No matter where you travel, a short detour will put you on the trail of the Vikings. Denmark's countryside abounds with evidence of the Viking Age: their ships, their settlements, and their treasures. And they live on in authentic Viking festivals around the country, usually during summer. The country is also home to a large number of strikingly preserved archaeological sites and authentic reconstructions of Viking ships. Viking museums vividly chronicle the Viking life and times during the glory days from around 750-1050 AD. Denmark is the oldest kingdom in the world. The current monarch is queen Margrethe II, who had her Silver Jubilee on January 14, 1997. She boasts the oldest lineage in Europe, dating from early 900 AD and Viking King Gorm. The Queen is very popular among Danes and visitors alike, and during major royal festivals thousands of people gather in the square in front of Amalienborg Castle to wave flags and cheer for the Queen and her family. More than 200 castles and stately homes grace the Danish countryside a surprising number, given Denmark's small size. Many of these are open to the public. One of the most famous castles is Kronborg Castle, in Elsinore north of Copenhagen, where Shakespeare's Hamlet is said to have lived.

    Encyclopedia Definition: Culture of Denmark
The Culture of Denmark is inherently hard to define. None the less, there are some general characteristics often associated with Danish society and every day culture . Danes are generally a reserved people, though they are often considered positively outgoing compared to their more distant northern cousins in Norway and Sweden . Danes are fun loving, as a trip through any town on a Friday night can attest, but hard working when there's something to be done. They are noted for their very 'civilized' nature. They are generally compassionate, articulate, and clean. Consequently, there is also a sense of arrogance and smugness sometimes associated with the Danes. Equality is an important part of Danish culture, so much so that, 'success' or what may be seen as a deliberate attempt to distinguish oneself from others may be viewed with hostility. This characteristic is called Janteloven or Jante's Law by Danes.

Falun Gong practitioners were originally invited to present their art performances, which have won the Community First Prize at the Cavalcade of the Edinburgh International Festival 2002. However, the Chinese Embassy threatened pulling out all Chinese community performances unless Falun Gong practitioners were excluded from Asian Comments. According to the event organiser, the Danish government officials bowed to the pressure. Mr Roger Helmer MEP was very concerned with the exclusion of Falun Gong practitioners from the show under Jiang regime pressure and written to the Danish Culture Minister to raise the issue.
His letter is as follows: Mr Brian Nikkelsen
    Minister for Culture
    Copenhagen
Denmark September 16, 2002 Dear Mr Nikkelsen, Falun Gong, EU-Asia Conference I have recently met with a constituent of mine, [name omitted], and other representatives from the Falun Gong Movement. I believe Falun Gong to be a peaceful organisation, which should be allowed to practice its philosophical system in a democratic society. I would be grateful if you could look into this matter for me and comment on the policy of the Danish Government on the issue of freedom of religion. In particular, has the Danish Government changed its position as a result of pressure from the Chinese Government?
