Greece's Culture
The Birth of Ancient Society

The history of ancient Greece is one of the oldest fields of academic research in history.
With the revival of interest in the study of the Greek language and Greek literature in Italy during the 15th century, the literary remains of Greek civilization from Homer to early
Christianity were voraciously re-examined by scholars of the time.
Archaeology later revealed civilizations covered in mythology, and forced a reevaluation of every surviving text from the ancient world. However, in the 18th and 19th centuries, the skeptics began questioning the validity of scholarly Greek literature, giving rise to archeological expeditions at Troy in 1870. Greek Music and Dance Music and dancing has always been important to the Greek people. Many traditions are preserved in the Greece villages, especially in the more isolated ones. In ancient times, dance, song, and music were all integral parts of the theater. In fact, the Greek word 'XOPOC', (HOROS), referred to both dance and song. The English words chorus, chorale, choir, and choreography all come from this same Greek word. Furthermore, there are numerous references to dancing in ancient literature. Besides several references in various sources from the ancient and Byzantine world, there are drawings, paintings, and small statues which depict dancers and musicians. Invariably, the dancers are in a circle or line, often with a musician or musicians in the center.

Brandy Williams Papers. greek RITUAL dance. Hunt, Yvonne Traditional dance in greekCulture, Centre for Asia Minor Studies Music Folklore Archive, Athens 1996.
http://www.speakeasy.net/~bwilliam/greekdance.html
GREEK RITUAL DANCE Ancient Pagans dance across Classical vases holding graceful folds of robes in their hands, frozen by the artist in a moment of bending and leaping and twirling. How inspiring they are! Many a modern looks to the vases and says, "I will reconstruct these dances!" The most famous of these, of course, was Isadora Duncan, whose simple dances in homemade togas entranced Europe in her lifetime. Modern Pagans long to recover the ancient Pagan functions of the dance. Greeks, of course, never ceased to dance, even while converting to Christianity. Some of the ancient meanings of the dance remain-certain dances are performed during the spring with clear fertility symbology. The social implications have changed little. Dance provides a meeting place for men and women, an emotional expression of community spirit, a form of cultural bonding that identifies this person as a member of this village, this country. But modern Greeks no longer dance in honor of the Gods and Goddesses, and modern Pagans long to do so. How might we go about this? In one sense, reconstruction is impossible. Ultimately, lacking actual videotape of eighth-century dances, it's impossible to say with certainty that we are performing an eighth century dance.

The material to be presented at the upcoming festival will offer a unique perspective on traditions and customs of the Easter period from various regions of Greece. There is an abundance of folk dances, songs and traditions prior to, during and after the Easter period. The Orpheus Dance Troupe, with the help of the visiting artists, hopes to bring these traditions to life during this event. The Orpheus Dance Troupe has been preparing for this event for some time and members have been able to research and practice a wide range of material from various areas in Greece. One example is the traditions and songs of the Easter “Lazarines”, women primarily from the northern regions of Greece who sing and dance characteristic folk tunes during the Saturday of Lazaros as well as the next day, Palm Sunday.

Greek DICTIONARIES (software) Greek Architects in Jerusalem The Cultural Center of the Greek community built in 1902 in the heart of the Greek Colony in the new city of Jerusalem History of the Greek Community Since the time of Alexander the Great, Greeks have been living in Jerusalem. From ancient times until the present day, the size of the Greek Community has fluctuated from period to period, and from one political era to another. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Greek Community of Jerusalem had reached a peak. The strengthening of the Greek Patriarchate in the Holy Land, and emigration from the mountains of Turkey in population exchanges, were contributing factors. During those years the Greek Community numbered over 7,000, and their contribution to the city of Jerusalem was great. The Greeks of Jerusalem used to live adjacent to the monasteries owned by the Greek Patriarchate. At the end of the last century, a monk named Ephthimious bought 1,000 dunams in the Katamon area of Jerusalem. That land was slated for the establishment of the Greek Colony. The initial founders of this Greek Community implemented the idea. Many of the original buildings still stand today.

Greek Traditions in Music and Dance
By Athan Karras
The tradition of music in Greece goes back thousands of years. It is part of a national heritage treasured by the Greek people like a precious heirloom from ancient Greece, since this divine gift was entrusted to them by Apollo and the patron Muse, Terpsichore, presided over their dances. To this very day, music is an inseparable part of Greek life. In his dances and songs, the Greek gives vent to his dramatic expression to glorify his joys, to wallow in his sorrows, and above all, to record his inspirations, the history, and the lore of his people, and to store up legends and folktales. Greek folk music is a superb combination of elements of ancient Greek music, a theoretical basis of scales and rhythm forms, some oriental influence, perhaps as a result of the expeditions of Alexander the Great, fused together under some mannered conditions from Byzantine life and the post-Byzantium ages. It is definitely, with very few exceptions, entirely free of any of the characteristics found in Western music. This exception can be traced particularly to the Ionian Islands between Italy and Greece, and mostly due to the influence of the Venetian reign, which successively assimilated into the lifestream of European thought and art. The Ionian Islands remained under Venetian rule and influence until very late in the 19th Century.

Traditional Greek Dance
The performing arts are tools that a community can use to build pride in a cultural heritage. The Greek Orthodox Church in Salt Lake City supports three levels of folkdance performing groups, the Junior and Senior Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA), and the college-age Dionysius Dancers. These groups teach Greek customs and traditions to the youth who act as cultural ambassadors for the local community when they perform at festivals and celebrations. There are also several groups of musicians who play for Greek social and folk dancing in Utah.
