Teach Us to Dance to the
Rhythm of Africa By Hannelie Booyens
January 16, 2004 It's difficult to imagine a more challenging journey than the one Ginn Fourie faces. She is a senior lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Cape Town. After Lyndi's death she focused on a new direction of study: Reconciliation in SA for a doctoral thesis. For many of her white compatriots it's a journey into the heart of darkest Africa - a place where the chant "kill the boer, kill the farmer'' still inspires fear. How can you possibly travel alone to the seat of the military wing of the Pan Africanist Congress, to the place where the man who gave the order to kill your daughter, is to be honoured by his people? That's the question Ginn's been asked countless times. It's like going into Dingaan's kraal, a somewhat conservative relative warned her. All sorts of emotions surface as Ginn drives through Limpopo Province's lush bushveld, a map on her lap. She's hunting for Seleteng, a rural community near Mokopane (Potgietersrus). She's excited, curious, moved and happy. "And worried that the gift of fruit in the boot is going to vrot (decay) before we get there,'' she chuckles.

Fighting To Teach After 26 years in the business, Robin Dawn Ryan knows what it takes to survive and how to have fun doing it. By Sara Jarrett Issue: November 2000
    Robin Dawn Ryan
At age 18, after being a member of the Sarasota Sailors Circus, Ryan decided to go to community college where she got a partial tuition scholarship. Thanks to a strong background in dance, as well as gymnastics, she began coaching while attending school. When parents started to ask her to choreograph and teach their children outside of regular lessons, Ryan decided it was time to branch out on her own. With the help of her mother, she rented a small studio space for $200 a month.

    http://www.dancematrix.com/disclosure/content.asp
disclosure The vulnerability of children is a sad fact in today’s society yet something positive is now being done about it. Last year, new provisions were introduced requiring school teachers to undergo criminal record checks. In the case of Dance Schools, criminal record checks can be carried out on Teachers, Teaching Assistants (including helpers) and Student Teachers who: "care for, train, supervise or are in sole charge of children". In respect of the term 'children’ this refers to persons up to the age of 18 years. Such criminal record checks are not compulsory, in that the law does not make it mandatory for the checks to be carried out. However there are three specific scenarios that, either separately or together, are likely to make Dance Schools give criminal record checks positive consideration:
    Local Authority Requirements
There have already been instances where some Local Authorities have made the use of Local Authority premises, such as function rooms or school premises, conditional upon the Dance School or Teacher providing Disclosure Certificates for themselves and their staff. Similarly, Churches and other bodies, such as the YMCA, that allow Dance Schools to hire Church Halls or other premises for dance classes may soon be following suit.

The perfect early starter dance program
Our developmentally based curricula encourage children to express themselves creatively and become comfortable with moving their bodies to music. Parents participate in the classes, so they see firsthand how music and dance help their children develop physically, socially, cognitively, and emotionally. How Kindermusik works for dance studios There are various ways to incorporate Kindermusik into your studio program. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
    • Invite a local Kindermusik educator to offer her program in your studio. She can manage all aspects of the class, from teaching to collecting payments. Renting studio space during down times can generate welcome revenue. You might even offer a reduced rate in exchange for publicizing your dance classes. Identify a staff member with a love of music and children and offer to pay for her training to become a trained, licensed Kindermusik educator. You would maintain her as an employee and all tuition and fees collected for her Kindermusik classes would be paid to the studio. For more information, click

    115. Books On Ballroom Dancing
The beginning chapters that deal with general points of teaching dance are especially useful, while the later chapters on specific dances have outdated material
    http://www.utdallas.edu/~aria/dance/dance_books.html
    Books on Ballroom Dancing
    About this list
This list contains books on or about ballroom dancing, including Latin American dacnes, Swing, and the so-called nightclub dances such as the Hustle. This list includes books on dancing that, for the most part, appeared after 1970. While this cutoff date may seem somewhat arbitrary, it means that most of these books are either still in print, or can be found in major libraries. Social dancing changes with time; older books on dancing are of interest mainly to the historian and not to the practitioner of dancing. Moreover, the dancing boom of the 50's and 60's led to the production of a great many forgettable low-budget paperbacks, whose authors were neither competent dancers nor teachers. If you are interested in a comprehensive list of older books, I recommend searching the library of congress catalogues A few older books do appear in this list. They either have exceptional historical value, such as the book written by the Castles and another by Arthur Murray, or are unique in some way and assumed to have some redeeming value. It combines dance, theater, improvisation and influences of Japanese traditional performing arts with German Expressionist dance (Neue Tanz) and performance art to create a unique performing art form that is both controversial and universal in its expression. It has evolved to become an international art form with artists and groups devoted to teaching and performing it in East and South-East Asia, North and South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
