Urban Forestry: Dendrology: Tree Identification Links A Key to Common Trees of Alabama http://www.pfmt.org/dendrology/key.htm
This key can help you easily identify any of the 66 most common trees found in Alabama. Keys such as this one, which is based on a series of choices between two statements, are called dichotomous keys. This key was designed for use during the growing season. Leaf and bark characteristics are the primary features used for identifying trees. Margy Fischer, Corner Post staff ( reporter@cafnrcornerpost.com Oct. 28, 2002 - MU Forestry Club members took their annual trip to the Midwestern Foresters' Conclave Oct. 11 and 12. The event was held at Michigan Tech in Alberta, Mich. The conclave competition included timber sports on the collegiate level.
"A bunch of foresters get together and do old time forestry stuff," conclave participant Jon Motsinger said. "It's kind of like back to the stuff they used to do, but its more fun and more relaxed." The club had three participants in all events, which included log rolling, speed chopping, sawing, pulp tossing, chain throwing and tobacco spitting. Academic events included dendrology (the identification of trees); wood identification (identifying lumber); and compass and traverse. While Forestry Club members were in Michigan for the conclave, they saw both rain and snow.

The Urban Forestry Manual is being developed by the USDA Forest Service, Southern Region and Southern Research Station, and the Southern Group of State Foresters as an educational tool. This manual provides basic information for State forestry agency employees and others who work with communities on urban forestry. It can be used for self-guided learning, finding specific information on a topic and developing workshops and presentations. There are 16 units (chapters) in the Manual - at this time 10 units are on this web site. The other units will be added as they become available. Table of Contents Using this Manual

Taxonomy of Trees
... Unit Table of Contents Overview Many different aspects of urban forestry depend on your knowledge of dendrology. Some examples include tree health problems, species selection, hazard-tree identification, tree inventories, and urban wildlife habitat identification. Your knowledge of dendrology and skill in identifying trees can help you communicate this information and make recommendations to the community. This unit first defines dendrology and reviews types of trees in the south. The second section is about taxonomy of trees, which includes classification, naming trees, and tree identification. This information provides a foundation for the final section, which describes how the urban environment influences tree identification. Can You Tell the Difference?

Pine River Middle School Who We Are Lesson and Projects Resources ... News Around the Middle Tree Identification Project Author D. Holmes Objective Students: You will need to become familiar with the following web sites and how they operate. You need to think of a tree (or make one up) and how the leaves are patterned and how they look. You then will need to work your way through the dichotomous key to identify the tree’s name. Later in the week we will tour the school’s property, collect data, and return to the computer lab and identify the trees that we found. Activities 1. This week our life science class will be doing a project on tree identification. We will be using the computer lab as part of this unit. The class may also be working with your math class to combine math measuring skills along with the identifying work we will be doing. 2. You are required to find at least three different kinds of trees. 3. You will need to find the required information needed to identify the tree without removing any parts off the tree. 4. You will have to write the information down and bring it back to school with you on the following day. This gathered data will be part of your assignment.

Field plant identification is a challenge faced every day in the tropics. Many professionals involved in biology studies would like to master an easy method to know, in the field, the scientific names of the plants they are dealing with. Some times people would be very pleased even just by knowing the genus or the family, or just the order of the plants. A method solving these types of problems is offered every year by the Tropical Science Center, in Costa Rica, offering a two-week course of Tropical Dendrology, which is given twice in English (March, and June-July) and one time in Spanish (April). go to top TSC: The hosting institution The Tropical Science Center (TSC) was founded in 1962 as a private Costarrican non profit association. Its objectives are to conduct and support scientific research and education, and to encourage the acquisition and application of knowledge concerning Man's enduring relationships with the resources - biological and physical - of tropical environments. The Center established its Continuing Education Program in 1992. The Center also offers private consultancy in these and other subjects. There is a link at the bottom to a webpage on the Tropical Science Center.
