Students learn Indian dance
By Mark Boshnack
Tri-Towns Bureau
During an afternoon assembly, students showed what they learned midway through a week-long program about the arts of northern India.
At the same time, they celebrated raising more than $1,500 for their sister city program with Dundlod, a town in northern India, and they were rewarded with teachers kissing a goat.
Students worked with dancer and choreographer Satya Narayan Charka, a teacher of northern Indian classical Kathak dance, to learn the dance movements during his three days at Riverside, said third-grade Advertisement
Charka said this is the first time he worked with students so young. He usually teaches professionals, he said. Since 1981, he has been the director of a dance school in Monroe, according to his website.
But Charka said he enjoyed the challenge. Initially students had trouble coordinating the movements of head and body, but within a few days, "they had picked it up," he said.
It was a challenge not only to learn the steps and hand movements but also because "they had to do a lot of focusing," Charka said. Like all Indian dances, these taught lessons about knowledge and wisdom, he said.

Art is collaboration between God and Man, raising him to the exclusive band of creators and taking him deeply within and around his hard work. It is a unique result of a unique temperament with its beauty derived from mutable disconcert of his environment. When early man stenciled an impression of the dark of wall of the cave, he was deliberately, vision and creation.

HOME ARCHITECTURE SCULPTURE PAINTINGS ... LITERATURE DANCE In dance, India has one of the largest repertoires in the world. There are eight main classical forms: Bharata Natyam (Tamilnadu), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Odissi (Orissa), Kathak (Bihar), Manipuri (Assam and Manipur) Mohini attam, Kathakali (Kerala) and Yakshaganam (Karnataka). There are four minor classical forms, Chakiarkoothu, Konishattam, Kudiyattam and Ottamthullal ,all originating in Kerala. Distinct styles of folk dances are provided by a staggering multiplicity of races, linguistic and ethnic groups and religious and social organizations. They have an unharnessed progressive growth because they are representative of the regional cultures. Folk art is identified with the common man's life, distinct from the classical form, which is clearly for the elite. Indian folk dance is simple, yet it is not naïve. Rhythm and tune- simple and often repetitive, combined with minimum use of words, and with the least number of complex musical instruments are the underscore of the folk dances of India. Indian dance scene can be categorised as:
  • Tribal dances Religious dances and Classical dances
Tribal dances The important traditional "Brato " of Bengal

Individuality Jagoji ... Dances of India Indian Classical Dance Has Lost Spiritual Purpose
There is much to say about the Indian classical dances about its lucidity, expression, etc. Yet many and most of our dancers forget why they are dancing and for what purpose they are dancing. The competition for performing, the glamour, commercialism, image, fame and all that nonsense has cropped into the dances since fifty years back when it was first brought from the temple. A dance like ours containing divine and Godly verses does not need people like critics to judge a dancer. Any dancer, whether they are veterans or superstars or a learner should be treated with equal respect as an expression of divine. Many dancers cling frantically to an organization and the organizers in order to get performance opportunities. In return they are expect to promote these organizations and bring up the organization's image in the name of dance; thereby contributing to politics, rivalry between

Ghost Dance
The principal ceremonial rite of a peculiar Indian religion with originated about 1887 with Wovoka, alias jack Wilson, an Indian of the Piute tribe in Nevada. He claimed to have obtained his revelation in a vision in which he had been taken into the spirit world and talked with God , Who had promised a speedy return to the old Indian life through the reincarnation of all the dead Indians, the buffalo and other game, upon a new earth, which was already advancing from the west and would push before it the alien whites to their own proper country beyond the ocean, while the Indian believers would be taken up, as by wings, upon the new surface, and there reunited with their old-time friends. By performance of the prescribed dance and songs the consumation would be hastened, while in the frequent hypnotic trances brought about by the efforts of the priests the more sensitive subjects were enabled to anticipate the event in visions. The belief spread among nearly all of the tribes eastward of the Missouri, and produced much excitement for several years, until several dates of the great change had passed without realization of the prophecy, when the ferment gradually subsided. In Dakota it lead indirectly to an outbreak among the

A dancing girl figurine was found in the ruins of Mohenjodaro and is dated approximately 2nd Century B.C. Many group dancing sequences are depicted in exquisite rock paintings of Bhimabetaka caves of Madhya Pradesh. The Apsaras (Celestials) dancers are carved at the gateways of Sanchi. The wall paintings of Ajanta and Ellora, the sculptures of Khajuraho, the temple walls of Hoysala dynasty, stand ample evidence for popularity of Indian dances from ancient times. Through the centuries the dances have been used as a vehicle of worship and expression of emotions in India. The temple dancers (Devadasis) have led a very austere lives in order to perform sacred dances to please Gods and Goddesses. The Devadasi system is still prevalent in some states of India. In Karnataka they are dedicated to the Goddess Yellamma of Savadatti. In Orissa , they are appointed to perform various activities of the temple.
