily required. King Knud IV (1163-1202) assumed title of King of the Slavs following the subjection of the Slavic tribes in Northern Germany 1184, this title changed to King of the Wends by King Waldemar IV ( d 1375), who also assumed the title of King of the Goths after the conquest of Gotland 1361. The male line of the ancient Kings expired with the death of Waldemar IV in 1375. His daughter, Margaret (1353-1412) m Haakon VI, King of Norway and Sweden ( d 1380); their son Oluf III ( d 1387) united all three Crowns. Waldemar's elder daughter, Ingeborg, m Duke Henry of Mecklenburg and had issue Mary (1363-1402?) who m Wartislav VII, Duke of Pomerania; their son Eric VII ( d 1459) became King of Norway 1389, of Denmark and Sweden 1396, and was crowned King of the Union 1397 (dethroned 1439). Denmark has no real World Cup tradition to speak of. It qualified for the first time in 1986 and made another appearance in '98. Nonetheless, it already has a strong reputation for being an entertaining team with players like Elkjaer Larsen and the Laudrup brothers, who dazzled the world with their skills. These stars may be gone, but the new crop of internationals will not let the country down. As the countdown to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan continues, CNNSI.com's Pedro Pinto will take a close look at all of the nations that will contend for football's greatest prize. Pinto is an anchor on World Sport, the international sports show that airs live on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN International.
Denmark normally operates on a 3-5-2 system with a strong back line, a hardworking midfield and a poisonous attack. There is plenty of talent at the back: AC Milan players Martin Laursen and Thomas Helveg are used to facing the world's top strikers week in and week out. Manager Morten Olsen likes to use two defensive midfielders to cover the holes that can be left in a three-man defense. Thomas Gravesen is a true "hard man," and veteran Jan Heintze can still run all day. As if they weren't good enough, there is Martin Jorgensen, who has turned into a star for Udinese. But the true talent of this side is up front. Ebbe Sand is deadly, and Jon Dahl Tomasson scores goals with ease.

    Denmark Vesey
    (c.1767-1822)
Carpenter, minister, revolutionary Vesey's example must be regarded as one of the most courageous ever to threaten the racist foundations of America. "Remember Denmark Vesey of Charleston!" was the battle cry of the first black regiment formed to fight in the Civil War. The war achieved what Vesey had so desperately striven for — the abolition of slavery. He had planned his own war of liberation in 1822, but his plans were revealed before the uprising could take place. For a number of reasons, Denmark Vesey has not been one of the well-remembered heroes in the fight to end U.S. slavery, up until recently. In the year 1999, three different books about Vesey were released by major publishers, showing the renewed interest in this nearly forgotten hero. Boyhood in the West Indies The date of Denmark Vesey's birth remains uncertain (it was probably around 1767), as does his past before 1781. He was either born in Africa or as a slave on St. Thomas, an island in the West Indies. The island became a center for the slave trade and for the growing of sugar and cotton. Over 4,000 black people and under 400 whites lived there in the late 1700s.

    Denmark - History

DENMARK Denmark lies between the North Sea and the Baltic, between northern Europe and the o ther Scandinavian nations, and (with more than 500 islands) between dry land and open sea. From this enviable seafaring position Denmark has forged a magnificent history and developed a remarkable culture. In the eleventh century, Viking ships carried the power of the Denmark monarchy to all of the coasts of medieval Europe. Today, visitors from all over the world come to Europe's oldest kingdom to explore the royal city of Copenhagen , to sample the glories of Denmark 's rich culture, and to meet its vibrant and friendly people. Vestiges of its royal past are readily apparent in Denmark 's stately castles, gardens, and manor houses. A fairytale atmosphere evoked by Copenhagens green towered skyline and the ever present memories of Hans Christian Andersen's magical tales.
Denmark's cities are filled with gracious plazas, statues, fountains, gardens and wide tree-lined walkways, open-air markets, flower vendors on street corners, museums, galleries, and little cafes offering strong coffee and delectable pastries.
As a matter of fact Denmark is one of the best-kept food secrets in all of Europe. Though specialties like Denmark pastries, open-faced sandwiches and fiery aquavits are known and appreciated internationally, they represent just the tip of Denmark gastronomy. Hundreds of restaurants and traditional inns around the country offer a variety of dishes, ranging from the authentic, hearty meals of Denmark 's maritime heritage to the inspired creations of a new generation of chefs.
