About Nancy Butterfly
The North West tradition comes from Lancashire, a county in the North West of the UK where women would dance in the street wearing clogs, the footwear of the day, naming the dances after local towns Our aims are simple - to preserve the tradition, adapting to our abilities and to have a good time doing it. The 'Butterflies' have danced in the Midlands region of the UK and our repertoire includes traditional dances from the north west and dances in the north west style named after local Redditch areas. Our dances include Wigan, Carr Lodge Polka, Holmes Chapel and also Clitheroe - with attitude (Spice Girls beware!). Some of our 15 dance repertoire include Preston, Altrincham, and an especially nice garland dance Grenoside.
22 Years on and still dancing!
We are now in our twenty-second year of dance and this year we have recruited more dancers, however we are very keen for some more musicians to join us. Accordion, melodeon, fiddle or flute players are all welcome to accompany our BIG bass drum. Anyone in who is interested in joining us (dancers or musicians) are most welcome to our practice nights on Mondays at Redditch, Worcestershire. Please email us for contact details.

All you really wanted to know, and some things you didn't.

By Steve Douglas Introduction This article attempts to explain the essence of Cotswold Morris and gives some insight into the form of the dancing and how the dancers organize themselves and perform. These days most people in the United Kingdom have either seen Cotswold Morris dance, or know about it. However, it is a serious presumption to expect that everyone in the world knows what a pub is, never mind how Cotswold Morris dancing works. Some things here may be obvious to you and me but not to the majority of non-English people, in other words, most of the world. Please therefore bear with me when I say something obvious, or say something slightly inaccurate for the sake of simplicity. The Cotswold Style of Morris Cotswold Morris is not restricted to the geographical region of The Cotswolds. It is danced all over the country, and all over the world too. If you had to sum up the Cotswold style in a few phrases you would have to say that it was typified by a light, jumping style, and the use of bells, sticks and hand-kerchiefs (or wavers as they are sometimes known). The expression 'light, jumping style' is a relative term, other styles of Morris involve a heavier 'stamping rhythm' type of dance coupled with shouts, more akin to the African tribal dancing. It is relative because not all Cotswold Morris sides perform strictly 'light' jumping. Some dances for example involve heavy footwork and, especially with a double or triple team (12 or 18 dancers) the expression 'light' does not come to mind. For example, on one memorable occasion Eynsham Morris, who dance the Cotswold Style, broke the stage at the Chippenham Folk Festival dancing a double set of

Version 39: Summaries of 66 dances, 11 aliases and 11 traditions. (Formats: to read on Palm Pilot to print or to read on-line
What is it?
It is a compact set of instructions for a number of Cotswold Morris Dances (a type of traditional English performance folk dancing) that I made as reminders for myself. I have put it on the WWW lest it is of use or of interest to anyone else. The notes are fairly detailed for their length but do not have precise stylistic comments or timings because I wanted to keep them small enough to be read quickly as one gets up to dance (which I later found also enabled them to mostly fit on the screen of a Palm Pilot ). I make no guarantees as to the accuracy (these were all written down from life not from canonical reference books) and, anyway, there are many variations in how different teams dance particular dances (especially the Upton-upon-Severn Stick Dance!). Lest you want more detail, I have also put my Cotswold Morris Dance Detailed Notes
Download for Printing
The most convenient form in which to read it in a hurry is from an old fashioned paper print out. Here it is for download If you want to print it out. For compactness it is best to print it in a fairly small font, double column and

Morris Dancing has suffered from many misconceptions regarding the ritualistic and social origins of the various forms of dance on who might have been involved, why a certain dance was performed at a particular time of year and for what purpose...all leaving the inquirer somewhat perplexed. For those of you who are travelling to England in search of folk dance traditions or for those who would like to begin to find out more about a local group this brief introduction is given to wet your taste buds. If you would like to know more, Mystical WWW would be happy to answer any of your questions with the assistance of a dance researcher on the team. It is now widely accepted by academics that Morris Dances, like Country Dances, were, for many generations, part of English country social gatherings whilst also an early release for artistic expression. Many books have been written on the subject with perhaps the most prolific and respected writer being Cecil J. Sharp

A brief history of the Helier Morris Men
The chronology is up to date. The key points are as follows. Harry Kitchener at the Anne Port Bay Folk Club formed the Helier Morris Men, in 1975 and we first danced out in that same year. We took part in the Battle of Flowers which is a well know event here in the Channel Islands ("the Battle" as its known locally), dancing at intervals up and down the parade. In 1976 we had our first Ale (for those of you who know little about Morris, an ale is where we get together and dance with other Morris sides, sing songs and generally enjoy ourselves). We invited the Wessex Morris Men, who feature a lot in ours and in a lot of side's history. At Christmas we performed our first Mummers Play (again for those of you that know little about Morris, a Mummers play is just that, a short act usually based around the concept of death and resurrection). 1980 saw us no longer able to practice at Howard Davis Farm, as the barn we used during the winter months was converted into Science labs.

99. Morris Dance Notation Using
morris dance Notation using abc. abc is a musical notation system developedby Chris Walshaw. Applicability to morris dance Notation.
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/morris/music/wwwdance.html
abc
Morris Dance Notation using abc
abc is a musical notation system developed by Chris Walshaw . It is in widespread use for the transmission of folk music via ASCII text, and there are numerous programs which convert the abc source code into beautifully typeset score and/or audio outputs. One of these abc client programs is abc2ps by Michael Methfessel abc language (w:) which permits alignment of lyrics with notes. This extension can be applied to the problem of communicating the notations of folk dancing; i.e., stepping and hand motions. In particular, it is demonstrably applicable to morris dancing.
Applicability to Morris Dance Notation
Historically morris dance notation has been done by typesetting (or handwriting) abbreviations of foot stepping and hand motions under and over the musical score. This was the methodology originally employed by Cecil Sharp in the Morris Book, and it has been continued in one form or another in almost all subsequent publications for teaching the morris. In June of 1997 Norman Stanfield of the Morris Dancing Discussion List started a thread on the problem of jigs with slow capers. The existing notation for the musical transitions into and out of slow caper sections has rarely been precise enough to communicate exactly how a tune might be played. In many cases the exact nature of the pattern of stepping is equally ambiguous. Thus there is variation in the interpretation of the dances.
