Related Category: British And Irish History Liberal Democrats, British political party created in 1988 by the merger of the Liberal party with the Social Democratic party ; the party was initially called the Social and Liberal Democratic party. The Social Democratic party, which was formed in 1981 by politically centrist members of the Labour party , joined with the Liberals in 1981 in an electoral alliance, and in 1983 they won 23 seats in the House of Commons. In 1987 the alliance won 22 seats, and the next year the parties merged. In the 1997 parliamentary elections the Liberal Democrats won 46 seats, the largest number won by the group since the predecessor Liberals held 59 seats in 1929. Nonetheless, the party remains a minor party in British politics, its centrist position threatened by Tony Blair 's movement of the Labour party away from socialist positions. The current party leader is Charles Kennedy.

POLITICAL PARTIES. Except for an interlude during Reconstruction, qv the Democratic party qv was the leading political party in Texas until the 1960s. In the nineteenth century, however, the Whig, American (Know-Nothing), Republican, Greenback, and People's parties qv provided at different times a formidable opposition, so that Texas did not become a real one-party state until after 1900, when the Republican party sank into insignificance and minor parties largely disappeared. In the first half of the twentieth century Texas voters came to look upon the Democratic primary as the real election, because its nominees were largely unopposed in the general election and because Democratic factionalism in the primaries in reality substituted for party politics. During the New Deal period Texas Democratic factions began to develop in a more pronounced form and to take on a definite pattern of conservatism versus liberalism. In the 1930s and 1940s minor parties developed both to the left and to the right of the state's Democratic party-Jeffersonian Democrats qv in 1936, Democrats for Wilkie in 1940, Texas Regulars

The Democratic Party emerged under Thomas Jefferson in the 1790s in opposition to the Federalist Party. It initially drew most of its support from Southern planters and Northern farmers. Its good organization and popular appeal kept it in power for most of the time between 1825 and 1860. This included John Quincy Adams Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren James Polk (1845-49) and Franklin Pierce (1853-47). and James Buchanan
The Republican Party was established at Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854 by a group of former members of the Whig Party and the Free-Soil Party . Its original founders were opposed to slavery and called for the repeal of the Kansas-Nebraska and the Fugitive Slave Law . Early members thought it was important to place the national interest above sectional interest and the rights of individual States.

Presidential Presence and Presidential Past
Ronald Reagan has died at 93. The plaudits for his contributions to this nation are no doubt deserved. His policies and programs while in office can finally be weighed by history and set to rest. Wherever you saw Mr. Reagan when he was President you were struck by his bearing and charisma. "Presidential Presence and Presidential Past"

The Reagan Legacies
I am clearly, fundamentally and unabashedly a liberal Democrat, strange for one raised in a strong Republican family. At the very moment I was allowed to choose my own personal party affiliation I had no question, no doubt which party my ideals most closely paralleled. For nearly twenty-five years I've held that the liberal positions are the most compassionate and the most focused on the well-being of the individual. I've voted accordingly. Admittedly, the vote has often been against the Republican candidate rather than for the Democrat. I can accept that compromise on general principle alone.

Watching Parliament on TV can be really confusing. But it is important to know the difference between the MPs and what they stand for so your vote can go to the candidate, MP, or party who you think will represent the interests of you and your community. Political parties in the UK are voted in by the electorate - majority of the population over the age of 18 who are entitled to vote . The process is pretty simple:
  • The Prime Minister can call for a General Election at any time within 5 years of his or her term to choose the UK government. A minimum of 3 weeks later there's an election, where you get to vote for your Member of Parliament (MP) for your local constituency and as a result, you vote for the UK government. MPs can be independent, representing their own manifesto, or members of a Political Party (e.g Conservative Party, Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, SNP, etc) who represent their political party's manifesto.

At present seven parties are represented in the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament). Members of the Riksdag who belong to the same party make up a parliamentary party group.
The party groups play an important and influential role in the work of the Riksdag and the political life of Sweden. They have secretariats of their own which work closely together with the other sections of the party organization. All important issues are discussed in the party groups before final decisions are reached in committees and in the Chamber. The Constitution contains no formal regulations prescribing how the party groups should work. The groups are mentioned only in connection with elections within the Riksdag and consultations with the Speaker. The work in the party groups is conducted according to the parties’ own rules and practices, but there are many organizational and procedural similarities between the different party groups. Historical background
As early as the 18th century, during the Age of Liberty (1718 –1772), two groups – the Hats and the Caps – emerged in the Riksdag of the Estates. To a certain extent, these groups functioned like modern parties and they came to play a major role in the political life of their age. They had supporters in all four Estates of the Riksdag and alternated as the ruling party in much the same way as parties do today.

E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 by CommonDreams.org Should the Green Party Run a Presidential Candidate in 2004? YES!
    by Blair Bobier
The Green Party is in the news again. And the stories aren’t flattering. No, we’re not seeing articles how this “third” party has struggled heroically against all odds to win elected posts from Maine to San Francisco, or how Green mayors, city councilors and school board members are dramatically improving the lives of constituents from coast to coast. The Green Party is in the news again because the general sentiment which emerged from a recent meeting of national delegates is—gasp!—we want to run a candidate for president. The pundits are having a field day. Never mind that this country has dispatched troops to Afghanistan and Iraq (and Colombia, Panama, Grenada, Vietnam, etc.) all in the name of multi-party democracy. That sort of thing is fine elsewhere, but watch out if you try it here—in the land of the free. It’s as though the United States performs amazing feats of democracy abroad all the while flashing a message: Kids, don’t try this at home. Should the Green Party Run a Presidential Candidate in 2004?
