University of North Texas Debate Team UNT Debate Team Homepage The UNT Debate Team is committed to excellence in NDT policy debate at the national level. The UNT Debate Team attends 15-20 tournaments annually at the national and regional levels of competition, including: Wake Forest, Northwestern, Kentucky, Southern California, and Harvard. Debate teams from UNT have qualified for the national championship tournament (the NDT) in twelve of the past thirteen years. In 1986, one UNT debate team finished fifth in the nation. In additional to tournament travel, the UNT Debate Team participates in a variety of other activities, including hosting a high school tournamnent, the Texas Tournament of Champions (TTOC). This tournament is a qualifier for the national Tournament of Champions, and the top speaker award at the TTOC is named in honor of Jim Wright, former speaker of the United States House of Representatives. At the 1995 TTOC, Speaker Wright attended the tournament and presented the top speaker award at the awards assembly. The UNT Debate Team also hosts an invitational college tournament, the William DeMougeot Debates. Dr. Mark DeLoach, the Director of Debate and Forensics at UNT, is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies at UNT. Part of his duties involve administering the activities of the UNT Debate Team. This degree of institutional support is unparalleled at state institutions in Texas. Dr. DeLoach directs a staff of assistant debate coaches who are active in research, coaching, judging, and travel. UNT also employs a full-time research assistant for the debate team, a feature found at only a handful of universities across the nation. | |
