The Council is charged with research as well as advisory functions in official Danish language planning. Its three main tasks are:
    • to answer questions about Danish language usage
    • to produce the official orthographical dictionary of Danish
    • to chart the development of Danish, notably by collecting examples of new words and word usage.
In addition to its work at national level, the Council cooperates closely with the other Nordic language councils. The Information Service
The Danish Language Council is required to answer questions concerning Danish linguistic usage. Anybody who turns to the Council will get an answer. This service is free of charge.
The majority of the questions concern correct usage in spelling, word-formation, inflection, and syntax. Other questions are about new words in Danish, their spelling, pronunciation, and meaning. Another group of enquiries deal with etymology or with specialist terminology. There are also questions of interpretation: the Council is requested to interpret laws, contracts, etc. - and even to give its views in connection with libel suits.
The information service is used extensively by private business, e.g. advertising agencies, as well as public services and institutions, including translators working in the various bodies of the European Communities. And there are also numerous private citizens who turn to the Language Council for advice.

    Danish culture and language
Denmark was settled already 10,000 years ago, when the ice retreated from Scandinavia. Danes descend from various Germanic tribes, including the Jutes and Angles who settled England in the 5th century. There is a small German minority living in southern Jutland and a Danish minority living in North Germany. Danish is a Germanic language of the Nordic branch, mutually intelligible (with some practice) with Norwegian and Swedish. The kingdom of Denmark includes also the autonomous areas of Greenland (area: 2.2 mill. km², pop. 53,000) and Faroe Islands (area: 1,400 km², pop. 48,000). The inhabitants speak a language (Faroese) resembling Icelandic and some Western Norwegian dialects. Eskimos speaking Greenlandic (a language based on a mid-19th century creation of a single literary language out of many Inuit dialects) form the largest group of Greenlanders; the inhabitants of Faroe Islands descend from the Viking settlers who arrived in the 9th century and the Irish monks and slaves who also made it to the Island. As can be expected Danish culture could be called more Central European in character than that of other Nordic countries. Particularly it could be noted that mentality and

Introduction Danish is spoken by the 5 million inhabitants of Denmark, and is also the official language of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are considered part of Denmark. It is one of the Scandinavian languages, which constitute a branch of the Germanic languages, in turn a part of the Indo-European family. Danish is most closely related to Norwegian and Swedish. During the centuries that Denmark and Norway were one country, a dialect closer to Danish than Norwegian was spoken in the Norwegian cities. This is still in use today and is sometimes referred to as "Dano-Norwegian." The Danish alphabet is the same as the Norwegian, consisting of the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet plus

Danish language Danish language, member of the North Germanic, or Scandinavian, group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages. The official language of Denmark, it is spoken by over 5 million people, most of whom live in Denmark; however, there are some Danish speakers in Greenland, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, and the United States. Like the other Scandinavian languages, Danish is derived from Old Norse, and by the first half of the 12th cent. it could be distinguished from the parent tongue (see Germanic languages Norse ). Between 1100 and 1800 a number of phonological changes took place in Danish, and the grammar became increasingly simple. The spelling and pronunciation of the language began to be standardized c.1700, and a modern standard Danish can be said to have existed since about 1800, although there are still a number of dialects. Danish grammar is comparatively simple. The noun is inflected only to show the possessive and plural forms and has but two genders, neuter and nonneuter (or common). The meaning of nouns that are otherwise the same can depend on gender. For example, when used in the nonneuter or glottal stop, which is a sound that results from the closing and opening of the glottis to expel air. Verbs have no personal inflection. Although the vocabulary of Danish is substantially native, many words have been borrowed from other languages, notably from Low German in the 14th to 16th cent.; from High German, Latin, and French in the 16th to 19th cent.; and from English since the late 19th cent. Because of the large number of similar and identical words in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish, a knowledge of any one of these languages makes it possible to understand the spoken and written forms of the other two. Since c.1100, Danish has used the Roman alphabet, to which three symbols representing three vowels

The Danish Beekeepers´ Association The Danish Beekeepers´Association (Danmarks Biavlerforening) was founded on 5th July 1866. The preamble stated that the aim of the organization was to work for the benefit of beekeeping and especially to introduce the beekeeping method developed by Dzierzon. Right from the beginning much effort was put into informing the public and educating beekeepers. The Danish Bee Journal (Tidsskrift for Biavl) has been published since the very beginning of the organization. Much effort was devoted to advisory work too. Actually, the founder of the organization widely travelled as a beekeeping teacher in Denmark. Things have changed. But the Danish Beekeepers´ Associations have almost retained the same organization as in the early days. Although the sentence in the preamble about Dzierzons method has been taken out, we still aim at working in the member beekeepers interests. The organization is a Federation consisting of 82 local beekeepers´ associations spread all over Denmark. Representatives of the local associations elects the president and six other members of the executive body. The president now is Mr.Verner Schou.. The executive body elects the Vice-president and appoints the General Secretary. ( At present Mr. Asger Søgaard Jørgensen) who works with the advisory service as well.

    Danish (Dansk)
Danish is a North Germanic language with around 5.5 million speakers in Denmark, the Faeroe Islands and Greenland. Danish is also spoken by about 20,000 people in Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. Danish was the official language of Norway until about 1830 and of Iceland until 1944. Danish is now the first foreign language learnt in Iceland. During the Middle Ages, Danish was heavily influenced by Low German dialects, while during the 17th century Danish absorbed many French loanwords and from the 19th century onwards, many English words have been taken into Danish. The first known written language of Scandinavia was Old Norse or the (Danish tongue), which appeared in Runic inscriptions from about 700 AD onwards. Between 800 and 1050 AD a division began to appear between East Norse, which developed into Swedish and Danish, and West Norse, which developed into Norwegian, Faroese and Icelandic. Viking colonisation spread the East Norse dialects to northern England during the 8th and 9th centuries. After 878, England north of a line between Chester and the Thames came under Danish rule and was known as the 'Danelaw'. By 1016, the whole of England and Scotland were under the rule of the Danish King Cnut (Canute), who reined until 1035.

    About the Danish Language
Danish (Dansk) is the official language of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. It is spoken by more than 5 million people in Denmark and in a few communities south of the German border.
Danish is a member of the Indo-European language family. Along with Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, Danish is part of the Northern Germanic branch that comprises the Scandinavian languages. Danish began to separate from the other Scandinavian languages about 1000 A.D., and it is clearly the language that has diverged the furthest from Old Norse the ancestor of the modern Scandinavian languages.
During the Middle Ages, Danish lost the old case system, merged the masculine and feminine genders into a single common one, and acquired many Low German words, prefixes, and suffixes from contact with the traders of the Hanseatic League. The oldest Danish records are runic inscriptions (from 250-800 A.D.) found in sites ranging from Jutland to southern Sweden.
Even though small in territory and population, Denmark has played a notable role in European history. The Danish crown dominated northwestern Europe for the duration of the Middle Ages. This fact can be traced by the stamp that Danish left on the languages of Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.
