    Dance therapy for mental patients
    By Melissa Jackson
BBC News Online health staff Dancing may be a way to tone the body, but it is also a dynamic way to exercise the mind, say health experts. An ambitious project has been launched to use the power of dance to improve the lives of people with mental illness to help them. The Reach4Dance initiative will target patients with long-term mental health problems. Dance and movement are known to have physical and psychological benefits for those with mental illness. A recent study by academic Sarah Cook, who has personal experience of mental health problems, shows dance is a powerful therapeutic tool. As a student, she ended up in hospital for several months after becoming suicidally depressed. She discovered dance more than 10 years ago and has since used it as a way of dealing with grief, sorrow and other "stress-producing" emotions, quite literally dancing them out of her system. Dance is a way of dealing with feelings and releasing them, instead of locking them in and going to the doctor with depression and anxiety

Heckman watches. And when the session is complete, she discusses what she observed.
"Feelings come up grief, anger, loss, shame," says Heckman, MA Ed., a registered dance therapist (ADTR) in private practice in St. Louis. "When you start to move the body ... the feelings get activated, too."
For centuries, dance has been recognized as a means of expressing oneself, celebrating life, or performing ritualistic healing. Now, dance is increasingly accepted as a way to help work through one's problems. Whether someone is suffering from sexual abuse or bulimia, breast cancer or depression, advocates say dance therapy can help people gain insight into their behavior, improve their self-esteem, and provide options for coping.
"Movement is a healing force," says Vivien Marcow Speiser, PhD, ADTR, a dance therapy professor and chairwoman of the Institute for Body, Mind and Spirituality at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. "Everybody knows that when you move, you feel better. That's why so many people exercise and take care of their bodies."

The shy, quiet 13-year-old boy just wouldn't let go of Kathy Hinchman's hand. It was his first day at her dance class for special-needs children, and the Sterling Heights teen-ager wasn't sure he wanted to dance, especially in front of others. Physically impaired, he was aware of his appearance and wouldn't leave Hinchman's side early on in the 8-week dance session. The boy also had limited short-term memory, but remembered his teacher every week thanks to a photograph his mom took at their first meeting.
"He just tugged at my heart," Hinchman said.
