History in England
Cotswold Morris with sticks Before the English Civil War , the working peasantry often took part in Morris dances, especially at Whitsun . The Puritan government of Oliver Cromwell , however, suppressed Whitsun Ales and other such festivities. When the crown was restored by Charles II , the springtime festivals were restored. • May Day: We dance the sun up at dawn (you heard me, dawn) every year on the shores of Lake Michigan, at the lakefront park just east of Morse and Sheridan. This is the approximate location
  • AntiMorris: the same site used for May Day . (See more about the AntiMorris
  • Cultural Festivals: We have danced at several of these over the years, including the Custer Street Faire, the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, the Skokie Cultural Festival, The Real Ale Festival , and the Chicago Park District's Unity in Our Community festival held in Pottawattomie Park.
  • Farmer's Markets: Another fun place to dance out. We have occasionally shown up at these events in Evanston and Oak Park, especially later in the summer.
  • Special Occasions:
  • Morris Ales: These are gatherings of Morris dancers held throughout the year in various locations. We attend the Midwest Morris Ale, the location of which changes with the host team each year, and sometimes other ales throughout the region and beyond.
Ravenswood Morris meets to practice most Thursday evenings from 7PM to 9PM. As of September 2002 we have moved to a new practice site

Guillermo Resto and Mark Morris in Morris's "Dido and Aeneas." Cylla Von Tiedmann photo courtesy Mark Morris Dance Group. Morris later made a thrilling cave-man stomp to Lou Harrison's "Grand Duo" called "Polka," which he had everyone moving like Resto full bodied, clear-cut, vigorous, and totally invested. (The 1992 work was incorporated the following year into the longer dance named for the music.) This last quality total investment in the material has made Resto the essential Morris dancer. It is the essential Resto quality. He had it the first time I saw him, in a really dreadful dance (not by Morris) in which he had to if memory serves jump through a paper hoop wearing a white-fringed cowboy outfit. (He did this with great dignity.) He has it today.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition A Morris dance is a form of folk dance For alternative meanings, see Dance (disambiguation) Dance is, in general terms, human movement with an implied purpose such as the communication of an aesthetic or emotional idea, participation with music, and/or the achievement of certain mind-body states, sometimes spiritual-mystical ones, sometimes as simple as physical fitness. Dance is thus contrasted to utilitarian movementsuch

Though I dance morris, I am not a pagan or a wiccan; nor are many whodance morris. This is most certainly not morris dance, however.

Here's To Our Morris We Love It So Well. . .
Recently, like this Fall I began practicing with the Commonwealth Morris Men and hope to be dancing with them in the coming performance season. And then, as if this wasn't enough, Lemon and Capers merged with Middlesex Morris (to my knowledge the only other Mixed (men and women) adult side in the area) to form a new, as-yet unnamed entity. This is Exciting, because both teams have a long history and bring a lot of enthusiasm and energy together. So, watch for us this coming season!
2 March 2000: News Flash! We are now officially Red Herring Morris! The official team page is hosted elsewhere.
12 May 2000: After 3 glorious seasons with Lemon and Capers/Red Herring, I have ended my tenure with that team.
But, Whut Izzit?
Morris dance is a form of traditional English folk dance usually done in the spring. It is distinct from English Country Dance (the stuff you saw in all those Jane Austen movies over the past couple of years). There are many types of Morris (Cotswold, Border, Step-Clog, Sword, Rapper, Molly, Garland); I dance with two Cotswold Morris teams. Dances are typically done in sets of four, six or eight, dancers wear bellpads on their shins, usually white trousers and shirts with team-specific "Kit" (waistcoats, sashes, baldrics, jackets) which usually includes ribbons and rosettes. We dance to live music, typically a fiddle or some sort of squeezebox or accordian (though other instruments are used too, up to and possibly including a grand piano on a flatbed).
