UNT Debate Team Homepage
The UNT Debate Team is committed to excellence in NDT policy debate at the national level. The UNT Debate Team attends 15-20 tournaments annually at the national and regional levels of competition, including: Wake Forest, Northwestern, Kentucky, Southern California, and Harvard. Debate teams from UNT have qualified for the national championship tournament (the NDT) in twelve of the past thirteen years. In 1986, one UNT debate team finished fifth in the nation.
In additional to tournament travel, the UNT Debate Team participates in a variety of other activities, including hosting a high school tournamnent, the Texas Tournament of Champions (TTOC). This tournament is a qualifier for the national Tournament of Champions, and the top speaker award at the TTOC is named in honor of Jim Wright, former speaker of the United States House of Representatives. At the 1995 TTOC, Speaker Wright attended the tournament and presented the top speaker award at the awards assembly. The UNT Debate Team also hosts an invitational college tournament, the William DeMougeot Debates. Dr. Mark DeLoach, the Director of Debate and Forensics at UNT, is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies at UNT. Part of his duties involve administering the activities of the UNT Debate Team. This degree of institutional support is unparalleled at state institutions in Texas. Dr. DeLoach directs a staff of assistant debate coaches who are active in research, coaching, judging, and travel. UNT also employs a full-time research assistant for the debate team, a feature found at only a handful of universities across the nation.

DEBATE: SHOULD THE U.S. ANNEX THE PHILLIPPINES? HISTORICAL CONTEXT Americans divided sharply in 1899 over whether to annex the Philippines as part of the United States. In 1900, Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, running for a second time against William McKinley, made anti-imperialism the central issue of his campaign. McKinley won easily, and historian Walter LaFeber has argued that Bryan's defeat showed that the American public had reached a fundamental consensus in favor of American expansionism abroad. "By 1899," he concludes, "the United States had forged a new empire." Still, the conflict between imperialists, isolationists, and Filipinos who fought for their nation's independence would echo in debates over U.S foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. THEMES Conflicts between imperialism, isolationism, and movements for national self-determination OBJECTIVES Students will: 1) analyze contemporary arguments for and against U.S. annexation of the Philippines at the turn of the century

Bioethics: Debates in Human Genetics
Aleta Sullivan
Abstract
Debating in the biology classroom? Of course, and why not? Debates have been a part of my biology classroom experience for several years, as I' sure they have been a part of yours. In science, teachers have always used a form of performance assessment, primarily as part of a lab grade, but I propose that we also incorporate debate, mock trial, parody, and other alternate methods that allow the "non-science" student a chance to excel. I admit I was once a lecturer; I am now a facilitator to my students. Debates in the classroom provide performance assessment opportunities for teachers and students. Bioethical decision-making is a perfect tool for debates in the classroom. Target: High School Biology

Activity 1: Student Debates
Running debates in the classroom is relatively simple and requires few materials. Simply assign cooperative learning groups giving each group the affirmative or negative of a particular premise. Debate preparation, presentation, and evaluation last about one week and the results are well worth the time investment. I generally have six premises prepared for the debate activity, but each year the students supply one or two really good premises. Some sample premises are listed below:
  • A couple has one son with Tay-Sachs. In their second pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis indicates that the fetus has Tay-Sachs. The parents choose to abort the fetus.
