The Rose Academy of Irish Dance As anyone who has seen Irish Dance before knows, Irish Dance involves intricate footwork, fascinating rhythms, and music that comes from the heart. But to a dancer, there is so much more. Competitions and performances encourage dancers to present their skills in many different types of situations. Irish Dancers build self-esteem and self-confidence through mastering new skills, and performing in front of audiences. The competitive aspect of Irish Dance teaches the art of good sportsmanship. Solo dancing encourages dancers to challenge themselves, while figure dancing encourages teamwork. The Irish Dance community fosters a family spirit, in which many life long friendships have and will continue to be formed. And, of course, Irish Dance gives all ages and levels a great aerobic workout! Patricia Rose, TCRG Patricia began dancing with the Kelly School of Irish Dance in Los Angeles at the age of six. For the next 12 years, she competed throughout the Western United States. After placing in the Western US Regional Oireachtas in 1985, Patricia danced in the World Championships in Limerick, Ireland. She continued to place in the Oireachtas for the next four years, and in 1989, at the age of 14, became the Western US Regional Champion. In addition to competing, Patricia has always performed throughout Southern California at all types of events ranging from private parties and weddings to the Nations of San Diego and The Field Irish Pub and Restaurant in downtown San Diego.

Attorney Eamonn Dornan Malachy McAllister and Ciaran Ferry . Both Malachy and Ciaran have been waging intense campaigns to halt the deportation proceedings facing them. The toll on them and their families has been terrible. Malachy has just lost his wife, Bernadette, to a battle with cancer, and Ciaran has been serving for more than a year in a Colorado jail, keeping him from his American wife and young daughter. The Irish American Unity Conference (IAUC) is sponsoring this event and we hope that everyone interested in these important deportation cases will plan to attend. Monaghan K of C Hall

109. Boys Irish Step Dancing Costumes
Boys doing irish dance wear either long black pants or kilts. All of the images we have of irish dance come from the second half of the 20th century.
http://histclo.hispeed.com/act/dance/danceirc.html
Boys' Irish Step Dancing Costumes
Figure 1.Boys costumes are fairly standard, either black long pants or blazers and kilts worn with white shirts and ties. Modern costumes are quite different from those worn historically at feises. The dance costume has changed greatly from traditional garb. Boys doing Irish dance wear either long black pants or kilts. The girls wear dresses, never kilts for performances. Some schools do allow the girls to wear kilts for practice. Reserving the kilts for boys is done in part because the kilt was the ancient Celtic male garment and in part so the boys aren't dressed like the girls. This would discourage many younger boys fro participating in Irish dancing.
Costume Developments
Traditional garb
The dance costume has changed greatly from traditional garb. In the 1800s, dance masters wore hats, swallowtail coats, knee breeches, white stockings, and black shoes with silver buckles probably similar to today's hard shoes. (The expression "cover the buckle" seemed to mean crossing your feet so rapidly while dancing that the shine of the buckle covered the entire area.) In the 1800s, it is likely that female dancers wore ordinary peasant dresses or perhaps their "Sundaybest" and ribbons formed into flowers or crosses.
The Irish revival
After 1893 with the revival of Irish culture, the quest for a traditional Irish costume began. Pipers adopted the kilt which older male dancers later adopted in the 1910s and 1920s. Ironically, little evidence supports the argument that the kilt originated in Ireland; however, it is clearly Celtic. Today, male dancers wear either kilts or long pants.

Irish Dancing
My Irish dance shoes are merely tools that I use to express myself through dance. There are several benefits to dance which includes a different way to exercise, expression through dance, an emotional outlet, and learning about the "rules" of dance. (My object paper was on my own thoughts and feelings about Irish dance, then I expanded it for my final paper and included how dance can benefit everyone. That is one way to do your final paper; take your object paper and expand it and broaden the thesis.)
Here's a link with answers to frequently asked questions about Irish Dance.
Here is an essay about how dancing (specifically Irish Dance) can benefit everyone.
Them Old Dancing Shoes
by Michelle McDevitt
"What's in that green bag hanging off of your bookshelf?' asked Jenny.
"Oh, those are my Irish dancing shoes. I haven't used them since I've started school. I keep looking at them and telling myself that I'll go down to the dance studio, but I just never get around to it."
"You Irish dance? Is it like Riverdancing? I saw that on PBS during the summer. Can I see the shoes? Actually, can you show me a little dance?"
