The Australian Democrats (DEM)
Origins: The Australian Democrats were established in 1977 by a number of reformist groups, including the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, led by former Liberal Party Minister, Don Chipp. The founders created the new party as a reaction to what they saw as the 'entrenched power and vested interests' of the major political parties – the ALP and the Liberal-National Party coalition. The Democrats' aimed to become a 'centre party' alternative, without ties to any particular economic sector (trade unions or business) so it could 'serve the best interests of all Australians'. Interests represented: The Australian Democrats aim to be a free political voice without vested interests. Generally, supporters have been diverse, issue-focused voters, tending to be young professionals but without grouping into clearly defined interest segments. Values: The Australian Democrats is a party of concerns rather than of a set ideology. It advocates a more participatory democracy with curbs on the power of unions and big business. The party claims that it has the most democratic operation of all Australian political parties. It supports the maintenance of significant public enterprise and a strong government role in correcting social inequality and in protecting the environment and human rights. In the Parliaments: In federal politics the party has held a number of Senate seats, which has often given it the 'balance of power' in national government. It has not succeeded in having members elected to the House of Representatives. In State Parliaments the party has had representation in the lower houses in Tasmania and South Australia and in the upper houses in three States: South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia.

Democrats, Republicans, "independents" promote big business agenda for '96 elections
Workers need their own political party
By the editorial board
In the initial stages of the 1996 presidential election campaign, two facts stand out: First, all of the announced and potential candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as the so-called independents, share a platform of austerity for workers and windfalls for the rich. The entire spectrum of official politics has swung so far to the right that the liberal wing of the Democratic Party supports attacks on the poor, the unemployed and the elderly that neither Reagan nor Bush would have dared propose. Second, broad masses of working people are alienated from the two- party system that has dominated US politics for well over a century. The widening class divisions in America are increasingly expressed in a crisis of the political superstructure. The visible decay of the Democratic Party, the prominence within the Republican Party of extreme right-wing and fascistic forces, the proliferation of self-styled "independents" such as H. Ross Perot, Colin Powell and Senator Bill Bradley and the growth of extraparliamentary militia groups are symptoms of a deep-going political malaise. The ruling class is acutely aware of widespread disaffection with the two big business parties. One means of adapting to this sentiment and channeling it in directions that do not threaten the fundamental interests of big business is the promotion of "independent" candidates and third parties which are based on the defense of the profit system.

For Immediate Release: Contact: Ian Stirton April 9, 1999 Ron Harris Sharon Snyder Kelly Huff FEC REPORTS ON POLITICAL PARTY ACTIVITY FOR 1997-98 From January 1, 1997, through December 31, 1998, national, state and local Republican party committees reported federal (hard dollar) receipts of $285 million and disbursements of $275.9 million. This is a 17% increase in fundraising and a 19% increase in spending when compared to the same period in the last mid-term election of 1993-94. Democratic committees raised $160 million and spent $155.3 million during 1997-98, an increase of 20% in receipts and 18% in disbursements when compared to 1993-94. Regarding federal candidate support, Republican committees contributed $2.6 million directly to candidates and spent $15.7 million in coordinated expenditures* on behalf of candidates. Democratic committees contributed $1.2 million in direct contributions and reported $18.6 million in coordinated expenditures. Coordinated expenditures by both parties declined overall in this cycle, and there were also significant shifts in this spending away from House and Senate Campaign Committees toward state parties and, for Democrats, the Democratic National Committee. Democrats also reported $1.5 million in independent expenditures while Republicans reported only $263,646.

  • Joe Conason's Journal Democrats have only themselves to blame. No excuses Whatever eventually happens in Louisiana, the Democrats have lost control of the Senate. The nation will return almost immediately to the Republican domination of the executive, legislative and judicial branches that existed before Vermont's Jim Jeffords turned independent last year. Now the Democratic voters who chose not to show up Tuesday are going to find out what their decision meant, in a country ruled by President Bush, Trent Lott and Tom DeLay. From drilling in Alaska to regressive taxation to unilateral war, the agenda of the corporate and religious right will shape our future. In this historic election, Bush overcame his weaknesses as a statesman with his skills as a politician. While I dislike what he represents and what he does, I can't deny his determination and enterprise. Against a drifting, disorganized Democratic Party, he hustled the money, the issues and the voters. He saw the opportunity and embraced the risk, big time. He fully exploited the advantages of his office, including his ability as commander in chief to foment an atmosphere of war. In several contests he made an important difference, creating the conditions for his party's momentum. So the president's supporters will insist again, as they did in the wake of Sept. 11, that he has achieved the mandate that eluded him two years ago.

WebMaster The New Party is a progressive political organization taking root around the U.S. By starting small and thinking long-term, we're building a multi-racial, lively and creative political organization that can, over time, break the stranglehold that corporate money and corporate media have over our political process. For the last ten years we have focused on local elections, and have won more than 300 of our first 400 races.
    For example:
    • In Madison, Wisconsin, eight of twenty city council members are members of Progressive Dane, the New Party affiliate. ProDane has successfully used their clout to push for municipal policies and programs that support affordable housing and tenants' rights, living wages, and campaign finance reform.
In Missoula, Montana, the Missoula New Party has consistently held 3-5 of twelve city council seats. With their active membership and their block of council votes, the group has effectively advocated for municipal policies that promote affordable housing and control urban sprawl and recently passed a municipal living wage ordinance.

    Single-party, two-party, and multi-party governments
In single-party states , only one political party is legally allowed to hold effective power. Although minor parties may sometimes be allowed, they are legally required to accept the leadership of the dominant party. This party may not always be, however, identical to the government, although sometimes positions within the party may be in fact more important than positions within the government. In one party dominant states , opposition parties are allowed, but are widely considered to have no real chance of gaining power. Often, the dominant party will remain in power by using

    • Democrats are crafting laws to give the middle class a tax break in contrast to the Republican schemes that benefit large corporations and wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

    Political Party Timeline: 1836-1864
The political party system entered an era of change when the issues surrounding slavery took center stage. Fears were spurred by the threat of slavery or of abolition in new territories; the influx of immigrants; the rise of industry; and the perpetual conflict over states' rights. These concerns drove many Americans to seek different political alliances. New parties sprung up, representing the nation's widely differing opinions. Some of these parties were short-lived, since they represented such narrow interests. Amid this turmoil, the Republican Party was born... and the Whig Party disappeared. Whigs: Henry Clay
The Whig Party formed out of the National Republican Party, the leaders of which were John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. They were nationalists, supported internal improvements and moral reforms, and desired gradual westward expansion in congruence with economic growth and modernization . The Whigs were based in New England and New York, mostly made up of Northern middle-class people, market-oriented farmers, and native-born skilled workers. In 1836, the Whigs factioned off, but generally united against Jackson's policies of the last eight years. They especially disliked Martin Van Buren, Jackson's hand-chosen successor.
    Democrats: Martin Van Buren
The Democrats were the successors of Jeffersonian democracy. They favored localism and freedom from modern institutions such as banks, factories, and reform movements. They had a commitment to states' rights, a limited government, and an
