Thoughts for National Map Workshop Mike Mahaffie
Delaware Geographic Data Committee
Delaware Office of State Planning Coordination
General Thoughts In Delaware, we have tried to focus our efforts with the following Problem Statement worked out and approved by the Delaware I-Team: Dependable and accurate spatial data is essential to planning, assessment and many other operations in different levels of government and in the private sector. Spatial datasets can be expensive to produce and maintain. A wide variety of Delaware state agencies, county agencies, and local governments produce GIS datasets that must be fully shared and integrated to reap the full value of spatially enabled information. An uncoordinated approach to the development and use of spatial data wastes taxpayer money and reduces the value of information generated by the use of that data. It is wasteful and duplicative for different agencies and levels of government to invest time and money in the creation and maintenance of the same datasets.

... VISITORS CENTER City of Wilmington, Delaware Wilmington is strategically located approximately mid-point between New York and Washington. Philadelphia's International Airport, the Greater Wilmington Airport, and Amtrak's main east coast line provide national and international accessibility. Three major interstate highways, excellent state highways and scenic U.S. routes link Wilmington to the entire east coast. One third of the nation's population and income is within a 350 mile radius of the City. Wilmington is home to more than 72,000 people of diverse backgrounds. Wilmington is often referred to as the "corporate capital of the world". Over half of the Fortune 500 companies call Wilmington their corporate home. The unique synergism that exists between government, business and labor has successfully addressed the issue of infrastructure rebuilding, leading the City to its position as financial, governmental and corporate hub of the State and region. Efficient mass transportation, ample parking and a dynamic environment for more than 40,000 workers who live, work and play downtown, are evidence of the City's rebirth. A number of public/private partnerships have contributed to an outstanding growth record.

  • 80. History Of Delaware County - Ashmead, Ch. I, (Page 1)
Chapter I. Physical geography and Geology of delaware County (Contributedby Elwood Harvey, MD, Chester). The surface of the county
    http://www.delcohistory.org/ashmead/ashmead_pg1.htm
Chapter I Physical Geography and Geology of Delaware County
(Contributed by Elwood Harvey, M.D., Chester) The surface of the county is hilly with very little exception in its western part, but somewhat level in its eastern portion. Its drainage is by several small streams, called creeks, that flow in a southerly direction and empty into the Delaware River. These and their tributary branches make Delaware a well-watered county. Almost every country house is supplied from a never-failing spring of pure, soft water, and nearly all the fields of every farm have running streams through them. Under such circumstances, and they occur every year, two miles of width of water that is several degrees warmer than the general atmosphere has a very perceptible modifying influence. Fruits and flowers remain untouched by frost for several weeks after hard freezing has occurred in other parts of the county. In summer, evaporation keeps the river cooler than the surface of the land, which, becoming heated by the sun's rays, radiates the heat into the air above it. The air expanding by the heat becomes lighter, and raises, and is replaced by the heavier air from the river, which flows with refreshing coolness and moisture over the parched land. These river breezes are of daily occurrence whenever the surface of the land is warm and dry, and their visits are delightfully acceptable. The geology of the county is somewhat peculiar. Our rocks belong to the earliest formations known to geologists. They were formed by the first process of hardening, which occurred when the surface of the great red-hot drop of molten matter which now constitutes the earth had cooled to the hardening-point. Having been formed by cooling from a melted condition, they are crystalline in structure. It appears that they have not been submerged in the water of seas or lakes, where, if they had been, deposits of mud, sand, and gravel might have been washed upon them, to afterwards be hardened into rocks, but that since rocks have existed on the earth these have been a part of dry land. They contain no traces of the remains of organic beings, such as are found in the stratified rocks that are formed under water.
