... Visiting Santa Fe : Native American Culture Pueblo Indian Culture Of the 19 Native American communities located in New Mexico, eight are near Santa Fe. All eight are Pueblo Indian tribes and their communities are referred to as Pueblos. Many of these Pueblos were established centuries ago such as the Taos Pueblo which is thought to have been continuously occupied for close to 1,000 years. Each Pueblo has its own tribal government, traditions, ceremonies and is a sovereign and separate entity. The Pueblos typically welcome visitors and much can be learned about Native American culture by visiting the Pueblos, especially during the specific dances and feast days open to the public. The Santa Fe Indian Market - The world's largest American Indian art market takes place in Santa Fe each August. But, while the Pueblo people are traditionally generous and welcoming, there are modes of conduct that should be followed to avoid misunderstandings or violations of their customs. Here are some suggestions for making sure a visit to a Pueblo is enjoyable for everyone involved: Please observe all rules and regulations of the individual Pueblos
  • Please control children and see that they are respectful.

Indian Folk and Tribal Dances
Indian folk and tribal dances are simple dances, and are performed to express joy. Folk dances are performed for every possible occasion, to celebrate the arrival of seasons, birth of a child, a wedding and festivals. The dances are extremely simple with minimum of steps or movement. The dances burst with verve and vitality. Men and women perform some dances exclusively, while in some perfomances men and women dance together. On most occasions, the dancers sing themselves, while being accompanied by artists on the instruments. Each form of dance has a specific costume. Most costumes are flamboyant with extensive jewels.
The northeast part of the country is the home for over 60 tribes. Each tribe has its own range of tribal dances. The exciting dances of the Nagas and the Bihus of Assam, are performed to celebrate spring and harvesting.
The chief folk dance of Gujarat, the Dandiya , is performed using sticks. Each performer holds two sticks, which they strike alternately to the right and left while the group dances. They also move diagonally, clockwise, anti-clockwise, as they strike the sticks.
The Bhangra dance of Punjab is danced by men, to the rhythm of the drum. The dance includes a wide range of leaps and jumps. Dancers stand on each other's shoulder while dancing to the music.

Dances of India
The origin of classical dance in India goes back to 2BC when the ancient treatise on dance, Natya Shastra, was compiled. Dance in India is guided by the elaborate codes in the Natya Shastra and by mythology, legend and classical literature. Classical dance forms have rigid rules for presentation. Among the leading forms of classical dance are Bharata Natyam, Kathakali, Kathak, Manipuri, Odissi, Kuchipudi and Mohini Attam. Bharata Natyam , originating in Tamil Nadu, has movements of pure rhythm, rendering a story dramatically in different moods. For a long time, Bharata Natyam was performed only in temples by dancers in service of the temple, the devadasis. The dancers must learn the language of gestures, mudras - so as to express feelings, movements and characters in the stories which she narrates through dance. Kathakali (pictured here), the dance drama from Kerala, requires the artist to wear elaborate make-up. The colors on the face are symbolic of the characters the dancer is depicting. The stories for attakathas (the verse text for a kathakali piece) are selected from epics and mythologies and are written in a highly sanskritised verse form in Malayalam. The actor does not speak, but expresses himself through highly complicated and scientifically ordained mudras and steps, closely following the text being sung from offstage. The principal classical dance of north India

Events at the Indian Pueblos in New Mexico USA
Feast days, dances and more As you travel between Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos, you pass several Indian pueblos or villages. Throughout the year there are feast days, dances and other public events to which visitors are always welcome. But it is important for non-Indians to realize that the dances are not only social, but religious events to be observed with respect. When visiting a pueblo, remember you are a guest on private land and it is necessary to obey Indian rules and laws: Do not talk during the dances; do not applaud Do not walk across the dance plaza Refrain from talking to dancers until they finish Do not enter kivas or areas marked as restricted Do not take alcoholic beverages to the pueblo Do not take pictures Obey all parking and speed limit signs Do not pick up pottery shards or other tempting artifacts When visiting a pueblo on a regular (not a feast) day, check with tribal officials before taking your camera out of your car. Some pueblos have rules against photography. Most, however, require that you buy a photo permit first. Also, check for information on sketching or videotaping. As many of the traditional planting and harvest dances follow the whims of the seasons, the dates scheduled for dances may change. It is a good idea to call the governor's office (numbers below) of the pueblo you intend to visit to make sure dances will be performed as listed here.
