Note: for non-American visitors, it may be helpful to know that the concept of Extension in the USA applies to educational and other outreach activities in a range of areas involving food, food safety, agriculture and other home and family activities. These have historically been carried on in colleges and universities which benefitted from a 1890 Land-Grant program, and the departments are known as Extension or Cooperative Extension universities and departments.

Resource Directory for Older People Introduction Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find the information. ~Samuel Johnson~ The Resource Directory for Older People is designed to help people find the information they need. A cooperative effort of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Administration on Aging (AoA), the directory is intended to serve a wide audience including health and legal professionals, social service providers, librarians, and researchers, as well as older people and their families. The directory contains organizational names, addresses, phone numbers, and fax numbers, as well as email and website addresses. The directory lists Federal agencies, AoA-supported resource centers, professional societies, private groups, and volunteer programs. Some deal mainly with older people and their families, while others serve professionals who work with older adults, and still others target people of all ages. Inclusion in the directory does not imply an endorsement by NIA or AoA. The directory is arranged alphabetically by organization name, and there is a general subject index. Every effort was made to publish a brief but accurate overview about each listed organization. Readers should contact each organization directly if they want more detailed information.

FAMILY CIRCLES OFFERS SUPPORT TO RELATIVE CAREGIVERS
Participants help one another deal with the challenges of raising relatives' children
Throughout Delaware, a program called Family Circles is helping grandparents and other family caregivers face the unique challenges of raising their relatives' children. Family Circles support and education groups are available through the Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities (DSAAPD) at locations in Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown, Frankford and Ellendale. The groups meet weekly or monthly, providing participants with much-needed resources and information, as well as support and advice from peers - other grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are raising someone else's child. "We provide counseling and networking, and we also invite speakers to talk about issues such as addiction, welfare reform, family court, the Delaware Student Testing Program, nutrition, respite care and more," said Patricia Anderson-Rice, director of the Du Pont Grandparent Resource Center at the Wilmington Senior Center. "Our participants range in age from 35 to 80. They support and encourage each other through difficult times and are able to share what they've learned from their own experiences."

What is Living Healthy: The Heart of the Matter? TEAMwork for Quality Living (TQL), a grassroots organization focused on improving the health and quality of life of local residents, and Cardinal Health System teamed up in early 2001 to address one of Delaware County's most serious health threats: cardiovascular disease. Using convening and leadership expertise, TQL brought together many community partners to plan and lead this vitally important effort. Thus, Living Healthy: The Heart of the Matter was born. Under this name, the group planned for over a year on how to best approach the issue of cardiovascular disease. Through their ingenuity and funding from the Delaware County Department of Health, one of the most unique programs Delaware County has ever seen was created. The program is designed to help individuals, with Syndrome X risk factors, adopt healthy lifestyles to decrease their risk for a cardiovascular incident. Additionally, although not directly related to Syndrome X , tobacco use, the single most preventable cause of death, is also a focus of the program. The initial objective was to launch a small

AHEC Preceptors/Sites A crucial part of our mission involves linking 4th year medical students with Medical Preceptors in the community. Our goal is to help facilitate the process that allows the students to become familiar with the issues encountered in rural communities. The student can also begin to establish relationships which will prove beneficial should they decide to practice in a rural area. Eastcentral PA AHEC places students with primary care physicians in ambulatory settings in the following counties: Carbon, Berks, Lehigh, Northampton and Schuylkill. The list below provides information regarding each site. Students who have chosen an Eastcentral PA AHEC rotation must call Mary P. Ward, Health Educator, at 610/379-2001 to select a location in one of the five counties and to receive information related to housing. Following the list of preceptors is a listing of links valuable to preceptors and students alike. EASTCENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA AHEC PRECEPTORS Ronald E. Baird, D.O.

According to a study published in the January 21 issue of Obesity Research, providing medical treatment to obese Americans cost $75 billion in 2003. The study, State-Level Estimates of Annual Medical Expenditures Attributable to Obesity , was sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control to estimate the state-by-state costs of obesity, separate from costs incurred from those related to overweight, which cumatively amounts to $93 billion. Several state legislators have been confronted with concrete numbers of how much obesity has affected their states in terms of health care costs, from $87 million in Wyoming to $7.7 billion in California. These numbers may be used by lawmakers to justify obesity related legislation touching on snack taxes, physical education standards and vending machine restrictions.
