Culture
The Danish language belongs to the northern branch of the Germanic language group, and bears a strong resemblance to other Scandinavian tongues. Famed Danish writers include Hans Christian Andersen, whose fairy tales have been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible; the theologian and philosopher S¸ren Kierkegaard, a forerunner of modern existentialism; and Karen Blixen, who penned Out of Africa and Babette's Feast . Peter H¸eg, of Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow fame, is Denmark's most prominent contemporary author. Internationally, the best known Danish film director is Carl Dreyer (1889-1968). Dreyer directed numerous films, including the 1928 masterpiece La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc , which was acclaimed for its rich visual textures and innovative use of close-up. Of late, Danish cinema has attracted attention with the wonderful Babette's Feast , and with the adaptation of Danish author, Martin Andersen Nex¸'s book Pelle the Conqueror , by director Bille August. The leading director of the new millenium is Lars von Trier, whose films

Denmark History
Judging from artifacts found in the area, Denmark has been settled since the end of the last Ice Age, some 15,000 years ago. The country's most famous residents, the Vikings, roamed the seas in the early Middle Ages, conquering a vast empire and transforming Europe. Even after the Viking era had passed, the Danish crown exercised regional power, briefly controlling Sweden, and long governing Norway. However, the Danish kingdom lost much of its territory in a series of conflicts with Sweden in the 16th and 17th centuries, and both its fleet and Norway in the Napoleonic Wars. As a final blow, Prussia overran the primarily German-speaking Schleswig-Holstein (a region just south of present-day Denmark) in the 1860s. The U.S. purchased its share of the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917, and Iceland gained its independence in 1944. That leaves Greenland and the Faroe Islands - both now autonomous - as the country's only vestiges of overseas influence.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Aarhus - Culture Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark with approx. 265.000 inhabitants, situated on the Eastern coast of the Jutland peninsula. By air, the City is connected to Copenhagen (the Capital of Denmark), London, Stockholm (Sweden), Stavanger (Norway) and Oslo (Norway). The history of Aarhus goes back more than a thousand years and people have lived in Aarhus ever since the Vikings settled here, where the river flows out into the bay. Actors Portray Vikings on horseback during the Viking Fes ti val at Aarhus. Aarhus has an outstanding location. The Vikings who chose Aarhus for their settlement and their home port certainly made a good choice. Lined with woods and by beaches the city lies in its shielded spot inviting you to enjoy its many attractions. Best known and treasured is probably the open-air museum "the Old Town'' with more than 60 half-timbered houses, all carefully removed from their original sites throughout the country and now restored here in Aarhus with loving care. In the forest south of Aarhus, you will find another 3-star attraction, the Prehistoric Museum of Moesgaard. It contains the ethnographical and archaeological collections from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, and the Viking Age.

http://www.eurotravelling.net/denmark/copenhagen/copenhagen_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Copenhagen - Culture Danish Flag Copenhagen is a city with much to offer. So much, in fact, that it would be difficult to cover it all in just one visit. The sights of Copenhagen rival those of other large European cities, but the pace here is much more relaxed. The Danish people are fairly laid-back and to get a real feel for life here you should take it easy. Don't rush things and don't try to see all the sights in a weekend. I suggest that you pick a couple of things that really interest you and leave the rest for another time. If for no other reason, it will give you an excuse to return to this beautiful city.
Museums
Copenhagen is home to museums of many different types. There are cultural, historical, and natural museums as well as museums of art and design. If you plan to visit many of these museums you may want to purchase a Copenhagen Card. This is a ticket for unlimited rail travel in and around Copenhagen and includes admission to many museums. It is available at rail stations, tourist offices and travel agencies. For a complete list and description of Copenhagen museums see Copenhagen Now or Denmark Today. Denmark Today also lists all the museums that take part in the Copenhagen Card deal. One more tip- The National Museum, which normally costs Dkr 30, is free on Wednesdays.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Culture of Denmark is inherently hard to define. None the less, there are some general characteristics often associated with Danish society and every day culture . Danes are generally a reserved people, though they are often considered positively outgoing compared to their more distant northern cousins in Norway and Sweden . Danes are fun loving, as a trip through any town on a Friday night can attest, but hard working when there's something to be done. They are noted for their very 'civilized' nature. They are generally compassionate, articulate, and clean. Consequently, there is also a sense of arrogance and smugness sometimes associated with the Danes. Equality is an important part of Danish culture, so much so that, 'success' or what may be seen as a deliberate attempt to distinguish oneself from others may be viewed with hostility. This characteristic is called Janteloven or Jante's Law by Danes.

The word culture comes from the Latin root colere, (to inhabit, to cultivate, or to honor). In general it refers to human activity; different definitions of culture reflect different theories for understanding, or criteria for valuing, human activity. The Kingdom of Norway is a Nordic country west of Sweden on the Scandinavian Peninsula. It has a very elongated form and has an extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean, where Norway's famous fjords are found. In addition to Sweden, it borders Russia and Finland. The nearby island territories of Svalbard and Jan Mayen are under Norwegian sovereignty and are considered by Norway as part of the kingdom, while Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean and Peter I Island in the South Pacific Ocean are Norwegian dependencies and not considered part of the kingdom. Additionally, Norway has a claim for Dronning Maud Land in Antarctica.

This book is a dream come true for the serious traveler to Denmark who really wants to know about the Danish people, not just their historic sites, architecture and museums. This is not a travel guide, but it is a map of the heart and soul of the people who inhabit the country. Strange teases out all the uniquenesses and eccentricities of his fellow countrymen, and, because he has lived and worked outside of Denmark, is able to compare the Danish culture with others, notably American and British culture. The book is chock full of facts and statistics about Denmark, and, though it is written ostensibly for people who are moving to the country, I found it excellent preparation for my upcoming two-week vacation in Denmark. I feel that I have a headstart now in entering into conversations with people and interpreting their actions and reactions. Even the parts that are specific to those who will live in Denmark are interesting, as they give insight to the way Danes live their everyday life.

    A Critical Epoch for Denmark
    A West Jutland Family
These merchants from west Jutland were thrifty and pious. In the Moravian Brethren congregation in Copenhagen they found again the strict idea of sin they knew from their homeland - as well as the corresponding fervent hope of grace. Michael Kierkegaard had made a lot of money when, as early as February 1797, during an illness, he had made over his flourishing business to others. The illness was overcome, and for forty years Kierkegaard lived as a wealthy rentier continuously followed by economic good fortune; in the State bankruptcy of 1813 he escaped any serious losses. In this way was preserved the fortune that was to bring Søren Kierkegaard a way of life independent of money.

the way for the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle; like Hegel he attacked German Romantic irony, whose morally dissolute effects he had recently felt in his own soul and body. Thus The Concept of Irony is the expression of ideals that were to inspirit Part Two of the coming major work, EitherOr* 1 (1843).
