"A person's a person, no matter how small." -Dr. Seuss Statement of Purpose:
McNeese Students for Life is a pro-life student organization at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, that is devoted to upholding the value of life through promoting awareness, education, support, and healing.
Starting with the belief that every human life is equally valuable from conception to natural death regardless of age, race, gender, and disability, we wish to challenge the "freedom of choice" that cripples women into thinking they cannot care for their children.
Freedom of choice ignores men and erases their role and responsibility as fathers. We wish to challenge the "freedom of choice" that condemns the innocent and helpless to death, especially those most innocent and helpless, the unborn.
If you are willing to join us in this fight for the dignity of human life, we will accept you with open arms please join us! In January of 2002, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, McNeese Students for Life put up 4000 crosses in the main quadrangle in memory of the 4000 babies aborted each day in the United States. The Topic:
Debate Easier - A debate is a discussion between sides with different views. Persons speak for or against something before making a decision. Harder - Two thousand years ago, citizens of Athens held regularly scheduled public assemblies. Peoples' votes determined the policies and actions of the state. Citizens decided whether Athens went to war and how it fought. They created the laws that impacted their daily life. But the votes were always preceded by debates where citizens and leaders argued about the right choices, what was morally and legally right, the best way to achieve a desired outcome, and what was possible and prudent. Debates are a means of encouraging critical thinking, personal expression, and tolerance of others' opinions. Today, debate still remains essential to democracy. Debates are conducted in governing assemblies, held in lecture halls and public arenas, presented in schools and universities, written in newspaper and magazine columns, heard on radio, or seen on the television. Like our predecessors in ancient Greece, people argue about what is best for their societies and shape the course of law, policy, and action.

Uranium: The Debate
Mining Activity - Uranium and the Environment Activity #2 - The Debate: Using Nuclear Energy in Saskatchewan Background Information It has been proposed by some groups of people that Saskatchewan should use nuclear energy for electrical generation. There have been many news articles written about this issue, illustrating both negative and positive opinions on the subject. Views made from these articles are listed for you. Use these ideas to help answer the question posed in the activity. Viewpoints Positive:
  • There is a growing need for electrical power.
  • There will be less atmospheric pollution in the form of acid rain and the green house effect because nuclear energy generating stations emit little sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide.
  • Saskatchewan coal is high in uranium content so it is already emitting radiation into the atmosphere when it is burned.
  • There is a limited supply of coal, natural gas and crude oil left, compared to uranium and the amount needed to provide for our energy needs.
  • The risk of a nuclear accident is small when compared to the long term damage to the environment caused by coal-fired plants.

    Death Penalty Debate
After hundreds of years, the debate over the death penalty still rages in Canada. Students completing the activities in this section will have the opportunity to research and educate their classmates about the death penalty debate, list and analyze the arguments for and against capital punishment, write an opinion piece defending a thesis that supports or opposes the death penalty using the cases of Steven Truscott and Clifford Olson as examples, and conduct a formal debate about the death penalty. Using a variety of Web-based resources, they also have the opportunity to investigate and create a media work about the events of the mass execution of eight aboriginal Canadians following the massacre at Frog Lake. LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITIES
    Games Energy Plays
    Objectives - Language Arts
    1. Students will prepare information and participate in a well-planned debate. 2. Students will create an original game for the purpose of reviewing important environmental concerns. 3. Students will prepare and perform a pre-written play on the effects of air pollutants on our environment.
    Module Overview - Language Arts
The language arts portion of this unit revolves around games. The first activity involves debating, sometimes called "the game of wits." Debating has its own set of rules, resulting in winners and losers. Activity 2 offers the students a chance to create their own set of rules for an original game. The optional activity suggested is a play which allows the students to creatively present one issue that affects us all. The focus of these activities is on critical and creative thinking. Students will have the opportunity to express themselves in oral and written form.
    Suggested Teaching Strategies
In order for students to lead productive, healthy lives, they need to be able to communicate effectively. This includes having the ability to agree and disagree with others. It is an important skill for students to be able to create a convincing argument based on factual information with the absence of emotion. Discussion and debate are the key problem-solving tools of our way of life. Debate helps students become effective problem-solving members of our society. To help the students develop this skill, they will organize critical information on energy topics and participate in structured debates.

    Changing Scenes of the Mesozoic
Have students research the plants and animals of the Triassic period. Ask each student to pick two organisms—a plant and an animal—to research. Designate a wall or bulletin board in your classroom as the setting for a Triassic forest scene and have students decorate and label it with their chosen organisms. Students should decide on a scale and try to make their organisms as close to scale as possible. Have students make a second wall scene for the Jurassic and a third for the Cretaceous. When the forest scenes are complete, have students present the characteristics of their organisms to the class. Students should explain whether or not their chosen organisms successfully adapted during the three different time periods and hypothesize why.
Asteroid vs. Volcano: Dinosaur Extinction Debate
The asteroid theory of dinosaur extinction, though very popular since Luis Alvarez first presented it in 1980, is a theory. Theories are hypotheses supported by interpretations of data; most generate conflicting views. Another explanation for the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction is the volcano greenhouse theory originated by Dewey M. McLean in 1978. Divide the class into two groups (asteroids and volcanoes), and have students research the theory they’ve been assigned. Among the plentiful resources for this debate are the two original papers:

Desertification is the process whereby non-desert lands become desert-like. It refers to changes in isolated patches of land as well as to changes in land bordering recognized deserts. Although there is much debate on the causes of the process as there is on its solution, most scientists agree that it is brought about by a mixture of both human and environmental factors. Changes in settlement patterns, increased population growth, drought , erosion, deforestation, overcultivation and overgrazing of land, are just some of the factors which contribute to it.
Suggestion: Team up with your students' science teacher to do an intensive unit on the process.
