Just what is Irish Music? It is helpful to think of Irish music as a large ocean of different styles and functions.Prior to the 19th century Ireland possessed several forms of music they included the Professional music of the Bard and court Harper tradition, the Professional Social Music of the dance, wedding or processional bands, and, the Folk Music of the Ordinary people- the plowman in the field and the weaver at the loom. The latter is perhaps my favorite it comes free from the soul and travels freely upon the wind! 88. Irish Step Dancing And Boys' Costumes
This interest was almost entirely within the irish community until River dance introduced irish dancing to the public at large in the 1990s.
http://histclo.hispeed.com/act/dance/danceir.html
Irish Step Dancing Costumes
Figure 1.Judges carefully watch this dancer's foot work. The normal boy's costume for Irish dancing is a short jacket, white shirt, tie, shoulder sash, kilt, and kneesocks. The kneesocks usually match either the jacket or the kilt. Some American dancing schools let the boys wear long black pants, but this is not common in Ireland. Irish dance has developed quietly in Ireland for centuries. Irish immigrants brought their traditional dances to America beginning in the 1840s, driven from their homeland by the Great Famine. Their dances had a profound influence on traditional American folk dances like square dancing and their music was a powerful ingredient in country music. Modern Irish dance, however did not begin to become popular until after World War II. The independence of Ireland in 1921, rising income levels after the War, and the increasing interest in Irish heritage by Irish Americans all contributed to the expanding interest in Irish dance. This interest was almost entirely within the Irish community until River Dance introduced Irish dancing to the public at large in the 1990s.

Editor's Notes -

About Irish Step Dancing
This booklet contains three articles by Jim Montague reprinted from Everything Irish , a Central New York bi-monthly newsletter. One, two, or all three of these articles may prove useful to a reader interested in Irish dancing.
The first article, To Dance and To Dream is intended for parents who may wish to enroll their children in an Irish dance school. In it, Montague not only describes the benefits of being a student of Irish dance, but also tries to explain a typical program's course, costs, and commitments.
In the second article, What Is a Feis? , Montague describes Irish dance competitions. He begins with the history of Irish dance, then goes on to explain the different levels of competition that are available to students of Irish dance at any local feis.
Understanding Championship Scoring
, the third article, is intended for those who follow the highest two levels of Irish dance competition Preliminary and Open Championship, yet have little idea what the scores mean once results are obtained. Montague attempts to explain three judge scoring and tabulation. He also includes a table showing the

When you attend an irish set dance, very little is explained, but then you are expected to know the sequence of moves in, for instance, the Cashel set, and
http://www.nmc.edu/~hmorgenstein/Essays/Irish.html
Irish Set Dancing
Irish set dances are squares (ancient Quadrilles) that developed in separate communities in Ireland. Because they developed separately but from the same roots, there are many similarities between the various Irish sets, but each set has its different sequence of movements. So why should Contra dancers do Irish sets? All in all, I highly recommend Irish set dancing. Of the many forms of dancing I know of, it is probably closest in style and rhythm to Contra dances. There is much swinging, much vigorous, fast dancing, and best of all, you will almost always find good dancers at an Irish set dance.
PS: If you want to find out where you can do Irish sets (all over the world) check out the Set Dancing News published by Bill Lynch.
