high temperatures on a given day in the United States to reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40 degrees Celsius). The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
  • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
  • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
  • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
  • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

Geography
Together with Eastern Shore Maryland and Virginia, Delaware occupies the Delmarva peninsula. It lies on the northeast of the peninsula, facing the Delaware River, which broadens into Delaware Bay; the bay in turn joins the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Henlopen. Delaware is sometimes called the Diamond State, a reference to its small size but relative wealth. With the Delaware River and Bay along its entire eastern edge, no place in the narrow state is far from water. Many small rivers flow across the state, some flowing E to the Delaware, others W across Maryland to the Chesapeake. In the north the Christina and Brandywine flow into the Delaware; in the south the Nanticoke flows SW to Chesapeake Bay. The land is low-lying, from sand dunes in the south to rolling hills on the Pennsylvania border in the north; the average elevation is c.60 ft (18 m), and the highest point, NW of Wilmington on the Pennsylvania border, is only 440 ft (134 m). The capital is Dover , and the only large city is Wilmington Sections in this article:

B.S. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (atmospheric science), 1982 Brief biography: I have long had an interest in weather and climate, which probably is related to growing up on a dairy farm in southeastern Wisconsin. I completed my B.S. in Atmospheric Science in 1982, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In addition to meteorology, I took some climatology and physical geography courses offered by the Geography Department. Those classes piqued my interest in geography, especially Donn Haglund's Arctic Winter Field Course, which that year took us to Greenland and Iceland. I decided to do graduate work in a Geography department, opting to pursue climatology rather than meteorology. I completed my graduate work in the Geography Department at the University of Delaware, receiving an M.S. in Geography in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Climatology in 1992. I joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in January of 1992.

The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.
