MISSION STATEMENT
Holland Township School, a hub in a developing rural community,
is committed to providing the strongest educational foundation
on which all our children can build a successful and productive future.
Through diverse, intellectual, cultural and social learning experiences,
each child will be challenged to reach his or her fullest potential
in a safe and nurturing environment.
HOLLAND TOWNSHIP SCHOOL is located in Hunterdon County , a rural, hilly area of northwestern New Jersey, on the Delaware River. Our school has about 690 students in grades Kindergarten through eight, 63 teachers, many support staff and three administrators. We offer a comprehensive program including the core subjects of reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies as well as vocal and instrumental music, Spanish, computer education, gifted and talented, health and physical education, and art. Our library has an automated card catalog. Our school has 2 computer labs, and our building is networked and connected to the internet via a T1 line. We were named a Star School by the New Jersey Department of Education in 1995-1996 because we were a leader in the use of technology in an elementary school. HISTORY: Holland Township covers approximately 26 square miles. Until well into the 20th century it was a farm community. Because of the dense forests and hilly terrain, the farms were small, most only 100 to 300 acres. Grains, as well as livestock were raised. In addition there were several mills, a gravel quarry, and other businesses such as blacksmith shops and shoemakers, which served the needs of the community. The present school was built in 1939 and has been added to many times. However, small schools were established in our area as far back as the Revolutionary war era.

Clay Sprays May Control Harmful Algal Blooms
Harmful algal blooms, or HABs, can harm fish, birds and even people who are exposed to the toxic algae. HABs come in many forms, including a red tide that regularly affects Florida waters, a brown tide organism, and Pfiesteria piscicida, an algae associated with fish kills. Scientists are unsure of exactly what causes the blooms, but a Woods Hole Sea Grant research team may have come up with a way to treat the increasingly common occurrences. Don Anderson and Mario Sengco are testing the use of clay to manage and control HABs. Clay, mixed with seawater, is sprayed over the algal bloom, where it binds with the harmful organisms and sinks to the bottom. In laboratory experiments meant to mimic field conditions, results showed that the clay removed 80 to 90 percent of the toxins in 2-hour treatments. Korea and Japan have used clay to control HABs periodically. In Korea clay is used mainly in aquaculture operations, which provide about 30 percent of Korea's fish. The concept has not caught on yet in the U.S.

Wilmington, DE 19801
Founded in 1979, The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts is a fabulous resource for artists and those who appreciate fine art. Indeed, DCCA was established by artists, and artists continue to play an important role in policy making. DCCA's commitment to art and its community is exemplified in one of its mission statements: "Exhibitions and programs will include, but not be limited to, work that explores the boundaries of contemporary art, reflects the interests of artists and the community and brings into focus national directions and current issues . . . ." The Center includes four galleries which, combined, present some twenty-seven exhibitions each year. The Main Gallery features works by both emerging and nationally recognized artists. Thematic exhibits highlight national trends. The Elizabeth Avery Draper Showcase Gallery features contemporary crafts. The Member's Gallery shows the works of regional artists. And the Member's Gallery (at the Delaware Center for Horticulture) highlights regional artists who work with traditional floral, landscape and horticultural themes. Representative of the quality to be found here was the recent exhibition
