KHAMENEH’I ATTACKS IRANIAN LIBERAL DEMOCRATS AND POLITICAL PARTIES TEHRAN 4 Nov. (IPS) Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’I, the leader of the Islamic Republic labelled as "traitors" the former revolutionary students turned reformists and accused them of adhering to the Western corrupt social democracy. This was the harshest attack launched by the egocentric Khameneh’i against some reformists who urged the embattled President Mohammad Khatami to use the 11 September terrorist attack on the United States to improve relations with Washington. "Unfortunately, the problem with some of our officials is their weak and torpid faith and Islamic thoughts and their attraction to Western political prescriptions", he told students "invited" to meet him in the central city of Esfahan. Mr. Khamene’hi’s new warnings was a follow up to his efforts to cut short any attempts by some reformists, mainly MMs (members of the Majles) to end Iran’s isolation and strengthens the position of the country in the light of the conditions created as a result of the 11 September operations. On his instructions, the Iranian Judiciary, which is led by the Iraqi-born Ayatollah Mahmood Hashemi-Shahroodi banned all officials to speak out in public in support of establishing contacts and talking directly with America, using the old "Great Satan" to designate the United States.

REAGAN AND THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT: Cal Thomas remembers how he ignored them. - 2:34:52 PM THE ITALIANS ARE RESCUED: A great event in Iraq. Kinda like this one . You can barely find them in the papers. If hostages had been captured, or Zarqawi had killed again, it might be another story. CREEPING SECTARIANISM: The attempt by Karl Rove to turn organized fundamentalist Protestantism into a wing of the Republican Party continues apace. It is as insulting to religious faith as it is counter-productive. ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY: June 7 was the fiftieth anniversary of the suicide of Alan Turing, one of the forefathers of modern computing who was also critical in cracking the Nazi Enigma Code that helped win the war against Hitler. For these achievements, he was persecuted , given estrogen injections and threatened with jail because he was homosexual. Just another gay man fighting for his country only to be treated with contempt and cruelty - like so many American servicemembers today.

A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat
By Sen. Zell Miller
First of three parts:

Once upon a time, the most successful Democratic leader of them all, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, looked south and said, "I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished."
Today our national Democratic leaders look south and say, "I see one-third of a nation and it can go to hell."
Too harsh? I don't think so. Consider these facts.
In 1960, the state of Georgia gave Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kennedy a higher percentage of its vote than did JFK's home state of Massachusetts. "You can look it up," as Casey Stengel used to say. Only the percentage in Rhode Island was greater. And Georgians were not disappointed in Kennedy's performance as president. He stared down the Russians over Cuba and cut taxes in a significant way that stimulated the economy. Had he not been assassinated, he could have carried Georgia a second time.

DEMOCRATS ROUTINELY COMPLAIN that President Bush and his political team call them unpatriotic for criticizing Bush on the war in Iraq. Democratic senator John Kerry, a struggling presidential candidate, last week went one step further. Addressing the Council on Foreign Relations, Kerry claimed to know ahead of time how the Bush crowd would react to his speech. "I know what the Bush apologists will say to thisthat it is unpatriotic to question, to criticize, and to call for change," Kerry said. "I believe it is the essence of patriotism to hold this nation to a higher standard." Yet there was no such charge from Bush or his alliesno doubt, to Kerry's consternation. The claim that Democrats are targets of a political low blow by being labeled unpatriotic has become a Democratic refrain. It's been used by Senate minority leader Tom Daschle, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, Sen. Bob Graham of Florida, and presidential candidates Dick Gephardt, Wesley Clark, and Howard Dean. Kennedy was upbraided by Republicans in September for claiming Bush had concocted the Iraq war for political gain. His response: "There's no question that this White House sees political advantage in the war. And you can see it in the way they attack the patriotism of those who question them."

Why Christian Americans

the Democratic Party Thank God for Liberal Democrats ! Page People sometimes ask which political party Jesus would belong to, if he were a U.S. citizen. That's a purely hypothetical, and perhaps pointless question to ask, because Jesus is so unique. The more pertinent question for those who believe in Jesus is which political party would he want his followers in America to join and support.
When the "Grand Old Party" came into existence in President Lincoln's day, can you imagine that Jesus would not have wanted his true followers to be Republicans, and to participate energetically in its heroic campaign to eradicate the scourge of slavery from America?
Teddy Roosevelt was another great Republican President whom Jesus might well have recognized as a man after his own heart. Not only did he fight to preserve vast areas of the country from those who were bent on exploiting and destroying God's creation for their own selfish gain, but he also fought on behalf of oppressed working people for many of the causes that would later be embraced by the Democratic Party under his cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, after his own Republican Party, because of its identification with the rich and the powerful. rejected those reform causes.
Over the decades, both major parties have had their share of men and women of high moral character on the one hand, and of very low moral character on the other, and they still do. In the 20th century, however, a very consistent pattern emerged at the national level in America. Whenever weaker members of our society or in the world at large were being bullied by more powerful groups, if either party went to the aid of the oppressed, it was the "Liberal" party, while the "Conservative" party could be counted on to do all in its power to preserve (or "conserve") the power and privileges of the whites over "coloreds", of the well-to-do over the poor, of men over women, of straights over gays, of those long immigrated over those trying to get into America now, and on and on. Reinventing Democrats
The Politics of Liberalism from Reagan to Clinton
Kenneth S. Baer
February 2000
376 pages, 18 photographs, 6 x 9
Cloth ISBN 0-7006-1009-X, $29.95 (t) When Bill Clinton declared in 1996 that "the era of big government is over," Republicans felt that he was stealing their thunder. But in fact, it was the culmination of a decade-long struggle for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. This book tells how a group of New Democrats reformed their enfeebled party's agenda, moved it toward the center, and recaptured the White House with their first two-term president since FDR. Reinventing Democrats is the story of the Democratic Leadership Council, an elite group of elected officials, benefactors, and strategists that set out to change the public philosophy of their party. Kenneth Baer tells who they are, where they came from, what they believe in, and how they helped elect Bill Clintonthe DLC's former chairmanto the presidency. Drawing on DLC archives and interviews with party insiders, Baer chronicles the increasing influence of the DLC from 1985 to the present. He describes battles waged between New Democrats and party liberals after the failed candidacy of Walter Mondale, and he takes readers behind the scenes in Little Rock to tell how DLC director Al From encouraged Clinton's run for the White House. He then explains how the DLC reshaped the party's agenda into a "third way" that embraced positions such as welfare reform, a balanced budget, free trade, a tough stance on crime, and a strong national defense.

    Partisanship over ideology by kos
    Tue May 11th, 2004 at 12:12:38 EDT
Next Thursday I will be a featured speaker at the New Democrat Network's annual conference . While ideology isn't a major tenet of NDN's activities these days, NDN is still a "centrist" Dem organization. So does that make me a centrist Democrat? I don't know. I'm pro-free trade (but with the "fair trade" twist). I'm anti-war except when war is truly justified (yes for Afghanistan, no for Iraq). I'm pro fiscal responsibility and balanced budgets. I'm a social libertarian to the nth degree. I would suspect that on balance, yes, that makes me a centrist. But that's not the point of anything I do. I couldn't give a shit in most cases if a Democrat is Kucinich-progressive or Rodney Alexander/Martin Frost conservative. As I've written before and will write again, all factions of the Democratic party will see more of their agenda enacted under a Democratic congress and a Democratic president than under opposition control. That's all that matters. Under a Pelosi House, conservative Dems will still hold sway over various committees. Progressive Dems will still hold various powers in a Daschle senate. There's no reason why the various factions of the party cannot coexist under the same tent. And in fact, it makes us a richer party. Let the Republicans and the Club for Growth strive for ideological purity. Ruling parties are built on coalitions. It's reality in small, ethnically homogenous nations. It's more so in a large, diverse nation like ours.
