In 1998, the American Federation of Teachers put out the call for people to join the teaching profession, estimating that 2.2 million teachers would be needed in the United States over the next 10 years. There are many reasons why teachers are needed. One is that women, who for years have made up the majority of teachers, now have many more career choices. In the course of a single generation, new worlds of opportunity have opened for them. In addition, many of today's college graduates are steering toward technical fields or specializing in professions deemed to be more lucrative than teaching. As a result, states and school districts have adapted requirements and started programs to help college graduates earn teaching certification without having to start school all over again. Delaware also faces the need for teachers in its classrooms, and that need is reflected in state partnerships with the University of Delaware and the state's own Department of Education Web site. College campuses have geared up to meet the need for teachers as well.
