Dance Dancer with krotala , flute case, and walking stick, Attic red figure kylix, ca. 480 BC
I have found a very interesting and funny description by J. B. Calvert of a story by Herodotus of Cleisthenes, a tyrant of Sicyon in 575 BC, who wanted his daughter Agarista to marry. A large party started with many young rich men from prominent Athenian families who wanted to be considered to marry Agarista. Hippocleides, one of these young men, showed off his talents, which included dancing to the flute. He danced on a table, which was rather showy anyway, but he was finally so indelicate as to dance with his head on the table and his legs gyrating in the air. Cleisthenes rejected Hippocleides to marry his daughter, with the comment that he had "danced" away his bride. Hippocleides replied with " What do I care ?" Now underwear were not used commonly by ancient Greeks and we can imagine that even if nudity was not uncommon in ancient Greece the performance of Hippocleides must be shocking. ( Feast of funnies from the ancients
Dance is mentioned in the Homeric poems: the suitors of Penelope delight themselves with music and dancing. Odysseus is entertained at the court of Alcinous with the exhibitions of very skillful dancers.

The dance tradition of Greece was disseminated to Europe where it became accentuated with elements of theatre and ballet. The Greek dance is combined with unique forms of cultural expression, music and poetry, each claiming its unique identity and significance in the ensemble of an integrated dance performance. The style of Greek dance is reminiscent of the rules of European dance (in terms of steps and dance tempi). However the morphic characteristics of the Greek dance are presented in a kaleidoscope of expression. The expressive efficiency and plasticity of the human body are dominant, particularly in the movements of the upper body. The torso, hands and wrist are instrumental in the reenactment of dramatic, tragic and lyric motifs. The face mirrors emotions that are in tune with music and rhythm. Ancient Greece drove a sharp distinction between the Apollonian dance and the Dionysiac dance. The former – the

Introduction Greece is one of the few countries in the world where the folk dances are as alive today as they were in ancient times. Dance has always played an important role in the life of a Greek. It is an expression of human feelings and everyday life. The Greeks danced at religious festivals, ceremonies; they danced to ensure fertility; they danced to prepare for war and to celebrate victories; they danced at weddings; they danced to overcome depression and to cure physical illness. Almost every dance has a story to tell. Dance was regarded as one of the highest forms of art. Plato agreed with his mentor Socrates that every educated man should know how to dance gracefully by which he meant the manly exercises that kept the body strong and supple and ready to do its duty on the battlefield. The Pyrrhic, or weapon dance (a form of mock combat) taken from Crete and perfected in Sparta, was the ideal. The dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul. Dancing is divine in its nature and is the gift of the gods. Plato

Greek Culture ~ Food
The Greek culture began before the Roman. The Iliad , one of the earliest of the great written Greek works, appeared roughly 700 years before the Aeneid , an early Roman work. The Iliad in turn was based on a good 300 years of verbal story telling. Greek civilization was mostly conducted from small city states. The Greeks loved life and lived it with zest. They had little interest in the afterlife which, even for the greatest of men, was believed to be an eternal unpleasantness. In the Odyssey , the dead Achilles says that he would rather be a slave in life than king of the dead. The best that a man could hope to do would be to perform great deeds that would be remembered after his death. Because they highly regarded intellectuals (poets, philosophers and others) in addition to their great warriors, great deeds could be accomplished by all. The Greeks believed in individualism and prized differences in personality and character. They were fascinated by the contradiction that it is those very virtues that made a man great which can lead to his undoing. This is very subtle thinking. Their myths and religion reflect these traits. Their gods were personalized with individual strengths and flaws; gods made mistakes, got embarrassed and were caught cheating on their spouses. But, also there were gods who were heroic, wise, loving, and developed essential crafts like weaving.

What about using Turkish music?
This can be tricky...it's possible to offend someone.
Response 1
"First of all, don't think because the Greeks and Turks seem to always be at odds politically, that they find each others' music offensive. I've found, and please, this is only my observation, that Greeks and Turks have cross-polinated so much that they either claim or simply just like the same music. "For example, there is a new, nice CD out now called "Greatest Turkish Belly Dance Hits", or something similar wich I think will be easy for you to find. If has a picture of a very thin dancer in a pink costume with a scarf on her head... Here's the sticky pointthis CD has a number of songs on it that I've heard played by Greek bands for Greek line dancing. A lot of great Turkish music comes from the city of Izmir, which, until about 1923, was largely inhabited by Greeks, who called the city Smyrna. When the Turks expelled their ethnic Greeks in 1923 (and the Greeks expelled their ethnic Turks at the same time), these Greeks took their music with them. The Greeks from Smyrna moved to Athens and Piraeus, where they developed an incredible honky-tonk type of music called Rembetika. (There are a number of Rembetika CDs that are available in chain music stores, but I'd hesitate to use them in a belly dance routine.)

    Ethnic Costumes
A kilt like costume was worn mainly in the central and southern regions of Greece. The costume derives its name from the pleated white skirt (foustanela) made of many triangular shaped pieces of cloth sewn together diagonally. The foustanela was worn by the Greek fighters of the 1821 revolution and today it serves as the official uniform of the Evzones, Greece’s Presidential Guard, who can be seen guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens. The foustanela skirt consists of 400 pleats symbolizing the years during which Greece was under Ottoman rule. The remainder of the costume is composed of a white shirt with very wide flowing sleeves, an embroidered woolen vest, a sash worn around the waist, and shoes (tsarouhia) with large pompons.
The costume called Foustanela, established by Otto, the first King of Greece, as the formal courtdress in the middle of the 19th century, prevailed in the urban centers of Moreas (Peloponnese)and Roumeli (Central Greece). This dress was originally the military outfit of the Greek chieftains. The costume was soon modified by the men for holidays and other festive occasions. The outfitthat is shown here has two jackets, the inner waist coat, the yileki, and a second sleeved shortjacket, the fenneli, with the sleeves falling freely over the back. The material that was used for this version. is wool. The embroidery is made of spun wool andthe belt is of a fine leather work. The Foustanela has changed in the meaning of detailed work, the length of the fousta, and, sometimes, the number of jackets worn. The sleeves have become decorative, resembling wingswithout the function of sleeves. After all the changes, it has become the standard Pan-Hellenicmale costume used to the modern times.

The Foustanela costume was established by King Otto , the first modern Greek King. King Otto was actually a Bavarian. The Foustanela was created as the formal court dress in the middle of the 19th century. King Otto was drspatched back to Bavaria, but the Foustanela prevailed in the urban centers of Moreas (Peloponnese) and Roumeli (Central Greece).
