    About Dance Access
Dance Access is a team comprised of eight teaching artists, five of whom are disabled, led by Program Director Alisa Rasera. The program was created in direct response to community demand. We believe that providing dance opportunities to all people enriches the entire community. To our knowledge, Dance Access is the only ongoing, comprehensive program of physically integrated dance education in Northern California and one of only a few programs nationally.
    WHAT WE DO?
    • Present performances and education/outreach events for youth and adults of all abilities.
    • Promote a model of physical integration through integrated teaching teams and class composition.
    • Provide consultation in a wide variety of arts, educational, health and community settings.
    • AXIS programs have received support from the NEA, the California Arts Council, the City of Oakland and numerous private foundations.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS: School Assemblies/KIDS Performances AXIS in-school assemblies and performances provide K-12 students the exciting experience of participating as an audience member of a live AXIS performance within a familiar setting. AXIS dancers showcase artistic repertory, provide educational information on disability, personal dance history, and include the audience in a physically integrated dance experience. Programs typically last 35-45 minutes. AXIS dancers also provide 45-minute creative dance workshops for 20-30 students for an additional fee.

Golden coins shimmered and softly tinkled like dreams running through Aladdin's fingertips. Veils fluttered through the air, cutting soft swooshes with the shoosh of flying carpets passing overhead.
Gold bangles, bracelets and anklets glimmered like minarets graced at dawn by a Byzantine sun. Long-flowing gauzy skits and shawls dark as charcoal, green as paradise's vines, redder and more mysterious than rubies filled the air as dancers swept and twirled about the floor.
And everywhere in a room full of Middle Eastern dancing students there was hint of flesh as innocent yet as tempting as Eden.
Gold bangles, bracelets and anklets glimmered like minarets graced at dawn by a Byzantine sun.
Middle Eastern dance is better known, to the chagrin of its devoted practioners, as belly dancing. The latter term carries taints of salaciousness which undermines the art.
And an art it is that demands not just undulating one's belly in a sea-like rhythm but also in gracefully moving one's hands, fingers and arms like willow branches in a Levantine breeze. Students dedicate hours to learning delicate hand movements or stylistic turns of the head, even haunting motions of their eyes, all in synchronization.

Students will learn about the mythological 12-hour journey of the sun god Re, and will explore an online Smithsonian Museum exhibit on the subject. The students will physically review locomotor and non-locomotor movements, and the different qualities of movement. Working individually and in groups, the students will choreograph a movement that represents one of the hours in Re's journey.

Dancing the Everyday
By Karl Schaffer, Erik Stern, and Scott Kim
If you haven't studied or taught dance, these tips will help you get started.
Try this!
For a good dance warm-up, incorporate a movement that students are familiar with. Everyday movements like shaking hands are a great way to involve non-dancers in doing and creating movement sequences. The gesture of shaking hands is familiar, so students do not feel intimidated. And creating new handshakes is fun, so students do not feel self-conscious. Yet as students practice and refine their handshake sequences, they quickly become engaged in the real challenges of choreography. Here are some important things to know about dance, especially if you have not taught or studied dance before.
  • Ordinary movement is dance. Students need not imitate trained dancers. Ballet and hip-hop moves are welcome, but not required. Ask students to create their own movements, based on their individual abilities, knowledge, and desires. Everyday movement like shaking hands is fine. Some students like to incorporate tumbling or soccer movements into their work. Welcome beginners.

"Growing up in Poland and learning about the art of dance, I always thought about teaching and thought that was such a wonderful profession to have. Shortly after performing with a dance company, I came to the United States and overnight I quit performing and started teaching," she said. "It happened very quickly but it was something I wanted to do." Dannenbring opened her own studio, The Academy of Dance, 10 years ago, and both boys and girls have come each week since then to learn how to dance. Her youngest class is filled with 3-year olds who dream of being ballerinas, and Dannenbring said she loves being around the children.

Learning To Belly Dance:
Where To Find Instruction
by Shira
You've decided you would like to learn how to belly dance. Now, all you need is a teacher. So you've looked in the yellow pages for your community, and found nothing listed for belly dance. Now what do you do? How do you find a local class? And if you don't find a local class, what can you do to start learning without a teacher? Only a tiny minority of belly dance teachers actually advertise in the yellow pages. Advertising in the yellow pages has certain disadvantagesfor example, most local telephone companies require you to purchase a monthly "business phone" service which costs substantially more than residential phone service in order to qualify for an ad. So the vast majority of belly dancers promote their classes through other methods. Here are some ideas on how to find a class in your community. But first, during your search remember these key rules:
  • If you don't find something in your initial search, try again after 3-4 months.

    History of swing dancing
The history of swing dates back to the 1920's, where the black community, while dancing to contemporary Jazz music, discovered the Charleston and the Lindy Hop. On March 26, 1926, the Savoy Ballroom opened its doors in New York. The Savoy was an immediate success with its block-long dance floor and a raised double bandstand. Nightly dancing attracted most of the best dancers in the New York area. Stimulated by the presence of great dancers and the best black bands, music at the Savoy was largely Swinging Jazz. One evening in 1927, following Lindbergh's flight to Paris, a local dance enthusiast named "Shorty George" Snowden was watching some of the dancing couples. A newspaper reporter asked him what dance they were doing, and it just so happened that there was a newspaper with an article about Lindbergh's flight sitting on the bench next to them. The title of the article read, "Lindy Hops The Atlantic," and George just sort of read that and said, "Lindy Hop" and the name stuck. In the mid 1930's, a bouncy six beat variant was named the Jitterbug by the band leader Cab Calloway when he introduced a tune in 1934 entitled "
