Print version Geography of Sweden Despite its small population and large area, Sweden is a technologically advanced country with good infrastructure, including an efficient transportation and communications system. Geographically speaking, it is characterized by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes. Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. It extends from north to south at roughly the same latitude as Alaska or – in the Southern Hemisphere – the stretch of ocean between Cape Horn in South America and the Antarctic continent. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Ecuador or New Jersey. A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country has changed over the centuries: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish-Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century-old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war since 1814.

Records At The Family History Library

The Family History Library Catalog
... HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY You may find that the name of the place your ancestor came from has changed or that the county or even the country has changed. This section describes the changes that have taken place in Denmark. This information will help you find records in the Family History Library Catalog for the place your ancestors lived. You may also need to learn about changes in Denmark's borders. This section describes the jurisdictions used in the Family History Library Catalog. Before 1793, Denmark was divided into about 50 small counties. These county names appear on the 1787 census and on pre-1793 probate records. In 1793, Denmark consolidated the counties into new, larger counties. The Family History Library Catalog uses the county structure that existed between 1793 and 1970. The county structure changed again in 1970. See the “Maps,” “Gazetteers,” and “History” sections of this outline. The southern boundary of Denmark changed in 1864. Denmark's territory formerly included the state of Schleswig. After the Danish-Prussian War of 1863, Denmark ceded its four southern counties of Tønder, Haderslev, Sønderborg, and Åbenrå to Germany. These Danish areas remained under German control until after World War I (1920), when they were returned to Denmark. Because of this, administrative districts were reorganized, their names and boundaries changed, and local place-names changed.

    96. Traditional Zones Of Transport Geography In Relation To Vessel Types
The itinerary of king Valdemar may therefore represent another main zone of transport geography in the Baltic of the 10th14th century The pivot of denmark.
    http://www.abc.se/~m10354/publ/transport.htm
Beowulf's Ship Type and the Pivot of Denmark
Traditional zones of transport geography in relation to vessel types
by Christer Westerdahl This article introduces a new fundamental concept, that of transport zones, along with its relationship to ship types at reloading. Ships are considered to be mere a product of adaptation to the environment (the natural character of harbours, routes, winds in the routes) and to cargoes than just a product of repetitive boat building traditions. Other related concepts, such as transit points or pivots on the borders between zones are illustrated. The Nordic/Scando-Baltic and Northern Russian area is the starting point, while the work of Fernand Braudel illustrates the zones of the Mediterranean. In stanza 1686 of the Anglo-Saxon epic of Beowulf appears a little-known and commented fragment of maritime reality. A golden sword hilt goes to the best of earthly kings, king Hroðgar of the Danes:
      þæm selestan be sæm tweonum,
þara the on Sceden-igge sceattas dælde.

    Introduction
Once the seat of Viking raiders and later a major north European power, Denmark has evolved into a modern, prosperous nation that is participating in the political and economic integration of Europe. So far, however, the country has opted out of some aspects of the European Union's Maastricht Treaty, including the new joint monetary system.

Only 3% of the land is fertile, the coastline is deeply cut by fjords and mountains, some covered with large glaciers cover more than half the land mass. It is very long and narrow (500 km lies north of the Arctic Circle) and shares borders with Finland, Sweden and Russia. Norway's west coast is scattered with small islands.
