85. The Deborah Hay Dance Company - Home

PHOTOS The Deborah Hay Dance Company Biography Deborah Hay was born in Brooklyn in 1941. Her mother had performed with the corps de ballet at the Roxy Theater and as her first dance teacher she directed her training until Hay was a teenager. Mother and daughter regularly attended Radio City Music Hall, where she most fondly remembers the Rockettes and the orchestra. They went each season to see the New York City Ballet at City Center. By the time she was a teenager she was seeking her own interest in modern rather than classical training. Living in Manhattan by 1960 and studying at the Cunningham studio, she became part a group of experimental artists who were influenced by Merce Cunningham and John Cage, later known as the Judson Dance Theater, one of the most radical and explosive art movements of the twentieth century. In 1964 she danced with the Cunningham Dance Company during a 6-month tour through Europe and Asia. By 1967, Hay had already achieved a prominent status as a young choreographer and her distinctive style began to emerge. She focused on large-scale dance projects involving untrained dancers, thus distancing herself from the performing arena and opening a long period of reflection about how dance is transmitted and who dances. This stage of Hay's career reached into the following decade. In 1970 she left New York and settled in a community in northern Vermont. In this period Hay began to define a rigorous method of performance practice that still continues to inform her work as a student, teacher, and dancer. The most notable achievement of the period is a series of 10 circle dances, which did not include an audience. This encounter, of a powerful concept combined with the exquisitely simple choreography of the ten dances, are collected and described in Moving Through the Universe in Bare Feet (Swallow Press, 1975). Hay's first book on choreography and the first example of her distinctive memory/concept mode of choreographic record, is based on the narratives underlining the process of her dance-making, rather than the technical specifications or notations of their form.

A B C ... XYZ Historically, there are two different meanings for the term "Modern Dance". Originally, The term came from the early 20th. Century meaning that the dances ( Ballroom type ) being done were modern in nature, rather than the older Quadrilles Two Step Minuet etc. of the time. These "Modern Dances" were generally associated with Vernon and Irene Castle Maurice Mouvet and Florence Walton and others who were ballroom dancers of the time (1910s). Isadora Duncan was to become the mother of (CURRENT DAY) Modern Dance and by 1913 had reached international fame with others following suit. Today the term means something different however. This term 'Modern Dance' designates a concept of dance rather than a School or Studio. By the 1920's it was a solo or group - free form type dance with no base in its beginnings but utilized many other styles of dance movement ( originally Greek and Oriental ). This new free form style was thought ridiculous at first but Duncan's success with this style opened many eyes along with other pioneers such as

Traditional Chinese Culture in Taiwan :
Chinese Dance
The Art of Chinese Dance
Most people use sound to communicate in their everyday life, but a dancer on stage uses his limbs and body to do the same thing. Just like the Chinese language, Chinese dance has its own unique vocabulary, semantics, and syntactic structure that enable a dancer on stage to fully express his thoughts and feelings with ease and grace. The art of Chinese dance traces its origins to even before the appearance of the first written Chinese characters. Ceramic pots have been unearthed in the Sun Chia Chai excavation site in Ta-tung County of the western Chinese province of Chinghai that depict colorful dancing figures. A study of these archaeological artifacts reveals that people of the Neolithic Yang-shao culture of around the fourth millennium B.C. already had choreo graphed group dances in which the participants locked arms and stamped their feet while singing to instrumental accompaniment. Chinese dance was divided into two types, civilian and military, during the Shang and Chou periods of the first millennium B.C. In civilian dance, dancers held feather banners in their hands, symbolizing the distribution of the fruits of the day's hunting or fishing. This gradually developed into the dance used in the emperor's periodic sacrificial rituals held outside the city, and other religious rituals.
