Technical Report 323

Basser Department of Computer Science

University of Sydney (revised 8 May 2004) ABSTRACT This article traces the some of the history of the International Dancesport championship 'Latin-American' Dances: Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Cha Cha, and Jive.
The author and Anna Piper dancing the Cha Cha. INTRODUCTION Many dances popular around the world have originated in Latin America, for example the Bolero Carimbo Conga Cueca ... Rueda , and the Salsa . Three such dances : the Samba, Rumba, and Cha Cha, plus the Paso Doble from Europe and the Jive from North America, have been singled out and are now performed all over the world as Latin-American dances in international DanceSport competitions , as well as being danced socially. These dances are for couples, usually each consisting of a man and a lady. The holds vary from figure to figure in these dances, sometimes in closed ballroom hold, sometimes with the partners holding each other with only one hand. The figures in these dances are standardised and categorised into various levels for teaching, with internationally agreed vocabularies, techniques, rhythms and tempos. But it was not always so. These 'Latin-American' dances were only been introduced into Western-European society in the twentieth century, and have some diverse origins in previous eras.

Comprehensive list of books on Ballroom dancing. Also includes books on swing and latin dancing, as well as history of partner dance.

Books on Ballroom Dancing
About this list
This list contains books on or about ballroom dancing, including Latin American dacnes, Swing, and the so-called nightclub dances such as the Hustle. This list includes books on dancing that, for the most part, appeared after 1970. While this cutoff date may seem somewhat arbitrary, it means that most of these books are either still in print, or can be found in major libraries. Social dancing changes with time; older books on dancing are of interest mainly to the historian and not to the practitioner of dancing. Moreover, the dancing boom of the 50's and 60's led to the production of a great many forgettable low-budget paperbacks, whose authors were neither competent dancers nor teachers. If you are interested in a comprehensive list of older books, I recommend searching the library of congress catalogues A few older books do appear in this list. They either have exceptional historical value, such as the book written by the Castles and another by Arthur Murray, or are unique in some way and assumed to have some redeeming value. Latin American music and dance
  • The term Latin American as used here encompasses the Americas south of the United States, as well as the entire Caribbean. The musics of this vast area are perhaps most efficiently discussed in terms of ethnic componentsEuropean (especially Iberian Amerindian African , and mestizo ("mixed" or acculturated).
Amerindian Background
  • During the colonial period in Latin America (16th-19th century) many Amerindian populations were decimated, and much traditional Amerindian musical culture was destroyed or syncretized with Iberian. Little evidence remains as to the real nature of music in the Aztec, Inca, and Maya civilizations apart from the testimony of 16th-century Spanish chroniclers and what can be seen of instrumentspercussion and winds, with almost total absence of stringsdepicted in hieroglyphs and pottery decorations. Modern Andean Indians still make extensive use of vertical flutes and panpipes, along with European instruments such as bass drums, harps, and guitars of different sizes. In Mesoamerica Indians now play harps, fiddles, and guitars based upon archaic Spanish models, or MARIMBAS of African origin, all of which have largely replaced indigenous instruments. Only in certain tropical areas (as the Amazon basin) are virtually unacculturated Amerindian musics found.
