Quote of the Minute...
When a man you like switches from what he said a year ago, or four years ago, he is a broad-minded man who has courage enough to change his mind with changing conditions. When a man you don't like does it, he is a liar who has broken his promises. Franklin Adams

Ottoman Traders portray an Ottoman Turkish Trading Caravan of the mid1500's. The web site for this Renaissance performance guild offers historical information about mid-eastern music and dance.
http://www.ottoman-traders.com
Frame Escape! Site Updated on 12/14/03 The Ottoman Traders Guild portrays a Ottoman Turkish trading caravan of the mid-1500's. During the Renaissance, for our purposes 1520 - 1600, trade was happening either through walking caravans traveling from city to city or by merchant ship. Our caravan travels established trade routes starting in Constantinople and traveling "around the known world". We are primarily a Trading Caravan and represent the several different classes: merchant traders, entertainers, fighting men, slaves, and thieves, that would have joined on caravan. Several different nationalities are represented and several different languages spoken. We portray characters in any of these general categories: Merchants, Fighting Men, Entertainers, and Wayfaring Travelers. Out of respect for all faiths, we do not portray any form of religion. Video Directory
The following list describes the 75 video clips that illustrate portions of the Dance Instruction Manuals. These clips were selected from two different videotaping sessions. The first was a public event, "Society Dances and Parlor Amusements in The Great Hall," which took place at the Library of Congress on October 15, 1997. The event, which marked the 100th anniversary of the Library's Jefferson Building, featured late 19th-century dances performed in costume against the backdrop of the Great Hall, with music provided by a wind band using period instruments. The second videotaping session took place in the Library's Coolidge Auditorium on April 14, 1998. The videos from this session feature a pair of dancers demonstrating specific dances or movements from selected manuals in the collection. All time periods are represented in these videos. The Table of Contents provides a complete list of the 75 clips arranged by historical period. The entries for individual video clips provide links to the clips themselves and also to the particular pages in the manuals where that dance is discussed. Table of Contents: Renaissance

Historical Square Dance Exhibitions For best viewing use 800X600 High Color We Americans have a unique contribution to make to the world-wide cultural scene. However, the majority of our citizens are unaware of the richness of the art forms which have originated here and are unique to our land. The California Heritage Dancers are dedicated to preserving through exhibitions, the rich heritage of what has become known as American Square Dancing. In order not to lose these old time dances, the California Heritage Dancers was organized in 1986 recruiting members from various square dance clubs in Southern California. Extensive research has resulted in a large repertoire of varied dances from the 1700's to 1996. The dancers have created authentic costuming and music to complete the picture. A video tape is available that will take you on "A Journey Through America's Folk Dance" highlighting some of the Heritage Dancer's routines and provides a unique look at the roots of modern square dancing. For more information just e-mail.

39. Mythological Origins And Developent Of Indian Music (Sangeet)
Describes the traditional Hindu origins of Indian music and dance including a historical account of its development.
http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/myth_origin.html
MYTHOLOGICAL ORIGINS OF SANGEET
by David Courtney, Ph.D. We must look at mythology to really see the significance that Indian music sangeet has to Indian society. This is easily illustrated in the story concerning its origin. Perhaps the clearest mythological raison de etre Natya-Shastra (Rangacharya 1966) Once, a long time ago, during the transitional period between two Ages it so happened that people took to uncivilised ways, were ruled by lust and greed, behaved in angry and jealous ways with each other and not only gods but demons, evil spirits, yakshas and and such like others swarmed over the earth. Seeing this plight, Indra and other gods approached god Brahma and requested him to give the people a toy (Kridaniyaka), but one which could not only be seen but heard and this should turn out a diversion (so that people gave up their bad ways) Although it was decided to give the celestial art of sangeet to mankind, a suitable human had to be found who was capable of receiving this gift. Sangeet had always been in the realm of the demigods ( gandharva . A super-human of superior spiritual ability was required to convey this celestial artform to the world of man. It fell upon the great sage Narada to be the first mortal recipient of this divine art. Through Narada, we are indebted for the presence of classical music.
