21. Dance1
The indian dance forms are based on the instructions in the Natyasastra. Most indian dances take their themes from India s rich mythology and folk legends.
http://www.umich.edu/~hindu/dance/dance1.htm
India offers a number of classical dance forms, each of which can be traced to different parts of the country. Each form represents the culture and ethos of a particular region or a group of people. The most popular classical styles seen on the Indian stage are Bharatanatyam of Tamil Nadu, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam of Kerala, Odissi of Orissa, Kathak of Uttar Pradesh, Kuchipudi of Andhra Pradesh and Manipuri of Manipur. Besides these, there are several semi-classical dances that contribute to the plethora of Indian dances. The common root of all classical dance forms can be traced to Natyasastra, ascribed to Sage Bharata who is believed to have lived between the 1st and 2nd Century AD. The Indian dance forms are based on the instructions in the Natyasastra. It also contains deliberations on the different kind of postures, the mudras or hand formations and their meanings, the kind of emotions and their categorisation, not to mention the kind of attire, the stage, the ornaments and even the audience. All dance forms are thus structured around the nine rasas

22. Indian Classical Dance Presents Parul Shah
Kathakdance.com presents Parul Shah, a growing Kathak performer, aswell-as an educator of Kathak, providing performances for events and classes to aspiring dancers and learners.
http://www.kathakdance.com/kat-p.html
Parul Shah , a dance educator, choreographer and performer has been pursuing the North Indian Classical dance, Kathak for the past 18 years. Her aspiration as a performer is to imbibe the sensibilities of traditional Kathak with the thoughts and experiences of today. She believes that the age-old forms must keep intact their sense of aesthetics but must also live and breathe newness. In her performances, Parul Shah displays both the traditional repertoire as well presenting Kathak through a contemporary treatment. Her initial training began with Shri Satya Narayan Charka at the East-West School of Dance in the United States.
To further her dance career, Parul studied at the Kadamb Institute for music and dance in Ahmedabad, India under the tutelage of Padmashree Kumudini Lakhia and Shrimati Sandhya Desai for the past ten years. Parul's work and style of teaching has been most influenced by her own training with Padmashree Kumudini Lakhia where questioning and thinking about dance on ones own terms is highly encouraged. Parul has received her MA in dance from Columbia University and focused her studies on the issues of traditionalism, modernism and the aspirations of the individual as a creative and responsive being.

This gave me the opportunity to see them in 'action' both on and off the stage. I can tell you they really have a passion for what they do and invest countless hours and preparation into each dance routine. In many ways their rehearsals were likened to a family gathering as they are very fond of each other. I thank them for allowing me to be part of their 'world'. This page is dedicated to them and their art form. Below is Michael's brother, Shammi's E-mail. You may use this to contact them. If you ask nice he may pass on the message. Guru Prakash Yadagudde
This is a picture of Guru Shri Prakash Yadagudde. He won 2 scholarships from his native Bangalore, to train further in New Delhi and Madras under U.S. Krishna Rao. He has also trained with Chitra Visweswaran. He has taught over 20 students to Arangetram level and has been teaching in Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan for approx. 15 years. I have had the honour of seeing him dance twice. He is, without a doubt, my favourite dancer.

Without the knowledge of dance the knowledge
of sculptural art cannot be known
This is a well known line from the Vishnudharmottara Purana, a Sanskrit text which describes techniques of painting and sculpture. So why would a book on sculpture have a line which gives so much merit to dance. This is because Indian dance and sculpture have shared a common vocabulary through out history. The idea is best illustrated through examples and what better example than the famous icon of Nataraja. Nataraja - translated either as the 'dancing king' or the 'king of dancers', is the deity Shiva represented as a dancing icon. This image was a contribution of philosophers and sculptors in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Let me begin with the myth of the Nataraja image. Once upon a time in the Daruka forest a group of very enlightened sages lived with their wives. Over a period of time they became very arrogant and were filled with pride about their powers. They became so arrogant that they considered themselves more powerful than the gods and everyone else in the Universe. In many texts on dance Shiva is considered as the one who taught the art of dance to mankind. To this day the figure of Nataraja is held in high regard by all classical Indian dancers. This image has been used countless times all over the world to represent Indian culture. What is this image? Does it have any meaning besides being a beautiful depiction of movement? Let us look at the philosophical significance of this image.
