Camp
Dance Troupe Welcome to Utamaduni, Denmark.
Friendship and cultural exchange with Tanzania, Africa. The name "Utamaduni", a swahili word meaning "culture", was adopted by the dance troupe after a Danish cultural exchange with the Sukuma tribe in Tanzania in 1977. The exchange project in which the Danes also performed their traditional dance, was called "Daraja la Utamaduni" / "The cultural bridge". From that embryonic beginning of cultural exchange, rich and fertile images of African culture were absorbed by the "Danes" - all thanks to the Sukuma people. Since then Utamaduni has woven a tapestry of dance, drum, and song rhythms into a bond of friendship with local farmers and handicraft artists, and has inspired more than 25 Danish dance troupes that meet weekly for dance and workshops. Every year we arrange a gathering for people with interest in african culture, music and dance. We are 4-500 people who meet in the forest of Ramten Skov every year in week number 30, since 17 years now! The Utamaduni Dance Troupe brings alive Africa, right here on the spot, with its colorful and expressive performance.

Ragtime Dance
At the end of the nineteenth century, the growing influence of a new kind of popular music substantially changed the nature of dance. Ragtime had become a popular American style of music, chiefly composed for the piano, that flourished between 1890 and World War I. The sparkling and intoxicating rhythms of ragtime, with music by composers such as Scott Joplin, ushered in an era of expressive ballroom dancing, with dances that did not need formal training but which encouraged individualism. The first of these, the cakewalka strutting dance of African-American originswith its imagined scandalous rhythms, was never performed by middle and upper class ballroom dancers in its original, vibrantly competitive form. Yet it did find its way into the stately quadrille and was, therefore, performed in some variation by a new generation of dancers. La danse.

Western Social Dance: An Overview of the Collection
For centuries, in Europe and wherever Europeans have settled, the ballroom was the perfect setting for men and women to demonstrate their dancing abilities, to show their awareness of the latest fashions, and to display their mastery of polite behaviorqualities required for acceptance in society. The importance of dance and appropriate conduct was echoed in manuals that date back to the early Renaissance, to a time when courtiers, gentry, and wealthy citizens were fortunate enough to have a private dancing master or to have taken advantage of the skills of itinerant masters who traveled from one court to another. The grandeur of the Baroque court of King Louis XIV and his court at the Palace of Versailles set the stage for a new style of dance that would spread to royal courts throughout Europe. With the development of a dance notation system, published in 1700 by dancing master Raoul-Auger Feuillet, French court dance could be taught in every palace and manor house. By the end of the eighteenth century, when ideals of democracy swept through nations, group dances gained popularity, so dance instruction manuals, as well as etiquette books, were published to enlighten a growing middle class of Europeans and European colonists, especially those in the Americas. Description: A young dancer is made a star by the world's foremost dance impresario, but she must choose between her art and the man she loves. The film builds on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale of the same name.
Benefits: "The Red Shoes" describes the process by which a ballet is made, highlighting the need for creativity and collaboration among a group of artists. The movie also shows: (1) the glamorous but insular world of a prima ballerina in the first half of the twentieth century; (2) the role of the impresario in the creation of a new ballet and the operation of a ballet company; and (3) the melding of different art forms (music, dance and set design) required for a world class ballet company. In conjunction with The Turning Point "The Red Shoes" illustrates the progressively more stringent technical/athletic standards required of dancers during the twentieth century.
