Our Instructors Nan Holt Smith Nan has owned and operated Nan's School of Dance, Inc. since 1975. She began teaching ballet, tap and jazz at our original studio in Yadkinville, NC., where she grew up. She was a talent winner and finalist in the Miss North Carolina Pagent, and has a BS degree from NC State University. Nan and her husband opened the Greensboro studio in 1980. Nan attended the 1966 Governor's School and studied at the Academy of Dance Arts in Winston-Salem. She has done further study in New York and Atlanta. Jennifer Grinwis Jennifer, our assistant director, has been teaching on our staff since 1994. She attended the 1989 Governor's School in dance, and participated in the Guilford County Junior Miss Pageant in 1990, winning scholarship money for her dance performance. She attended NC State University in 1991 and 1992. Subsequently, she attended UNC-G where she majored in dance to further her training. Lori Knox A native of Salisbury, NC, Lori taught for 5 years at a studio there. She is trained and certified in the Cecchetti Method of Ballet. She worked two summer seasons at Carowinds, where she performed and and helped choreograph jazz and tap production numbers. For two years, she was a member of the prestigious Top Cats, the cheerleaders for the Carolina Panthers football team. Lori and her husband are the proud parents of a new baby boy. She has been a member of our teaching team since 1995. Brandi Scott Brandi graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in December, 2000, with a BA in Dance. She has previously taught gymnastics and dance in the Greensboro area. Brandi has danced in the North Carolina Dance Festival with Sidelong Dance Co. and X-Factor. This is Brandi's second year with Nan's.

(1994: ISBN 0-306-80553-7) This book and Rusty Frank's Tap! The Greatest Tap Stars and Their Stories , are two books from DaCapo Press considered essential reading for any tap enthusiast. In order to quickly describe the book, here is a passage from the introduction: In addition to a selected bibliography, an index, and footnotes, two important appendices have been included: an exhaustive list of films in which vernacular dancing may be seen (the best documentation of the subject) compiled by Ernest R. Smith, and a valuable analysis and notation of basic Afro-American movements by Nadia Chilkovsky [in Labanotation.] The subject of vernacular dance is so vast that, after six years of research, we gave up all idea of telling the whole story. Nevertheless, as we proceeded we found that certain dancers were consistently singled out for specific accomplishments, and certain major trends were mentioned repeatedly. So we limited ourselves to tracing major developments and describing the careers of dancers who created styles and established traditions. The aim of the book, therefore, is to chart the main currents in the stream of American vernacular dance.

M USICAL / D ANCE F ILMS M usical / D ance F ilms are cinematic forms that emphasize and showcase full-scale song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical or dance performance as part of the film narrative, or as an unrealistic "eruption" within the film). Or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography. In traditional musicals, cast members are ones who sing. Musicals highlight various musical artists or dancing stars, with lyrics that support the story line, often with an alternative, escapist vision of reality - a search for love, success, wealth, and popularity. Tremendous film choreography and orchestration often enhances musical numbers. With the coming of talking motion pictures, the musical film genre emerged from its roots: stage musicals and operettas, revues, music halls and vaudeville. They were the last of the major film genres, because they were dependent on sound captured on film. (How could a movie be "all-singing, all-dancing" without sound?)
