We do host here another Questionnaire on Death and Dying, written by Jerral Sapienza, Curator of the Bardo of Death Studies, responses from which are also updated regularly online. It is not strictly a research project from an academic point of view as was Laura's, but is more of an on-line journaling opportunity for submitting reflections on Death and Dying. It is a rather long questionnaire, designed to help you to think more thoughtfully about some of the greater questions of Death and Dying. Our Mission Our mission at the Bardo of Death Studies is to assist in the development of discourse, discussion, and archival materials related to personal experiences in Death and Dying. We serve as a friendly net repository for these personal reflections (both from the professional and the lay public) and a crossroads resource for others who happen by in search for personal reflection in their own time of need. Urgent Whispers: Care of the Dying
Order from Amazon.COM

The word "Bardo" comes from the Tibetan words "bar" meaning "in between"; "do" meaning "island" or "marking point." So we are here on the Net a quiet island or marking point between confusion and understanding more of the world of the dying, and caring for the dying as a caregiver. One particular resource we recommend for a significantly improved understanding of the world of caregiving is Jerral Sapienza's book, URGENT WHISPERS: Care of the Dying. If you are in a position at this time as a caregiver or have recently lost a friend or loved one then this book may be a resource for you to better understand the place where you now find yourself. The Questionnaire
Another of our primary missions here is to provide a forum for discussion and sharing of folks' stories of their loved one's death experiences, and how they as family member, friend or caregiver processed it. Our primary vehicle for eliciting response is an in-depth GuestBook /

49. The Hero Bound And Pierced:
Structuralist interpretation of the English ballad The death of Robin Hood , with comparisons to nine similar stories told in Britain over the centuries.

The Dying Hero: A Recurring Mythic Pattern in British Legend A Structuralist Interpretation by Hester NicEilidh On the surface, the English ballad The Death of Robin Hood , which probably dates in some form to the early 15th century, does not appear to make sense within the larger Robin Hood tradition. It seems perversely inappropriate that the Greenwood hero should die not battling the Sheriff's men in the forest, but rather by being bled to death in a nunnery by a treacherous relative. Many of the elements of the ballad are obscure. For instance, who is the old woman "banning" Robin by the river? What is her role? What is the basis of the enmity between Robin and the nun's lover, Roger? Why does Robin die weak and bedridden? The answers to these questions cannot be found solely within the Robin Hood legend itself. While not easily interpreted on its own, the meaning of the ballad of Robin Hood's death does become clearer when we see it as part of a wider cycle of myths that informed the British imagination of the late Middle Ages and Early Modern period. Chief among these stories must be the Christian mythos, which includes Biblical scripture, hagiography, hymns, folksongs, and apocryphal legend. The older pre-Christian mythology of the British isles, as preserved in the Irish myth cycles, can also provide an enlightening point of comparison, as does the Classical mythology that became well known during the Renaissance.

213 Euphemisms for Death and Dying Why would somebody do this? Why would I do this? Some people say that I have a morbid fascination with death, or that I am a sick person. They are probably right. Whenever I see a photo of a corpse (I love forensics) I always want to know how the person died, what happened to them... How does someone go from being a beautiful living creature to a twisted hunk of cold meat? A certain compassion is stirred within me... I compiled this list of euphemisms as part of a course on the sociology of dying and death. I know there are tons more out there... If you have one that you think is interesting, please send it to me, and I'll add it to the list and give credit where credit is due. a b c d ... p /q/ r s t u ... w /x/y/z a-b

Resources for Death and Dying Courses.
Professor Nan P. Chico.
California State University, Hayward.
In Brief: Who we are, and Why we are on the Web.
Who are we? My captive audience consists of students who are enrolled in my Death and Dying class, Soc 3419 . This is an upper-division course, with a maximum enrollment of 50 students per section, which fulfills either CSU Hayward's General Education "capstone course" (Area E) requirement or the Upper Division Social Sciences Continuation (Area D4) requirement, or which may be used as a Sociology elective by undergraduate or graduate majors. But I have also kept in mind others who I hope will drop by and stay for awhile: my former and future students; colleagues who teach about death, dying, loss, grief, socially constructed reality, social issues, critical thinking, and social psychology; and everyone else interested in the topics we cover in the course. Special Note: if you are experiencing grief over the death of someone you loved, or if you or a loved one are dealing with a life-threatening illness, you should think carefully before visiting those sites marked with this warning! Some topics (forensics, embalming, death as entertainment) might be too disturbing or painful for you at this emotionally vulnerable time.
Why
the Web? Because there is so much here that is useful and interesting, because I want my students to learn how to create their own Webbed materials for teaching and learning, and because it is really fun! As a sociologist from a symbolic interactionist perspective, I see it as a whole new domain of interaction to observe, shape, challenge, change, think about, and play in.

Death and Dying
Mindy Machanic
Many theorists have discussed the stages of dying, death, and grief. In general, the stages in the process of dying are culturally determined: how the patient and loved ones feel about an impending death and what they do or do not do to prepare for it or fight against it are in large part determined by the cultural meanings attached to the cause of death. A sudden death has different meanings for survivors than does a long, drawn-out death, and the death of a young person may have different meanings than the death of an older one both for the person dying and for those surviving. For those who see illness as punishment for bad deeds or bad thoughts or when illness is seen as a reflection on the larger family or social group, death and dying present additional layers of meaning. AIDS primarily strikes those in the midst of what should be healthy and productive years. Although there are long-term survivors of AIDS and advances have been made in the treatment of the disease, it is still widely considered terminal. Thus, those newly diagnosed as HIV-positive may feel as if they have received death sentences. Because AIDS often brings with it a social stigma, those who are diagnosed with it face not only the typical end-of-life issues surrounding the degenerative illnesses and impending death but also issues specific to social aspects of the disease. In addition, these issues also affect the grieving processes of their loved ones, who must face the impending decline and death of a partner, child, parent, or friend who has become a person with AIDS (PWA).

The New Physician

AMSA's Death and Dying Interest Group This Interest Group arose in response to medical students' concern that medical school leaves us inadequately prepared to communicate with terminally ill patients, as well as being poorly equipped emotionally to deal with matters of death and dying. This is important to us on a personal level as we face dying patients almost daily on the wards. On a professional level, we address important issues such as physician-assisted suicide and palliative care. In response to these needs, we as an interest group provide guidance, support and resources for students who wish to supplement their medical education in the area of death and dying. As co-coordinators, we act as facilitators for this learning, but the Interest Group needs your active participation to be successful!

We hope to make this listserve a forum for active discussion of issues and a way for students at different medical schools to work together on projects. We will jump-start the discussions by posting a question each month to generate conversations around issues of interest. We hope that you guys will not only participate in the discussions, but will also post questions or topics for your colleagues from around the country. Listserve Guidelines
Guide to Planning a Memorial Service
A planning guide for students and the cadaver's families as a way to honor the tremendous gift bestowed upon medical students yearly through local donation programs. Many schools already hold memorial services each year at the conclusion of the anatomy class, and Emily helped orchestrate such an event at the University of New Mexico this past fall. With the experiences we've all had through anatomy, this would be a fun project and can be a great resource for students at schools that do not currently hold memorial services for anatomy.
