Notes On April 15, 1975, at age 21, Karen Quinlan stopped breathing after ingesting alcohol, and an assortment of drugs. She was revived but suffered severe brain damage from anoxia and entered a vegetative state. In re Quinlan, 70 N.J. 10, 355 A. 2d 647, cert. denied, (1976) "Karen's father sought judicial approval to disconnect his daughter's respirator. The New Jersey Supreme Court granted the relief, holding that Karen had a right of privacy grounded in the Federal Constitution to terminate treatment. In re Quinlan , 70 N.J., at 3842, 355 A. 2d at 662664. Recognizing that this right was not absolute, however, the court balanced it against asserted state interests. Noting that the State's interest "weakens and the individual's right to privacy grows as the degree of bodily invasion increases and the prognosis dims," the court concluded that the state interests had to give way in that case. Id., at 41, 355 A. 2d, at 664. The court also concluded that the "only practical way" to prevent the loss of Karen's privacy right due to her incompetence was to allow her guardian and family to decide "whether she would exercise it in these circumstances." Ibid." From

Sedki Riad PhD To talk about dying and death in Islam, one first has to understand what Islam is about. The following is a brief introduction to this religion. References are given at the end for further reading on the subject. What is Islam?
The word Islam is an Arabic word that carries a load of meanings. The main two are submission and peace. Submission: Total submission to and acceptance of the One and Only God (Allah) and His will . Peace: Inner peace (peace with oneself), peace with the Creator, as well as peace with all creations . It is through the total submission to the will of God that one reaches this form of peace. A Muslim is a person who believes in Allah as the One and Only God and in Muhammad as his last Prophet and Messenger. Relationship between God and Human:
The human, like all of Allah's creations, is in a state of total submission (Islam) to the will of Allah. The difference between humans and other creations, however, is that we have been given the ability to choose. When our minds submit to Allah, then we would have completely submitted to Allah, and we would be referred to as "Muslims." At this level of total and complete submission, the relationship between Allah and the human is one of a complete peace. It is an Islamic characteristic to have complete obedience to Allah and acceptance of His will and commands. It is also an Islamic characteristic to acquire a unique feeling of satisfaction, fulfillment, and content as a result of this obedience and acceptance.

    http://www.aavc.vassar.edu/vq/spring2003/articles/beyond/death.html
    Fighting for Death with Dignity
After receiving her law degree from Lewis and Clark College, Lee was administrator and counsel for an Oregon State Senate committee, where she worked alongside Oregon State Senator Frank Roberts, who had terminal prostate cancer. Lee saw his proposed aid-in-dying bill defeated in the state senate and a similar ballot measure narrowly defeated in Washington State. The issue still sparks passionate debate. Much of the moral controversy surrounding assisted dying concerns its potential misuse or abuse, with opponents fearing that individuals might end their lives too quickly or that the decision might not be completely voluntary. Political debate centers on whether assisted dying falls under state or federal jurisdiction. It is in this area that Lee has encountered fierce opposition from the federal government, via Attorney General John Ashcroft. In November 2001, the Justice Department issued its determination that the Controlled Substances Act prohibits Oregon doctors from prescribing lethal doses of medication to terminally ill patients, and thus bars doctors from using the Oregon law. www.compassionindying.org

Sentence upheld in Green Bay assisted suicide case
The Associated Press Donna Trautman, 60, was convicted of assisting the suicide death of 66-year-old Raymond Krerowicz on April 23, 2001, at his home in Green Bay. He had terminal prostate cancer. Besides the two-year prison term, Trautman was ordered to serve six years of extended supervision after being released from prison. The three-judge appeals court unanimously upheld the conviction and the prison term. Trautman contended the sentence was unduly harsh and that Brown County Circuit Judge Donald Zuidmulder abused his discretion by sentencing her according to a preconceived sentencing policy. Trautman became friends with Krerowicz in October 2000 when she moved into the apartment building where he lived, court records said. Trautman is incarcerated at Taycheedah Correctional Institution, where she eats her meals in her cell because she is unable to walk to the dining hall and is not permitted to be taken there in a wheelchair, court records said. A Pagan perspective on death and dying
Behold we arise with the dawn of time from the grey and misty sea, and with the dusk we sink in the western ocean, and the lives of a man are strung like pearls on the thread of his spirit.
from The Sea Priestess by Dion Fortune The Pagan view of death is a positive one. Most Pagans believe in reincarnation, and regard death as part of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The souls of the dead rest for a while in the Summerlands (the Pagan afterlife) before returning for another reincarnation. There is no doctrine of sin and redemption, rather everyone must evolve spiritually throughout their successive incarnations. Many souls return to Earth again and again, either because they love and cherish the planet, or because they wish to help others. In Hinduism, these souls are known as bodhisattvas We fear death because it appears to be the end. The ego cannot face the prospect of its own annihilation, and fears dissolution in the ground of all being. Therefore we hide death away, and banish the dying to anonymous hospital rooms. The art of dying well has been lost, and with it, the art of living. If we face the prospect of our own death without fear, it becomes possible to live life to the full.

AMERICAN BAPTIST RESOLUTION ON DEATH AND DYING
"The Christian faith affirms that life is a good gift of the Creator, who
wills us to live our lives to the fullest. God has given us the ability to
make choices, and calls us all to choose what is good, and right, and just.
God's gift in Jesus Christ is that we might 'have life, and have it abundantly'(John 10:10)." While we believe there is a life beyond death, we also affirm that death is a natural part of this existence and there are choices and decisions we must make to prepare for our own or another's dying.
These choices and decisions have been made more complex with the advances made
in recent years in expensive, sophisticated medical technology. Such technology has prolonged lives under circumstances which in earlier times would have resulted in death. In too many cases extraordinary measures have been taken to sustain a life with no apparent regard for the quality of that life nor for the wishes and desires of the dying person, and/or their family. In the worst scenario the extra years of the life saved may be spent in a chronically debilitated, demented or even unconscious condition.
The legal, ethical and moral issues inherent in these situations received

A word of caution: the information given here is not intended as medical advice. We do not advise you to follow any of these "treatments" yourself. We advise you to obtain a full medical diagnosis and discuss your treatment plan with your doctor. If you choose to use aromatherapy as part of your treatment, please seek out the help of a trained aromatherapist first. Case Study - Death and Dying Mr. C. was a 77 year old who was transferred into the Intensive Care Unit from the Veterans home. His admitting diagnosis was Acute Respiratory Failure. Medical history included morbid obesity (over 300 pounds) hypertension, chronic lung disease, and diabetes mellitus. He had recently recovered from pnuemonia. Mr. C. had no immediate family in the area, and only one living sister who lived out of state. During his 2 week stay in the ICU, he had no visitors. Emergency mechanical ventilation was instituted in the Emergency room, as well as other life-support measures. Mr. C had indicated in his living will that he wanted full medical care. Eventually a tracheostomy was placed, and he was weaned off of the ventilator support. However, his kidneys were failing and it became apparent that Mr. C. was losing the battle for life. Still unable to accept this, he continued to request full medical support, and did need to be replaced on ventilatory support. During this period he had gone from communicative and involved in his care, to depressed and withdrawn. Once again, he was weaned from the "breathing machine". Only this time the physician told him, that there was nothing more we could do. He was in complete renal failure, and sepsis, or blood poisoning was apparent.
