(circa) Saxo Grammaticus, in Gesta Danorum , says that the Danish King Frode raised a huge united army from many conquered lands and defeated a king of the Huns.
As Western Europe was threatened by the Huns (A.D. 406~436 - their most famous king was called Attila) and the Roman Empire wasn't capable of holding its position on the British islands any more, the Angles were (according to The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ) asked to come and participate in the war against the Picts. The Angles are believed to have lived somewhere in the area of Southern Jutland and the estuary of river Elbe, or maybe further north on Jutland.
The Jutes, the Saxons and more Angles participate in the war on Britain. Soon the Britons are fought by the new-comers.
The first Danish king known from contemporary sources is killed during a military attack against the Frankish Empire. Name: Huglik [or Chocillaicus in Gregor of Tours' annals].

Denmark in the middle ages
Geographical extent
A treaty of A.D. 811 sets the southern border of Denmark at the Ejder [Eider] river. The first mention of "Danmark" is made in the 880s. At this time, Denmark certainly included Skåne [Scania]; the islands of Fyn and Sjælland [Zealand] and ancillary lesser isles; Jylland [Jutland]; Viken Bohuslen and Halland seem to have also been considered part of Denmark. Blekinge, on the other hand, was Swedish in the 880s. Later, when the border between the kingdoms was fixed, around 1050, Blekinge, Skåne and Halland were part of Denmark.
At various intervals, parts of Denmark were sundered from the whole. From 1332 until 1360, Skåne and Blekinge were Swedish (as was Halland, in the latter part of the period). The duchy of Sønderjylland [South Jutland], later known as Slesvig [Schleswig], which existed from around 1130, became independent around 1300, as a principality in vassalage to the Danish king. From 1375, the counts of German Holsten [Holstein] held the fief, the original line (a sept of the Danish royalty) having died out. In 1460, however, the holder of the fief was the Danish king, who simultaneously became count of Holsten and

Jaegerkorpset Denmark's Jaegerkorpset is responsible for much of the Counter-Terrorist activities within Denmark. Jaegerkorpset is an elite Ranger Element within the Danish Army. The Danes are very careful about security, so little information about their Counter-Terrorist teams has been released. However, it is known that Jaegerkorpset operators deploy with the MP5 submachine gun ( primarily the suppressed versions ). Snipers are equiped with the reliable HK PSG-1 7.62 sniper rifle. The members of Jaegerkorpset are known to parachute from either CH-47 helicopters or C-130 cargo aircraft. On-target deliveries are performed by MD-500 helicopters. Jaegerkorpset operators are reputed to be able to supply near bulls-eyes on moving targets from these helicopters. Denmark Time and Date Denmark History Back to Top The Danes, a homogenous Gothic-Germanic people, have inhabited Denmark since prehistoric times. Danish is the principal language. English is a required school subject, and fluency is high. A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level. Although religious freedom is guaranteed, the state-supported Evangelical Lutheran Church accounts for about 84% (down from 92% in 1984) of those persons claiming religious affiliation. Several other Christian denominations, as well as other major religions, find adherents in Denmark. Islam is now the second-largest religion in Denmark. During the Viking period (9th-11th centuries), Denmark was a great power based on the Jutland Peninsula, the Island of Zealand, and the southern part of what is now Sweden. In the early 11th century, King Canute united Denmark and England for almost 30 years. Viking raids brought Denmark into contact with Christianity, and in the 12th century, crown and church influence increased. By the late 13th century, royal power had waned, and the nobility forced the king to grant a charter, considered Denmark's first constitution. Although the struggle between crown and nobility continued into the 14th century, Queen Margrethe I succeeded in uniting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland under the Danish crown. Sweden and Finland left the union in 1520; however, Norway remained until 1814. Iceland, in a "personal union" under the king of Denmark after 1918, became independent in 1944.

History: The Roman Empire had little contact with people as far north as Denmark. Consequently, the written record from that time is patchy and unreliable. The northward movement of the Franks in the eighth and ninth centuries forced the local rulers to resist external aggression and led to the rise of Denmark as a significant power in the region. A successful series of raids on England in the 11th century led to the creation of an Anglo-Danish kingdom. Among its rulers was Canute (Knud), later famous for his confrontation with the sea. Denmark’s power reached its zenith in the early 13th century, by which time Canute’s successors had taken control of Scandinavia, parts of modern-day Germany (Holstein, Pomerania and Mecklenburg) and Estonia. This empire rapidly disintegrated over the next 50 years, although Denmark, Norway and Sweden were reunited in the 14th century through blood ties between the various ruling families. The Kalmar Union, as it was known (named after a town in southern Sweden) was considered a vital component of Danish strategy, as it guaranteed control of the Baltic. However, the rise of Sweden as a power in its own right, during the mid and late 15th century, forced Denmark to take a more aggressive posture. (Norway was still firmly allied to the Danes.) This enjoyed most success under King Christian IV, considered to be the greatest of Danish monarchs, who ruled between 1588 and 1648 and did much to establish the country as a modern nation and an influential European state. In truth, its relative power was waning, undermined from within by a backward semi-feudal economy and constant friction between the monarchy and the nobility – and from without by the rise of other powers, notably England and France.

Copenhagen Guide Home History of Copenhagen By Philip Blazdell After Canute's death, Denmark fell into a period of turmoil and civil war. Later, Waldemar (1157-82) and Waldemar II (1202-41) were energetic rulers who established Danish hegemony over Northern Europe. With the end of the Viking raids and the development of a strong and independent church, the nobles were able to impose their will on the weaker kings. In 1282, Eric V (1259-86) was forced to submit to the Great Charter, which established annual parliaments and a council of nobles who shared the king's power. This form of government persisted until 1660. Wadlermar III (1340-75) again brought Danish power to a high point, but he was humiliated by the Hanseatic League in the Treaty of Stralsund (1370). Waldemar's daughter, Queen Margaret, achieved (1397) the union of the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish crowns. Sweden soon escaped effective Danish rule, and with the accession (1523) of Gustavus I of Sweden the union was dissolved. However, the union with Norway lasted until 1814.

History of the Country Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AC. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, (Danish mums had a few problems naming their children), who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark. By the late 14th century, upstart dynasties intermarried, eventually forming the Kalmar Union under fair Queen Margrethe; Denmark, Norway and Sweden, now all bunked in together, started to exasperate each other. Sweden was particularly peeved by profligate Danish spending on wars, and the union dissolved in 1523 when Sweden elected Gustav Vasa as its king. Norway, however, was to remain under Danish rule for another three centuries.
