Over just a few decades, Mark Morris has choreographed over 100 works both for his own company, the Mark Morris Dance Group, and for other major companies such as the San Francisco Ballet and American Ballet Theater. In doing so, he has established himself as the most original, most intelligent, most accessible choreographer working in the world today. Morris' work grows out of a highly refined musicality. His interests range from baroque to rock and his delight in the music he selects for his works visibly flows in the movement of his dancers. Grounded in classical technique, Morris has evolved a style all his own, distinctly of the twentieth century. His dances have a thinking, witty, and ironic character rare on the dance stage. Still, even newbies to the dance audience will have no puzzlement at the unfolding pleasures on the stage. CV agrees with critics who say Morris' masterpiece is L'Allegro, Il Penseroso, ed IlModerato

Behind the Scenes STARCK® ADULT ULTRASONEX TOOTHBRUSH "It’s like a truffle," I enthused to The Beautiful Companion at intermission of the Mark Morris Dance Group performance in Zellerbach Hall, "You bite into the truffle and you get the flavor and texture of the rich chocolate exterior, then the burst of the different, contrasting flavor and texture of the filling. The two sets of flavors and texture play off of one another, adding complexity and pleasure to each other." Liebesliederwalzer Dixit Dominus , the premiere engagement of this dance. Morris’ choreography seems to grow organically out of his musical choices and is always impeccably tuned to both the broad sweep and the detailed phrasings and tones of the accompanying compositions. "Accompanying" is an almost dangerous word here, because both of these pieces of music are exquisite settings of text to voice with instrumental accompaniment, in themselves works of complexity and great beauty. In the Brahms, four voices, in a variety of solos and combinations, are accompanied by four hands at the piano. The Handel, too, has four voices plus a chorus and orchestra.

Welcome to a description of Morris dancing in Minnesota
Morris dancing is a generic name for a number of types of traditional English dance forms. Although it is primarily used to describe Cotswold style dances, Morris also includes sword dances (primarily from the northern regions of England) and Border dances (from the Welsh-English border). Each of these dance forms have been and continue to be of a ritual rather than social nature, and have existed in one form or another for five centuries or more. Today they are danced by teams throughout the world, although primarily in England and the US. Minnesota is home to a number of ritual performance teams including 4 Cotswold teams (or 'sides' as they are called). They include MTM : Minnesota Traditional Morris (a men's side), the Bells of the North (a women's side), Ramsey's Braggarts (a men's side), and Uptown-on-Calhoun (a mixed [which is not to say confused] gender side). Several ritual sword-dance teams also exist. They are Vorpal Sword (an English Rapper-sword side), Short Sword (also Rapper), the

his is a lively reel or jiglike dance of Britain that might possibly be a relic of an old pagan May Eve ceremony, still performed in some countries at Beltane (see Sabbats ) and midsummer festivals. The Morris dance is thought to have been named after moeisca , a Moorish dance or play which is solely performed by men, and is believed to bring good luck. Morris dancing dates back to the 15th century, and some theories place its origin in Britain in the 14th century. The dance is descended from an old Moorish dance, the fandango of Spain. Also, is might be associated with a secret Moroccan cult, the Dhulqarneni, or "The Two-Horned Ones," who danced in a circle to raise magic power and worshipped the moon. It is believed to have been introduced into Britain from Spain by John of Gaunt, son of Edward III (1312-1377), who spent considerable time in that country. According to anthropologist Margaret A. Murray, an old Morris dance tune, "Green Garters," was the traditional music for the processional dance to the Maypole on May morning. The May games and dances, which were the pagan festivals and fertility rites, were important to villages, especially in the 16th century, and were tolerated by the Church during the 17th century, but the Puritans abolished them. Morris dancing was restored during the Restoration.

    Making History
Professor Alun Howkins, professor of social history at Sussex University, discussed the origins of Morris dancing. He said that, as with many folk customs, the origins are hidden in the mists of time and coloured by later perceptions, which may or may not have been correct. According to Professor Howkins, when people recorded these customs in the 1890s, they were obsessed with seeking out ancient beginnings. In the seventeenth century there had been suggestions of a connection with Moorish dancing and it was adopted as a convenient theory. It fitted in, for example, because some dancers blacked up their faces and attached bells to their legs, which was believed to be something to do with North Africa. Similarly, there is no evidence that Morris dancing has any connection with pagan festivals.

Some of the documented facts about the Morris dance

    By Steve Douglas
Origin One question that is often asked of a Morris dancer is "What are the origins of Morris dancing?" If you ask this question of half-a-dozen different people you will likely get six different answers. I used to think that no-one really knew. In one sense that is true, in another it is not. The problem comes down to what you actually mean by the question. If what you mean is "How did the dance come to be in England?" the answer is fairly clear-cut. The English Morris dance is probably derived from the Spanish or Flemish Morisco. Dictionary-writers began to assert this fact in the 17th century:
Morisque: f. A Morris (or Moorish) daunce; also, the mizzen sayle of a Ship.

    Who are we?
We are Bristol's longest-established men's Morris Dance Side, founded in 1951. We perform Cotswold Morris Dances, (some more traditional than others!), to music provided by melodeon, concertina, fiddle or pipe and tabor. Our current active membership is around two dozen (including more than half-a-dozen youngsters, mainly children of adult members, who are our second generation!). We also have a cantankerous horse, called (funnily enough) Horse , who now has his own Web Page and e-mail address for fanmail! We are always delighted to welcome prospective new members, either dancers or musicians. No previous experience is necessary, but the best time for newcomers to investigate us, or start dancing is around October. This is because our practice season runs largely from the end of September to mid April. We dance throughout the year, but our busiest season for dancing out is between May and July. The official start of our dancing year is on May Day - May 1st - when we dance at sunrise, to the traditional audience of one passer-by and his (or her) dog

on poetry from The Atlantic Monthly. A Morris Dance by Mary Jo Salter Across the Common, on a lovely May day in New England, I see and hear the Middle Ages drawing near, a parade of Morris dancers. One plucks a lute. One twirls a cape. Up close, a lifted pinafore exposes cellulite, and more. O why aren't they in better shape, the middle-aged Morris dancers? Already it's not hard to guess the Wednesday-night meetings at the gym. They ought to practice more, or less, the middle-aged Morris dancers. Short-winded troubadours and pages, what really makes me so morose is how they can't admit their ages, the middle-aged Morris dancers. Watching them gamboling and tripping on Maypole ribbons like leashed dogs, then landing, thunderously, on clogs, I have to say I feel like skipping the middle-aged Morris dancers. Yet bunions and receding gums a member of their generation. Maybe they'd let me play the drums

Mark Morris has returned to The Pillow in the 2001 season, putting on the greatest performance of the summer. He brings with him a varied collection of dances that show his range and genius. July 27, 2001 performance reviewed by Connell McGrath
Morris choreographs his work by beginning with a piece of music, and creatiung movement from what he hears. Typically, his dances are tightly in-sync with the music, which they express with sublime fluency. The evening began with the very funny and lively Canonic 3/4 Studies (1982) to piano waltzes by various composers played in situ by Donald Berman. The dancers wore black tights and white t-shirts and did a variety of spoofs on the classical ballet genre. Although the piece was amusing and full of not-so-subtle distortions of ballet, it was neither vindictive, nor nasty. 'Irreverent' was the word that kept coming to mind, but there was depth and enough abstraction to allow each watcher to imagine his or her own meaning. This is an early work for Morris - he created his Group in 1980 at the age of 24 - but it has an insight and maturity of vision, and is still fresh today. Studies was a reaction to Morris’s early ballet career which he left because, among other reasons, he grew tired of pretending to be in love with ballarinas.

from the lewd to the sacred
July 2, 2003 performance reviewed by Connell McGrath
Mark Morris Dance Group returned for the fourth consecutive season with a great set of performances for sold-out audiences at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Morris' Group transitions from crotch-grabbing lewdness to a dance that most closely resembles the rituals of Egyptian priests. The work they are presenting this year spans 21 years of choreography, beginning with a 1982 piece called New Love Song Waltzes and ending with his latest piece, Serenade , which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the spring of 2003. New Love Song Waltzes opens this season's show. It is set to Brahms' piece by the same name, performed this year to live music by four singers and two pianists. It revolves around the familiar early Morris theme of the mechanics of love stripped of its sentimentality. We don't see the suffering of loss, abandonment, and betrayal, nor do we see the ecstasy and passion of new love.
