University College of Dance PROGRAMME IN DANCE THERAPY (DANSTERAPEUTUTBILDNINGEN) (65 Swedish credit points) The course is a continuous three-year course run on a halftime basis. Course Philosophy The base of dance therapy is the healing factor of the creative process in dance, emphasising
that a change in posture and movement repertoire may also produce a change in personality.
That is why the students' own personal development in dance and movement is of utmost importance in the Programme in Dance Therapy. In acknowledging that dance therapist still is a new profession in Sweden we attempt to give the students therapeutic knowledge equal to what is common in established psychodynamic therapy education. Knowledge in psychology, psychopathology and psychotherapy thus is on a high level with frequent written assignments.
Aims The graduate diploma course in Dance Therapy aims at developing the students' knowledge and skills for applying dance to therapeutic work. The course aims at providing a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of dance therapy as in therapeutic issues in general with special knowledge about diagnosis and psychopathology. Focus is on strengthen the students reflecting ability both on his own dancing and on how to use the dance in therapy within the clinical work. Course content A variety of approaches to dance therapy are critically reviewed and evaluated. Introductions are given in other art therapies. The theoretical therapeutic knowledge is learnt by a combination of lectures, seminars and self-studies. A problem solving approach is used. Finally the student is supposed to integrate his knowledge of therapy, theories and personal development in his clinical work, shown in a written case study. Students also have to write a thesis on a Dance Therapy related theme.

    Dance Therapy
Observing movement and body language is often a good indicator of someone's emotional state. Using dance therapy, people are encouraged to express themselves confidently in a non-verbal way, responding naturally and spontaneously to rhythm. This helps them connect with their subconscious to establish stronger personal identities in an atmosphere of mutual trust. Dance therapy is often used in conjunction with physiotherapy or occupational therapy, and has been proved highly effective and popular in schools, prisons and institutions.
    History
Dance therapy was developed in the United States in the 1940s and is beneficial to everyone, but especially to those with mental and physical disabilities, or victims of abuse, who find it difficult to articulate.
    What to Expect
Dance therapy can be conducted on an individual basis on in a group, usually in a series of classes. Participants will first warm up before embarking on whatever physical action the music or rhythm suggests. The emphasis is on people 'doing their own thing', playacting, 'mirroring', or supporting others. The action is generally playful and unchoreographed, but some basic dance steps might be taught. Cloths, beanbags, balls and miscellaneous objects may be used. Dancing makes us feel good, and this natural, instinctive form of exercise can be harnessed to help us express our deepest feelings.

Understanding Ourselves Through Movement By Sharifa
It is my hope that I can guide you on a path to explore how your own needs have been met through the dance; and if you are a teacher, discover how you can assist others to reconnect with lost or unexplored, parts of the self.
I cannot think of a better way to start except to pose to you the question, "What attracts people to the dance, in the first place?"
    Answers often are:
"I want to surprise my boyfriend, husband."
"I want to look, dance, or act sexier."
"I need more exercise, to lose weight." ...and so on. If you look beyond the superficial answers, the first thing you see is that many people do not accept themselves as they are. Many dancers, especially, suffer from low self-esteem and are looking for some way to transform themselves into a sexier, thinner, more self-confidant, more feminine version. Others go into the dance with a healthier self-esteem and want to add to their talents.

Eva Lidor, administrator, Buckner Ryburn Nursing Center Art Therapy Music Therapy Dance Therapy Expressive Therapy :: Dance Therapy WHAT IS DANCE/MOVEMENT THERAPY? Dance/movement therapy, a creative art therapy, is rooted in the expressive nature of dance itself. Dance is the most fundamental of the arts, involving a direct expression and experience of oneself through the body. It is a basic form of authentic communication, and as such it is an especially effective medium for therapy. Based in the belief that the body, the mind and the spirit are interconnected, dance/movement therapy is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional, cognitive, social and physical integration of the individual." Wesley Institute's Graduate Diploma in Dance Therapy RATIONALE:
The use of the arts in therapeutic settings is a growing and dynamic field in Australia. The health and social science professions are gradually acknowledging the value of the arts in healing, personal development, and growth in body, mind and spirit. The expressive outlet of dance and movement is immensely beneficial to all population groups. Dance therapy is a form of treatment in which the therapist utilises dance and movement as the primary means for accomplishing therapeutic goals. When used in conjunction with the services of other health disciplines, e.g. psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing, dance therapy can empower clients to move towards a higher quality of life.
