International Folk Dance in Canberra, Australia

The relationship between people and their dance communities is a complex one. In this article I will look at the nature of international folk dance in Canberra. International folk dance is the name generally given where the specific dances cross several cultural styles or regions. In a given group, repertoire will typically come from a least a half dozen countries and there will be a strong emphasis on line and circle dances. Most participants are not there to seek partners, which differentiates it from some other social dance forms. International folk dance is popular in North America and Western Europe as well as in Australia and New Zealand. Despite its popularity, International Folk Dancing as a phenomenon has not been studied in Australia at all. Yet ethnic communities in Australia seek out "international": dancers to perform for them where they lack their own dance groups and major gatherings such as the National Folk Festival rely upon these groups for organisation, teaching, dance performance, and even announcing tasks. Obviously international folk dance plays an important role in the folklife of Australia, and equally obviously this role has been neglected in the scholarship on folk dance .

Miles from Nowhere: Teaching Dance in Prison By Leslie Neal Every week I take the same journey. I travel north past farmlands and zinc fields, toll booths and baby palm trees, industrial cranes and great blue herons, and ticky-tacky subdivisions that all look the same and share swampy Everglades backyards. It's desolate and progressive all at once. A constantly changing, razed landscape that is distinctly South Florida. Strange metaphoric images aren't unusual along this one-way street. I see eagles, owls and osprey lined up on black wires. Once a walking catfish crossed the road. Occasionally, the sight of turtles sunning on the yellow line causes me to stop the car and move them to the safety of the edge. Once a red rolling feather blew by. The air is always filled with the alien call of black crows mixed with mourning doves and sporadic splashes of fish in the lily ponds.

Liaisons The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) is an autonomous non-profit organization dedicated to promoting standards of excellence in dance education by providing the dance artist and the dance educator a network of resources and support, a base for advocacy, and access to programs and projects that focus on the importance of dance in the human experience. The goals of NDEO are to: 1) promote dance as an artistic process which broadens and depends human experience; 2) strengthen the national voice in articulating and implementing a vision for dance education; and 3) weave dance into the complete fabric of learning. The NDEO works to advance knowledge in the field of dance education, encourages research and practical application, and promotes quality instruction in dance arts education conducted by qualified teachers of dance. Evolution of the Field Dance found its first home in K-12 and higher education in physical education programs. The first dance major was approved in the Women's Physical Education Department at the University of Wisconsin/Madison in 1926. Until the 1970s, most school and university dance programs continued to be affiliated with girl's and women's physical education. However, as a result of the development of the field, Title IX (1972), and the Equal Educational Opportunity Act (1974), men's and women's physical education merged into coeducational programs that focused on sports. Simultaneously, artists/professionals were encouraged to attend institutions of higher learning and teach in schools. All this resulted in a corresponding realignment of dance into the fine and performing arts. Over time, dance has further defined itself as arts related, while physical education has become more specialized in the areas of athletics and sports science.

There are many reasons for teaching dance most people teach because they truly love the art and want to share this knowledge; teaching also is a way to
http://www.tribalwhere.com/belly_dance/classtrt.html
Starting To Teach The Basics There are those incredible performers who make poor teachers, just as there are some excellent teachers who are not the best performers in the genre. This is because the two arts, though not mutually exclusive, are Before taking the big step, there are several points to consider:
  • Are you really ready? Location Class Plan Fees Promotion The first Night And the other nights after... Costuming
  • Are You Really Ready? I once taught an 8-week Beginning Level I class in another city. There was a woman attending who was unable to complete the beginning course; she told me she found the material too difficult. I was dismayed to learn later that this same woman was a teacher in this town. I wondered how she could be teaching if she was unable to complete course materials that were the very underpinnings of the art. Obviously many people want to teach, but each person must assess their reasons carefully and also must honestly examine their skill levels before taking that big step. If you as a dancer have not completed an extensive course of study, if you have not taken time to learn a style completely, than you might need to wait before teaching. A person who is totally committed to teaching has probably not only studied one style devotedly, but has some exposure to the various styles of bellydance. I find that most quality teachers are not only well-versed in their specific style, but have extensive training and knowledge of several styles of bellydance, extensive experience with folkloric or folk dance, and are immersed in researching and studying the diverse cultures found throughout the Near and Middle East, as well as studying a number of cultures, dances and people of North Africa, and the eastern European nations. It just seems to happen as they discover the interconnectedness of dance throughout these regions.

In association with the UNM dance Program, BEDCO offers a special summer intensive for Albuquerque area classroom teachers wishing to teach the curriculum
    http://www.swcp.com/abqarts/educators/organizations/dance_bill_evans.htm
Our mission is twofold, including both dance performance and dance education.
Performance: BEDCO is the primary vehicle for the creation and dissemination of new modern dance works by Bill Evans, who has been recognized as a major international choreographer since the mid-70's, when he received the first of numerous choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Fellowship and numerous other awards. BEDCO produces several concerts of modern dance and/or rhythm tap dance in Albuquerque and other New Mexico communities annually.
Education: BEDCO is also the primary vehicle for the dissemination of the Evans Modern Dance Technique, which integrates dance science, somatics and Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis. The annual Bill Evans Summer Institutes of Dance attracts professional dance teachers and aspiring professional performers from throughout the U. S., Canada, Mexico and elsewhere to study with Evans and other company members. The company will also share this work with the Albuquerque community through the Jewish Community Center beginning in October, 2000.

    A Competent Teacher
By Ne-Kajira Jannan of " Tribal Where?
"One of the hardest areas for enforcing ethics is in the teaching field because we have, to date, no standardized foundation vocabulary, no established professional standard, and no standard categorization of the various styles and forms of this art form, complete with a certification program.
This is a double-edged sword: on one hand, this ensures that no single group can monopolize the dance or control the creative process, but on the other hand, it also means that students can often fall into the hands of ill-trained, unscrupulous people posing as teachers. I suspect it will take many years yet until the situation is resolved.
In the meantime, the dance community must police itself; we must take on the responsibility of offering incoming and current students a variety of "signposts" with which to identify qualified, competent teachers from bad. This is difficult because the various styles take different approached to performance and training, to execution of a movement... however , there are standard areas of knowledge a teacher should have, and standard practices. If you are looking for a qualified instructor, I suggest the following:

    THE DANCE PROGRAM
    Mission
The mission of the dance program at The University of Southern Mississippi is to prepare students for both professional and scholastic careers in the arts. The program is based on the philosophy that dance is more than a physical actit is a state of mind-an attitude in which body and mind is balanced. The diversity of ideas, visual images and formal techniques that have evolved through the historical development of dance are the ingredients that make up the whole of dance as a performing art. It is to these ingredients that the dance program addresses its courses and activities in order to guide the student toward a balanced understanding of the art. The Southern Miss dance major program was the first program in Mississippi to offer the professional B.F.A. degree in dance. It is the only program in the five-state region that offers a dance education K-12 emphasis and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), which is recognized by the United States Department of Education.
