Dance Therapy?
The use of dance as a therapeutic tool is founded in the idea that body and mind are completely integrated. While the relationship between the mind and body is constantly being explored, theorised and discussed, the whole area certainly highlights the ingenuity of the creation and masterpiece in the human being.
The theory underlying dance therapy is that body movement reflects the inner state of the human, and that by moving the body within a guided therapeutic setting, a healing process begins. Emerging inner conflicts and issues from the unconscious to the consciousness of the person are addressed on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Seeking the full integration of mind and body, and bringing harmony between all the aforementioned levels of the human being is what dance therapy is all about.

Dance therapy
What Is It?
Dance therapy (also called dance/movement therapy) is the use of choreographed or improvised movement as a way of treating social, emotional, cognitive, and physical problems. Throughout the ages, people of many cultures have used dance to express powerful emotions, tell stories, treat illness, celebrate important events, and maintain communal bonds. Dance therapy harnesses this power of movement in a therapeutic setting and uses it to promote personal growth, health, and well-being. Dance as therapy came into existence as a marriage of sorts between modern dance and psychiatry. Its was pioneered by Marian Chace (1896-1970), who studied dance in New York City before establishing her own studio in Washington, DC, in the 1930s. Because Chase's dance classes provided unique opportunities for self-expression, communication, and group interaction, psychiatrists in Washington began sending patients to her.

    SECASA dance therapy program
By Sue Mullane and Sarah McGregor
Over the last five years we have been developing a model for a creative dance therapy program. The journey began in 1997 with a small group of women who bravely began a six week, trial movement exploration. This group began following the receipt of funding support through AUSDANCE The focus of this small group was on dance, the women explored a range of movements, with a particular emphasis on individual movements. The group explored dance with attention to physical support, direction, and flow. Inspired by the women's responses to the trial program we began to further explore ways of bringing together dance therapy and sexual assault group work. What emerged from this was the ten week moving on group. In this group program we followed traditional feminist sexual assault group process by allowing the women to set the agenda or themes for exploration over the ten weeks. Both feedback from the women during these programs and our observations alerted us to the need for further time to dwell on each theme. In response to this request we developed the focus days, which enabled us the luxury of a full day to explore a theme. In the year 2000 SECASA conducted a series of one day dance therapy workshops with the financial support of the Victims Referral and Assistance Program. The focus day workshops were intensive workshops offering women the opportunity to explore one specific theme or "life issue" in a mannor which allowed for a more detailed exploration. Activities incorporated a creative arts exploration of the topic, and used dance/expressive movement as the primary means for exploration.

It was not until 1966, when the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) was founded, that dance therapy gained professional recognition. Today the ADTA has nearly 1,200 members in 46 states and 20 countries around the world.

Dance Therapy - Healing Through Freedom
    by Renie Burghardt
Dancing goes back to primitive times, and magical powers have been attributed to it. When a witch doctor dances, it is to exorcise evil spirits from the sick person. I read that during the Middle Ages people even danced to avoid the plague. The Tarantella of Italy is believed to have originated after a poisonous spider’s bite caused tarantism, and the cure for it was a jumping dance. Today’s dance therapy evolved from the age-old idea that dancing has the power to cure. These days, dance therapists are mental health professionals, who treat problems such as neurosis, psychosis, and even alcoholism with the dance. Dancing is a primal response to rhythm and music, so the dance therapist uses dancer’s techniques to put the patient in touch with himself. A psychiatrist, of course, talks a patient through his problems, while a dance therapist uses the non-verbal, movement oriented techniques. In dance therapy, the patient is made aware of his feelings through sensation and movement. Emotional problems and conflicts become concrete this way, they say. By integrating body and mind, the goal of dance therapy is to build the self-esteem and self-identity of an emotionally ill person.

Dance movement therapy is the use of creative movement and dance in a therapeutic alliance. It uses the relationship between motion and emotion as a vehicle through which an individual can engage in personal integration towards a clearer definition of self. During the last 10 years, dance movement therapy, along with the other arts therapies, has consolidated as a separate and valid therapy in health, education and the voluntary and social services.

Feldenkrais works on self-image as well as posture and suppleness and increases overall health and vitality. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904 -1984), an engineer and physicist , created this method while seeking to heal himself from an old knee injury. This bodywork is based on the interrelation of Structure/Function : that is to say the way we use our body affect its structure and the structure in turn affect functions. While other therapies mainly based on soft tissue manipulation work on Structure to balance the body/mind unity, Feldenkrais works on Function (movement, perception and awareness) to enhance health, well-being and treat disease.

Home Page Prana-Therapy Chromotherapy Hypnosis Dance-Therapy Clay-Therapy Phitotherapy Temple of Humankind The birth Dance therapy In the general context of spiritual healing, we offer a specialization in dance as support to other therapeutic interventions. Damanhur's own dance-therapy is based on a specific sequence of movements that allow a profound contact with the inner self. This dance is called Sacred because it is the transposition into movement of the archetypal ideograms of the Sacred Language, an ancient language that can be expressed with sound, signs and movement. Sacred Dance is composed of 122 principal poly -semantic figures. The combinations of movements have a precise correspondence inside each human being: the body is used as an instrument of inner knowledge and expression is carried out through all the senses, involving the whole of the human being. Each position has a different proportional weight in the sequence of movements and takes on a different meaning according to the way the gesture is performed. How you trace the space with your body offers the possibility of expressing internally, through dance, an endless range of meanings. Dancing to music helps the dancer to contact inner and vital rhythms. Through gesture and signing it is possible to express the rhythm externally in the form of movement. You learn to move respecting the needs and the limitations of your own body in a gradual and harmonious way. You learn how to acquire the mastery of every gesture, to express in a free and spontaneous way what it is sometimes difficult to express in words.
