modern dance primer. Defining modern dance. Characteristics of modern dance. A defining characteristic of modern dance is the singular use of space.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/entertainment/markmorris/primer.html
Modern dance primer Defining modern dance Born and raised in the twentieth century, modern dance is often contrasted against ballet for definition. Ballet, the basis for all of Western theatrical dance, is a theatrical performance, using elements from a rich tapestry of traditional movements. Most ballets consist of dancing and music only, although some notable exceptions have included speeches from the characters. On a philosophical level, modern dance grew out of the need to express ideas singular to the twentieth century that could not be expressed through the older language of ballet. One of these ideas, conversely, was the avant-garde concept of themelessness. Around the end of World War II, choreographers began developing minimal dances without theme or emotion, with no pretense of inspiring the audience. Characteristics of modern dance A defining characteristic of modern dance is the singular use of space. While the ballet dancer faces the audience, the modern dancer uses all orientations. In a sense, performing for the audience is not the driving purpose behind a modern dance piece. The dancer's relationship to the music is also noticeably different than in ballet-the ballet dancer's movements correspond to the music; the modern dancer's movements may disregard it entirely. Music may be entirely absent, leaving the sound of the dancer's movements as the only backdrop.

M.A.D. Noting a need for more performance opportunities and for increased awareness of modern dance in Atlanta, Full Radius Dance created the Modern Atlanta Dance (MAD) Festival in 1995. Participation was open t o individual artists and companies based in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Twelve different individual artists and companie s were showcased in the inaugural festival.
The festival's beyond-all-expectations success assured its return and it became an annua l event. By 1998, it was widely regarded as presenting the best of Atlanta modern dance. In order to fulfill this mission with greater intent, the festival moved from an open showcase format to one professionally adjudicated. For the first time, a panel evaluated MAD Festival applicants. Consisting of dance professionals residing outside of the Atlanta area, the panel selected the festival participants through review of videotaped submissions. This method of selection continues.

Modern Dance History "Modern dance discloses nature, particularly human nature the inner nature of man." "Modern dance is intellectually conceived and projected.
It is not an art of shallow minds."
The art today known as modern dance began with a few creative and daring spirited individuals. Isadora Duncan, Mary Wigman, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn are considered the forerunners of modern dance. Although the physical technique of modern dance has gone through, and is still going through, drastic interpretation, a spiritual essence is the core that these forerunners established. Isadora Duncan was raised in the United States but spent most of her adult life in Europe. There, her radical form of dance was appreciated, and, as a young woman, she was adored. She performed her first public concert in 1900 in London and continued performing and teaching until her death in 1927. As a dancer, she introduced a "highly magnetic personal style." Her movement was described as "round without softness." She utilized symmetry and melody, unlike many contemporaries of modern dance. Most importantly, she elevated the spiritual component of dance. Ruth St. Denis

160. Dance Photography: Dance And Ballet Photographs
dance photographs including ballet, hip hop, and modern. Numerous photographs of Indiana University dancers.
http://deweesearts.com/dance_photography.htm
D eWeese P hotographic A rts Dance Photography I really enjoy working with dancers and I'm fortunate to have such strong dance programs at Indiana University and Butler University nearby, not to mention the area professional companies in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Louisville. I don't think that most people realize that dance requires as much dedication, and that dancers are every bit as fit, as most athletes. If rhythm gymnastics and figure skating are Olympic events, then ballet should be too. Many thanks to the dancers that participated in these photographs. Four dance portfolio's are on line. The ballet page contains the winner of the 2002 National Dance Week photography contest. Dance Nudes includes a few shots from a recent project "Attitude!" . Photographs from the series are part of the current show at Echo Gallery in Chicago. Go to their site and click on the "snapshots" link to see photographs from the May 31'st opening. You've got to visit this gallery if you're in Chicago! Photographs from the project are on display at Wilhem Photographic in Monterey, California and will be part of a book published by Feierabend Publishers in the spring of 2004, and included in an exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Ft. Collins, Colorado opening July 2nd 2004. We are always interested in working with dancers near the Central Indiana area. Please
