Denmark
Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian nations other than Iceland. Located between the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea on the southeast, Denmark is separated from Norway by the Skagerrak and from Sweden by the Kattegat and the Oresund. In the south, it shares a 68 km (43 mi) border with Germany. The Faeroe Islands and Greenland have been part of Denmark since the 14th century and are now self-governing units within the nation. During the 9th century the name Denmark (Danmark: "border district of the Danes") was used for the first time. Subsequently, Denmark ruled over much of Scandinavia, which developed a common Nordic culture. At the same time, because of Denmark's proximity to Germany, Denmark has also been influenced by German culture. Today, Denmark's balanced

History
Nomadic hunters followed the lichen and moss-eating reindeer into post-glacial Denmark. The reindeer heard 'go north' voices, but the Stone Age hunters stayed put, sowing seeds in the ash of slash-and-burn fields, fencing in stock animals and burying their dead vertically. Skill and artistry flowered in the Bronze Age from 1800 BC, trade routes paddled all the way south and the most beautiful and valuable objects were buried in bogs as sacrificial offerings. Iron clanged in from 500 BC and was domestically available, leading to the development of large agricultural communities. Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons, got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.

    Denmark History
Judging from artifacts found in the area, Denmark has been settled since the end of the last Ice Age, some 15,000 years ago. The country's most famous residents, the Vikings, roamed the seas in the early Middle Ages, conquering a vast empire and transforming Europe. Even after the Viking era had passed, the Danish crown exercised regional power, briefly controlling Sweden, and long governing Norway. However, the Danish kingdom lost much of its territory in a series of conflicts with Sweden in the 16th and 17th centuries, and both its fleet and Norway in the Napoleonic Wars. As a final blow, Prussia overran the primarily German-speaking Schleswig-Holstein (a region just south of present-day Denmark) in the 1860s. The U.S. purchased its share of the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917, and Iceland gained its independence in 1944. That leaves Greenland and the Faroe Islands - both now autonomous - as the country's only vestiges of overseas influence. Denmark Trip Search See Trips to Denmark Denmark Travel Experts

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... DENMARK Denmark controlled an enormous swath of land in the 1000s: Iceland, Greenland, Britain, Norway, and more. Several hundred years later, Britain was out of Denmark's orbit but Sweden and Finland had been acquired. But through the succeeding centuries, Finland, Sweden, and Norway all took different paths Finland and Sweden to independence and Norway to the control of Sweden. Other possessions went to Prussia (Schleswig-Holstein) and even the United States (Virgin Islands, sold in 1914). Iceland became independent, too, in 1944. Before World War II, Denmark signed a nonaggression agreement with Germany which was broken months later when the Nazis invaded Denmark. Despite this occupation, the Danes managed to save over 7,000 Jews by sending them to safe haven in Sweden. Post-war, Denmark has enjoyed peace and fluctuating economic fortunes. As in many of the Scandinavian countries, Denmark's comprehensive social welfare policies requires high taxes and even Denmark's generally impressive economic growth faltered in the 1970s. But, along with the rest of the world, Denmark's economy improved in the 1980s.

From its humble beginnings as a medieval fishing village and trade cent re , Copenhagen became the capital city of Denmark and one of Europe's most sophisticated cities. Copenhagen was named Europe's cultural capital for 1996. Throughout the year, Copenhagen sponsored a series of plays, art shows, concerts, and architectural displays that showcased its tradition of culture and art in day-to-day life. In the following article from the 1997 Collier's Year Book, American journalist Anita Peltonen described some of Copenhagen's best-known sites, from its cobbled streets and historical buildings to the graceful statue of the Little Mermaid, inspired by a fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level. The Evangelical Lutheran Church is state supported and accounts for about 97% of Denmark's religious affiliation. Denmark has religious freedom however and several other Protestant denominations and other religions exist. During the Viking period (9th-11th centuries) Denmark was a great power based on the Jutland Peninsula the Island of Zealand and the southern part of what is now Sweden. In the early 11th century King Canute united Denmark and England for almost 30 years. Viking raids brought Denmark into contact with Christianity and in the 12th century crown and church influence increased. By the late 13th century royal power had waned and the nobility forced the king to grant a charter considered Denmark's first constitution. Although the struggle between crown and nobility continued into the 14th century Queen Margrethe I succeeded in uniting Denmark Norway Sweden Finland the Faroe Islands Iceland and Greenland under the Danish crown. Sweden and Finland left the union in 1520; however Norway remained until 1814. Iceland in a "personal union" under the king of Denmark after 1918 became independent in 1944.
