The Maryland Envirothon Forestry 2003 Resource Site Tree Identification This is an online study guide for advisors and students participating in the Maryland State Envirothon competition . It is not inclusive of all content you may need to know for the state competition. Web sites provided are for reference only and may not be exactly what students are tested on. Introduction: Because Maryland has five distinct physiographic provinces from the Coastal Plain to the Allegheny Plateau, our state features a great diversity of tree species, which makes the tree identification station of the Envirothon a challenge! During the competition, your team must identify 10 or 15 species of trees by their correct common name. Professional foresters have completed college courses in dendrology , or the science of tree identification, and have to identify literally hundreds of species of trees and shrubs by both their common and scientific names. When identifying trees, nearly all of your senses may be utilized (except hearing!), to examine the entire tree. Here are several characteristics to look for when identifying tree species:
  • Leaf shape – Are they simple or compound? Are the margins (edges) of the leaf smooth or toothed? Are the undersides of the leaves fuzzy? If the tree has needles, how many of them are in a bundle? Are the leaves scales like?

This key can help you easily identify any of the 66 most common trees found in Alabama. Keys such as this one, which is based on a series of choices between two statements, are called dichotomous keys. This key was designed for use during the growing season. Leaf and bark characteristics are the primary features used for identifying trees. Please join us in welcoming Tim Baker to the Forestry and Natural Resources Department as our new full-time instructor and department head! Tim comes to us from Penn State University's Wildlife Technology Program, where he worked as Assistant Professor of Forestry in the College of Agriculture and served as the DuBois campus representative for the College of Agriculture at Penn State University.
Tim has a B.S. in Forest Resources and an M.S. in Forest Biology from the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from North Carolina State University. He worked for the USDA Forest Service in Klamath-Trinity National Forest here in California and in Colorado and Montana, and conducted a research fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Baker's research projects have included air pollution effects on tree physiology, fire effects on forest regeneration, resource competition among boreal forest species, and the impacts of deer browsing on forest vegetation.
Courses Tim will teach this semester include Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resources, Silviculture (applied forest ecology), and Introduction to Surveying. Tim has also taught Dendrology (tree identification) and special topics such as animal tracking, forest fire fighting, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and chainsaw safety.
