Dance
At Hollins, dance extends far beyond its traditional boundaries. Students learn to think of dance as a dynamic form, full of possibilities for growth and innovation. Each member of the Hollins dance community is encouraged to discover, refine, and celebrate who she is as an artist. The program aims to support a wide variety of student interests by offering outstanding technique classes, with extensive opportunities to perform and craft with an emphasis on interdisciplinary study in visual art, film, creative writing, and theatre. Students are constantly preparing for or in the midst of performance.
Hollins is proud to be the home of two dance companies. The Hollins Dance Repertory Company, made up of undergraduate dance majors, has garnered national attention for its imaginative, energy-filled performances. Graduate students and independent professional dancers perform with the Hollins Dance Project, Hollins's professional company in residence.
Donna Faye Burchfield, associate professor of dance and director of Hollins's dance department, has been choreographing and performing her own work since 1979. Burchfield is dean of the American Dance Festival (ADF), the world's largest modern dance festival. As a result of this association, students have access to the ADF community each winter and summer, with the option of earning academic credit for their studies.
Hollins Repertory Dance Company The Hollins Repertory Dance Company gives students the opportunity to perform on a professional level, with gratifying results.

Dance Meditation for Children and Teens Introduction We are integral beings; moving in daily rhythms and habits using our body, mind, emotions powered by spirited enthusiastic energy. Movement is natural; the force that gets us where we want, doing what we want. Dance meditation gets the body moving aerobically breathing increases, oxygenating blood; hormones that give us a sense of well-being circulate; joints and muscles are flexed; heart and lungs are toned. And, our outlook on life is lifted; we feel energized by dancing. The goal of meditation is communion with the Spirited Self, and while in our body-mind we can feel this inner Spirit enlivened while dancing, as we hold positive thoughts and caring feelings for ourselves and all.

About Us
Mission and Programs
The Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance keeps vital and builds upon the unique work Martha Graham by:
  • Performing the ballets of Martha Graham in authentic and innovative ways; Providing instruction in the dance vocabulary of Martha Graham, an evolving form of communication through movement; Preserving and documenting Martha Graham's rich historical legacy; Generating new theatrical experiences and artistic resources, and Cultivating audiences moved by the evolving Martha Graham art form.
The Martha Graham Dance Company, founded by Martha Graham in 1926, is the first and most celebrated modern dance company in the world. On tour and in annual New York seasons, the Martha Graham Dance Company reveals the power and magnitude of the Martha Graham repertory and, beginning in Spring 2005, will begin to present new works by guest choreographers in cross-disciplinary collaborations. The Martha Graham Dance Company was the training ground for great modern choreographers Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp, has presented guest stars Mikhail Baryshnikov, Margot Fonteyn, and Rudolf Nureyev and features an international roster of the most talented modern dancers in the world today.
A new division, the Martha Graham Resources, was created in 2002 to preserve, restore, interpret and share the assets of one of the world's most extensive collections of dance history: sets, costumes, audio and video recordings, photographs and correspondence. This department is responsible for licensing the use of resources owned by the Martha Graham Center to enable other institutions to mount productions of the dances of Martha Graham, as well as further developing the Center's archives and assets, including its indispensable relationship with past generations of Graham artists, to create new artistic programming ranging from curricula, lectures and exhibits to broadcast and live theatrical performances.

ABSTRACT This article traces the history of the International Dancesport championship "Modern Standard Ballroom" dances: Viennese Waltz, Modern Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, and Quickstep. INTRODUCTION The five ballroom dances: Modern Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot, and Quickstep, are danced the world over both socially and in DanceSport competitions The word 'ballroom' denotes a room where balls may be held: that is: formal social dances. Balls were important social events in the days before radio and television (as in 'having a ball'). The word 'ball' derives from the Latin 'balare' meaning 'to dance'. This is also the origin of the related words : ballet, ballerina, ballad, etc. Note that this origin is quite different from that of a 'ball': a round object used for games. This derives from the Old Norse : 'bollr', meaning 'to inflate'. The figures in the modern ballroom dances have now been standardised and categorised into various levels for teaching, with internationally agreed vocabularies, techniques, rhythms and tempos. But it was not always so.
