East Indian Dance - Bharata Natyam

(also see classes and workshops)
Bharata Natyam is a classical East Indian dance form that has its roots in the dance that used to be performed by the temple dancers of southern India.
In early medieval times the tradition of temple dancers called devadasis started to be widespread. These dancers were women that were dedicated to a temple. They were not married but were ritually married to the God in the temple.
The work of the devadasis was to dance in front of the deity and also at festivals in and around the temple. They were well provided for by the temple, with housing and salary.
Unfortunately this system declined and the dancers ended up facing a lot of hardship until they were banned from the temples in our century. But thanks to the hard work of a few outstanding dancers, today the dance has been revived and is now very popular again. Today it is a stage art but it has kept the traditions from the temples with the same technique and repertoire.
In this dance form there is one part that is purely technical, where the feet are used to stamp different intricate rhythms while the hands and eyes do ornamental movements. The other part of the dance is where the hands and facial expression together with the body movement are used to portray stories from the Hindu mythology.

http://www.ghungaroo.com/gypsydance.html
GYPSY DANCE (Banjara Style) As a people, Gypsies are non-conformists and rebels of conventionalism. Foreigners wherever they go and the target of persecution for hundreds of years. This negative has, on the other hand, created a strength of character and togetherness few can compare. The full spectrum of human emotions is expressed daily in the dramatic life of Gypsies. Gypsies migrated from India about the 10th century a.d. throughout the world for reasons, I would assume, being able to maintain their independence from governments and cultures who dictate their destiny. Freedom from tyranny is the essence of the Gypsy soul. The soul of Gypsies touches us all. We all have one living within us- a fantasy awaiting expression. In non-Gypsy cultures, this fantasy is open to interpretation. The name "Gypsy" is widely used to express the wildest and most perverse feelings. It is probably the most misused term in western cultures. "Gypsy" has become a metaphor for humanity's struggle for expression of passion; but there's a large cultural gap between gypsy and non-gypsies. The root of Gypsy culture is India ; and in almost every country where Gypsies live, the morals and traditions can be traced to India where interpretations of personal freedoms are different. The characterization of "free as a gypsy" in western terms, is expressed through nudity, sexuality, etc.reflecting their personal interpretations. This does not exist in the Banjara Gypsy dance form. On the other hand, these emotions are communicated by an intricate body language, facial expressions and hand gestures. It's a dance which transcends nudity and vanity. It reflects the inner most passions of the soul.

I ndian Classical Dances ƒCƒ“ƒhŒ“T•‘—x The classical tradition is an ancient and sophisticated art form stretching back over thousands of years. Originating in the temples and performed by the devadasis, the classical styles have been associated with mythology, philosophy, and spiritual beliefs of the Hindu culture and, in more recent times, the Islamic tradition.Classical dance has its roots in the Natya Shastra, the earliest known written text on dramaturgy. Attributed to the Sage Bharata in the second century, this Sanskrit treatise defines drama, comprising speech, mime, dance, and music, and lays down the principles governing technique and aesthetics.

Kathakali
Kathakali developed in Kerala in southwest India. This vigorous, dramatic and demanding style owes much to the martial arts tradition. It uses highly stylized mime, makeup, and costume to depict the characters from Hindu myths and legends.Mohini Attam also comes from Kerala.

Dance of the Dead
Native American Indian Lore
Once a year the People of Kamak left their village and went up Palomar Mountain to gather acorns. Everyone went, young and old, and even the ill were carried along on litters so that the village could stay together at this important time. The house were left empty, no one was afraid to thieves in those days. While the village was deserted, a man from anther nearby village called Ahoya came to Kamak. He found everyone gone. He knew where they had gone, and why, so he knew he could not see his friends this trip. He decided to spend the night and go on his way the next morning. He did not go into anyone's house, but rather he took a large basket normally used to store grain and turned it over. He crawled under the basket, where the wind could not bother him. He fell asleep. In the early evening, but long after dark, he was awakened by someone calling People out to dance. At first he thought the People of Kamak had come back from acorn gathering. Then, being a old man, he began to recognize the voices of People he had known many years ago, but who were now long dead He began to realize that the voices were spirits of the Dead! While the People of Kamak were away, the Dead had returned to dance. The old man lay quietly under the basket, listening to the voices of all the People, all the way back to the ancient days. He heard the Woman-who-was-turned-into-rock as she sang, He heard the Man-who-scooped-rock-with-his-hand as he sang. All the People of the ancient days were here n the village again.

I Articles I Classifieds ... Indian Cinema I Online Chat I E-Cards I Mohiniattam - The dance of the enchantress. An article by Sunanda Nair. Sunanda Nair, a very fine exponent of Mohiniattam now lives and teaches in the United States. Click here to reach Sunanda's Home Page at www.artindia.net This Indian classical dance form - Mohiniattam - comes from one of the South states of India, Kerala. And the mere mention of Kerala brings up in one’s mind the wondrous and incomparable beauty of its landscape .The scenic backwaters where the palm fronds fill up the Kerala skyline moving gently and gracefully in the breeze, the boats bobbing up and down gently, gracefully and in perfect tune with nature and its rhythm . A Mohini Attam dancer immediately reminds you of this scenic beauty in her dance. The movements are beautiful and lyrical and they are always in an unbroken chain, from one movement very gently and gracefully merging into another . Though the movements are swaying and gentle the presentation comes out with a tremendous and strong impact leaving the spectator in an atmosphere of grace, charm, vitality and a forceful vivacity. The graceful and long limbs of a Mohini Attam dancer brings before your eyes the vision of the palm fronds swaying and dancing in the breeze and the movements are like those of a boat bobbing up and down in the back waters. There is a tremendous amount of force that a Mohini Attam dancer brings out in her performance without which the performance would be lacking in its lustre but this tremendous energy is released in a very controlled and graceful manner which can be achieved only with discipline , hard work and (bhakti) or devotion to the art form.
