Teri L. Mosier
Welcome to my online portfolio.
My name is Teri L. Mosier, I am a deaf lawyer living in Louisville, Kentucky. I provide general practice legal services, including securing the rights of people with disabilities. This is my personal web site and is not intended to be an advertisement. I was chosen as an At-Large Delegate for the next President of the United States, Al Gore. I attended the DNC conference in Los Angeles. Although I am not the first national deaf delegate, I appear to be the first democratic delegate from Kentucky. I was also a delegate to the National Stonewall Democratic Federation Convention in Palm Springs, immediately preceding the DNC. I am hoping to attend the Creating Change workshop in Atlanta.
Read about the DNCC Convention here: Top Eleven Observations at the DNC As widely reported online and in the media , deaf folks like myself had problems with DNCC on the first day. Not so widely reported was that after we began advocating for ourselves and our needs we received personal interpreters for the rest of the convention. Would a deaf caucus inside the party prevent such problems? Would you join? Post your thoughts in our deaf related forum.

Hearing Aids
On this page:
What is a hearing aid?
A hearing aid is an electronic, battery-operated device that amplifies and changes sound to allow for improved communication. Hearing aids receive sound through a microphone, which then converts the sound waves to electrical signals. The amplifier increases the loudness of the signals and then sends the sound to the ear through a speaker. Top
How common is hearing loss and what causes it?
Approximately 28 million Americans have a hearing impairment. Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent chronic health conditions in the United States, affecting people of all ages, in all segments of the population, and across all socioeconomic levels. Hearing loss affects approximately 17 in 1,000 children under age 18. Incidence increases with age: approximately 314 in 1,000 people over age 65 have hearing loss. Hearing loss can be hereditary, or it can result from disease, trauma, or long-term exposure to damaging noise or medications. Hearing loss can vary from a mild but important loss of sensitivity, to a total loss of hearing.

Helpful Hints for Communicating with the Hard of Hearing
  • Accept reality. It impacts on their lives, and introduces different elements into your relationship. It isn't going to go away. Reconcile yourself to the fact of their hearing loss. It doesn't change who they are.
  • Speak slowly. Consider your own confusion when you listen to a newscaster on television who rushes through lines, especially when statistics are being quoted.
  • Don't shout. It doesn't help, and it may give the impression that you are angry! Learn to speak distinctly. Careful enunciation is a useful habit to cultivate anyway!
  • Remember that they will have trouble hearing when there is background noise.
  • Don't talk with your back to people with hearing loss. Even if they can't read your lips accurately when you face them, they will get a better sense of what you are saying! Also, if you have a moustache, please trim it so that it does not cover your lips. They NEED to see your lips clearly to lipread accurately
  • Don't start walking away while you are still talking. Your words will come out as gibberish.
