CNN - Catherine Bond, June 5, 2003 Background
The current conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo), has been raging for over four years and has taken more lives than any other war since World War II and is the deadliest documented conflict in African history. More than three and a half million people have lost their lives in the war. Every day men, women, and children live in constant fear of being killed, robbed, raped, kidnapped, forced into military service, or displaced from their homes by rebels. The conflict is mainly based in the district of Ituri and is an outcome of intertwined confrontations. The Hema and Lendu communities are both the central actors and victims of ethnic strife over communal access to land, mineral resources and local power. Uganda, Rwanda and Kinshasa are also waging a proxy war in Ituri. According to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, between 500,000 to 600,000 internally displaced persons, in addition to 100,000 refugees from Uganda and the Sudan, are dispersed throughout the area.

Police co-operation in Africa Interpol high representative visit in Africa 2003 History of the membership Fact sheet: Africa Sub-Directorate Countries of the four sub-regions of Africa south of Sahara Nairobi Sub-Regional Bureau
History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.

Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, January 2000July 2001
In 1988, the World Health Assembly, governing body of the World Health Organization (WHO), resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis globally by 2000 ( ). In the African Region (AFR), WHO member countries began to implement polio eradication strategies in 1995. Although rapid progress has occurred in much of eastern and southern Africa, wild poliovirus transmission continues to occur in four priority countries: Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), Ethiopia, and Nigeria ( ). This report summarizes progress toward polio eradication in Angola, DR Congo, Ethiopia, and Nigeria during January 2000July 2001, and indicates that 11 of 12 cases of wild poliovirus in AFR were identified in these priority countries during JanuaryJuly 2001 ( Figure 1
Routine Vaccination
The four priority countries have reported low rates of routine coverage with three doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV3). In 2000, reported OPV3 coverage among infants was 42% in DR Congo, 42% in Ethiopia, 38% in Nigeria, and 33% in Angola.
Supplemental OPV Vaccination Activities
Supplemental OPV vaccination activities were conducted in all four priority countries in 2000 and 2001. In Angola, three rounds of national immunization days (NIDs)* were conducted in June, July, and August 2000 with an additional subnational immunization day (SNID)

Despite vast natural resources, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its troubled history continues with the present conflict, which broke out in 1998.

The human impact of the present war has been immense, with 4.7 million people killed by fighting, starvation and disease. Millions have been forced to leave their homes, with many children separated from their families and thousands orphaned by AIDS. Rape, a widely used weapon of war, has increased the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Christian Aid has field offices in Kinshasa, western DRC, and in Bukavu, eastern DRC, and works with 30 partner organisations in the country. All programmes are carried out by our partners and focus on making sure people have enough food; rehabilitating displaced people; supporting small businesses; HIV/AIDS work; peace projects and rebuilding lives after the volcanic eruption in Goma.

History Since 1997 the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DROC; formerly called Zaire) has been rent by ethnic strife and civil war, touched off by a massive inflow in 1994 of refugees from the fighting in Rwanda and Burundi. The government of former president MOBUTU Sese Seko was toppled by a rebellion led by Laurent KABILA in May 1997; his regime was subsequently challenged by a Rwanda- and Uganda-backed rebellion in August 1998. Troops from Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Chad, and Sudan intervened to support the Kinshasa regime. A cease-fire was signed on 10 July 1999 by the DROC, Zimbabwe, Angola, Uganda, Namibia, Rwanda, and Congolese armed rebel groups RCD-G and MLC, but sporadic fighting continued. KABILA was assassinated on 16 January 2001 and his son Joseph KABILA was named head of state on 26 January 2001. Despite taking a radically different approach than his father, the new president has been equally unsuccessful in ending the war.
