The Danes prioritise their spare time highly, and many are active outside of work practising sports, attending evening classes, participating in cultural activities such as visiting museums and going to the theatre or taking part in associations and clubs.
The Danish cultural life is varied, offering live music, ballet, theatre and opera. The Royal Danish Ballet, the opera houses in Jutlandand Copenhagenand the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra are examples of internationally acclaimed institutions. Denmark is, furthermore, the country of music festivals, which means the selection of music in the summer half is comprehensive and international, especially in the genres of rock, folk and jazz.
Other leisure activities range from all types of sport and exercise to clubs, associations, organisation and evening classes. All local authorities arrange activities specifically for children.

Denmark - History

DENMARK Denmark lies between the North Sea and the Baltic, between northern Europe and the o ther Scandinavian nations, and (with more than 500 islands) between dry land and open sea. From this enviable seafaring position Denmark has forged a magnificent history and developed a remarkable culture. In the eleventh century, Viking ships carried the power of the Denmark monarchy to all of the coasts of medieval Europe. Today, visitors from all over the world come to Europe's oldest kingdom to explore the royal city of Copenhagen , to sample the glories of Denmark 's rich culture, and to meet its vibrant and friendly people. Vestiges of its royal past are readily apparent in Denmark 's stately castles, gardens, and manor houses. A fairytale atmosphere evoked by Copenhagens green towered skyline and the ever present memories of Hans Christian Andersen's magical tales.
Denmark's cities are filled with gracious plazas, statues, fountains, gardens and wide tree-lined walkways, open-air markets, flower vendors on street corners, museums, galleries, and little cafes offering strong coffee and delectable pastries.
As a matter of fact Denmark is one of the best-kept food secrets in all of Europe. Though specialties like Denmark pastries, open-faced sandwiches and fiery aquavits are known and appreciated internationally, they represent just the tip of Denmark gastronomy. Hundreds of restaurants and traditional inns around the country offer a variety of dishes, ranging from the authentic, hearty meals of Denmark 's maritime heritage to the inspired creations of a new generation of chefs.

Denmark History and Culture
History Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.

Dictionary Definition of Culture of Denmark

The Culture of Denmark is inherently hard to define. None the less, there are some general characteristics often associated with Danish society and every day culture . Danes are generally a reserved people, though they are often considered positively outgoing compared to their more distant northern cousins in Norway and Sweden . Danes are fun loving, as a trip through any town on a Friday night can attest, but hard working when there's something to be done. They are noted for their very 'civilized' nature. They are generally compassionate, articulate, and clean. Consequently, there is also a sense of arrogance and smugness sometimes associated with the Danes. Equality is an important part of Danish culture, so much so that, 'success' or what may be seen as a deliberate attempt to distinguish oneself from others may be viewed with hostility. This characteristic is called Janteloven or Jante's Law by Danes. Cultural Achievements
