Ancient India's Contribution to-THE FINE ARTS "If I am asked which nation had been advanced in the ancient world in respect of education and culture then I would say it was - India." - Max Muller
German Indologist
In the area of the fine arts too the Indian psyche has proved itself to be quite fertile. An Indian is generally familiar with the different classical dance styles that today exist in India, like Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Manipuri, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohini Attam apart from the folk dance like Bhangra and Garba.
In the area of music too we have many indigenously Indian muscial instruments like Sarangi, Sitar, Tabla, Tambora, Tanpura, etc., Two schools of vocal music also have evolved in India viz. the Hindustani School and Carnatic School. Exponents of Indian vocal music and dance like Bhimsen Joshi Subbalakshmi, Yamini Krishnamurthy, Sanjukta Panigrahi, etc. have become popular with foreign audiences. The series of 'Festivals of India' that were organised in Britain, U.S.A., France, the former U.S.S.R. and Japan, did much to inform the peoples of these countries about Indian culture. But a large part of ancient India's achievements in the fine arts remain unknown to Indians.
In this chapter we will exam the scenario in these areas in ancient In and how the native cultures of the countries of South-east Asia as well as of Cent Asia, the Mid East and also Europe h borrowed from India in the area of the Fine Arts.

YOUR WORKOUT: Indian dance routine falls short
May 18, 2004 BY HOLLY HANSON
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST A novel approach to fitness is always welcome, and Bloomfield Hills resident Veera Mahajan provides one in "Bhangra Aerobics," her new fitness DVD. 'BHANGRA AEROBICS' Cost: $14.99 (DVD) To order: Call Ranal Productions at 800-292-8287, access code 88, or go to www.ranal.net Types of moves: Indian folkdance steps and toning exercises. Fitness level: Intermediate. Equipment: Flexible fitness or dance shoes, exercise mat. Risky moves: The high-impact jumps and kicks can be hard on the knees; the leg lifts can be risky for people with back problems. Tip: Pace yourself. The moves can be quite strenuous. Based on a popular style of Northern Indian folk dance, "Bhangra Aerobics" offers a 39-minute program that blends energetic dance steps and floor exercise for toning. Mahajan, a business owner and mother of two, deserves an A for her concept, blending Northern Indian folkdancing with rousing Punjabi music (think of the wedding scenes in "Bend It Like Beckham"). It begins with a 5-minute warmup, proceeds to a 17-minute aerobics segment, continues with 12 minutes of floor exercise and ends with about 5 minutes of stretching. Using the DVD's menu screen, you can choose which segments to perform each time you work out. But the execution of the routine the depth of the instruction, the attention to form, even the placement of the cameras rarely rises above the amateurish. Mahajan is in great shape and clearly has taken a lot of exercise classes, but those qualities do not make her a great fitness leader. Mahajan never explains her fitness experience or qualifications, nor is there any obvious input from a trained fitness expert.

PLAINS INDIAN CULTURE
The Plains Indians lived in the area of our country known as the Great Plains. This culture group of Indians is well-known for the importance of the buffalo, their religious ceremonies, the use of the tepee, and their war-path customs. Four important tribes in this culture include the Dakota, Cheyenne, Sioux, and Comanche.
The buffalo was the most important natural resource of the Plains Indians. The Plains Indians were hunters. They hunted many kinds of animals, but it was the buffalo which provided them with all of their basic needs food, clothing, and shelter. The Plains Indian Culture followed the buffalo migration -or movement of the buffalo. Because of the constant moving of the tribe, they needed a form of shelter that could be quickly and easily put together and taken down. They called this type of home the tepee. The tepee was made by leaning long poles together and covering them with buffalo hide. The long poles of the tepee were dragged behind the horse and used to carry the belongings of the Indians when they moved their village. This was called a travois. Once the buffalo herd was spotted by the Indian scouts, it was the job of the women to set up the tepees while the warriors began the hunt.

by IRA KENNEDY American Indian Prophecies is not about the end of the world but, rather, a change of worldsthe beginning of a new Earth cycle. The prophecies of Black Elk, Wovoka, Rolling Thunder, Lame Deer, Sun Bear, and the Hopi are used to examine the differences between Western and Native American world views and their relationship to the future. INTRODUCTION T here is a remarkable difference between Western prophecies and those of native peoples. When Western prophets see into the future they envision Armageddon. The end of the world. When native prophets look down that same path they see the completion of a great cycle. A change of worlds. The reason for these vastly different views is found in the way time is experienced. In the West time is history. There is a past, a present, and a future; a beginning, a middle, and an end. Like a stick. Native peoples experience time as a cycle. There are four stages, such as the seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Like a hoop. Each stage is a preparation for the next. At the center of the hoop is a still timelessness; the eternal present around which the cycles revolve. The visions of native prophets occur at that center point from where the cycles of change can be seen. There is no end. For the Indians of North America, the last quarter of the 1800s was the winter of their culture. All that they had known had fallen away, like leaves on a tree. In 1863, among the sacred hills of South Dakota, was born a
