TEARS OF A NATION
I met a man of many colors
And a tear was upon his cheek.
"Old man" I ask, "why do you cry With such an agonizing weep?" "Oh child" this man he says to me, "My heart is broken in so many ways That I believe this day to end Will find me out stretched and far within The encompassing earth of sin." I sat down beside this man And asked him "do not cry. For what you think is so bad That life will pass you by?" He looks at me with such sad eyes.

American Indian Clothing and Regalia
Originally, there were many different traditional clothing styles in North America. Nearly every Native American tribe had its own distinctive style of dress, and the people could often tell each other's tribal identities by looking at their clothes, headdresses, and ornamentation. In most tribes, Native American men wore breechclouts or breechcloths (a long rectangular piece of hide or cloth tucked over a belt, so that the flaps fell down in front and behind), sometimes with leather leggings attached in colder climates. Here's a sketch of a Plains Indian breechclout and legging pants. In other tribes Indian men wore short kilts, fur trousers, or just went naked. Most Native American women wore skirts and leggings, though the length and material of the skirts varied. In some Indian cultures shirts were optional and were usually treated more like coats, while in others, women always wore tunics or mantles in public. And in other tribes women usually wore one-piece dresses instead, like this Cheyenne buckskin dress . Headgear, cloaks, and formal clothing were even more variable. Nearly all Native Americans had some form of moccasin (a sturdy leather shoe) or mukluk (heavier boot), with the styles of footwear differing from tribe to tribe (as you can see from

This page covers performance for Indigenous groupsIndians, Native Americans, Amerindians, First Nations in the United States and Canada, with little on Mexico. Performance , here, is defined broadly as any staged and/or enacted created for both peoples outside a grouptourists and others and/or for themselves. Ceremony, ritual, and religious traditions, such as the Ghost Dance and Yuwipi, are included here because they contain performative elementsnot because they are 'theatre.' Their mention here is to respect them as spiritual practice for those indigenous groups and individuals who take part in them.
While some periodicals listed, such as Native Americas, cover groups in the Southern part of the Western Hemisphere, that is Mexico, Central and South Americas there's little else here. For performance in Mexico and other southern countries/areas go to Latina/o Performance

NativeTech: Native American Technology and Art.
NATIVE AMERICAN BEADWORK Beads and Pendants of the Eastern Forest ~Meaning in Native American Life~ Beauty aside, wearing or presenting jewelry had many social, economic, political and religious implications for the Native Americans of the 1600ís in southern New England. Jewelry was used to show connection with a particular group. Beads validated treaties and were used to remember oral tradition, as well as for exchange and currency. There were many ritual aspects of beads and pendants used in ceremonies of dance, curing and sacrifice. Jewelry was also used in many ërites of passageí which individuals passed through in their lives. Personal Aesthetics: Native Americans in New England, especially young women, enhanced their dress with beads and pendants. Wampum beads were treasured possessions and elaborate types and large amounts of jewelry were worn. Native American women, however, were considered less vain than European women. Besides jewelry, beads decorated clothing or were inlaid into objects of wood for aesthetic beauty. Wampum inlaid wooden items included tomahawk handles, pendants, and native bread mixing bowls. Group Identity: Among many northeastern tribes, individuals acquired a spiritual totem at adolescence, often a mammal, snake, bird, claw, tooth or other animal part which was henceforth carried with that individual. Personal totems often coincided with those of a personís family, clan or society. Jewelry was a means for Native Americans to show they belonged to that group. A male catís head wrapped in trade cloth was one such totem. Totems were used in divination and to ensure opportunity. Native Americans wore beads and pendants to show ingredients in their social lives, economic and political concerns, and in beliefs of cosmology and religion.

57. Native Americans
For centuries native peoples have gathered together and dance, Women s Traditional dance, Grass dance all are ago but like much of american Indian culture
http://www.thewildwest.org/native_american/art/
It was not too long ago that Indian arts and crafts, no matter what, were considered "novelties" or "trinkets" to be brought home from road trips or vacations. Music and dance was confined to the native world or offered in tourist attractions as an illustration of a lifestyle unknown to many people. Over the past few decades however, in conjunction with a heightened interest in all things Indian, came a vast and varied interest in their art. Expression in the art and dance among North America's indigenous peoples is many faceted, as much a part of life in the form of function and ceremony as it is decoration or performance. Today the Indian arts have been "discovered," and a large cross section of humanity is enjoying its intrinsic excellence, vitality, originality and tradition they offer to the heart and head.

INDIAN DANCES For centuries native peoples have gathered together and engaged in ceremonial and celebratory dance. Men's Traditional Dance, Women's Traditional Dance, Grass Dance...all are rooted in those days long ago but like much of American Indian culture, these roots are not simply history. Attend any powwow today and you can see these dances recreated by men, women and children in exhibition and competition as lush illustrations of "living history." Men's Traditional Dance: Danced with exaggerated movement above the waist to simulate hunting, tracking or fighting but heavy, grounded, flat-footed lower body, this dance originated with members of warrior societies on the Great Plains. Costume includes an eagle feather bustle and hair roach made of porcupine quills. While many tribal gatherings today work to join and unite tribes from across the continent, homogenizing some of the dances to suit all, Men's Traditional dance remains tribe specific in terms of style and dress.

Blue Cloud Abbey Native American Photograph Collection
In search of historical photographs to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition, the USGS went to the Blue Cloud Abbey in Marvin, S.D. The USGS uncovered 337 glass plate negatives featuring Native Americans from the late 1800s to early 1900s; however, the negatives had deteriorated almost beyond restoration. The USGS is now in the process of restoring, scanning, and printing these historical photographic records of the northern Great Plains. These photos are part of a collection of more than 50,000 images that Benedictine monks gathered as they traveled through Dakota Territory ministering to tribal communities. These photos, although taken at a later date, provide a crucial insight into the landscapes and cultures that the Lewis and Clark expedition would have encountered along the Missouri River, and they also provide a valuable historical tool to Native American tribes. A collection of 28 of these historical Native American photos are featured below.
